Review
"In this integration of biography, history and geography, Paul Wright applies his considerable knowledge of the land to the life and times of people in both the Old and New Testaments. In his capable hands readers will see the characters of the Bible come to life in the context of the very real world in which they lived. Whether readers have been through the Bible fifty times or this is their first, the pictures, maps and extremely readable text will lead them to fresh insight into this greatest of stories." --Dr. John Walton, Professor of Old Testament, Wheaton CollegeThe Rose Then and Now Bible Map Atlas by Dr. Paul H. Wright is a tremendous new resource for students, pastors, and biblical scholars. As noted in the title, the atlas contains a well-known but under-appreciated feature, the integration of a clear modern- day overlay for the main maps. As many professors can attest, geography, even modern, is far from a strong suit of many students, and the integration of the ancient and modern map is definitely needed to help orient readers to where the biblical stories took place and how that connects with today s landscape. Beyond the expected features of any atlas clear, visually compelling maps, timelines, and site photos Wright s work displays a number of key strengths that flow from the unique combination of his educational background and his years of living in the land. First, the Atlas, shows a keen awareness of significant academic issues in the study of the land and brings those to light in a user-friendly way. The cautious comparisons of ancient pastoralists to traditional Bedouin is one prime example. Second, the work with its deep academic underpinnings in the modern study of history and culture, also displays a remarkably adept handling of the theological significance of the land in general and the setting of particular stories, as well as the literary use of geographical features in the various narratives of both the Old and New Testaments. Finally, it is clear from the photos, the comments on the sites, and the depth of knowledge that Wright s acquaintance with the land comes not just from decades of reading, but from years of living, studying, and teaching in the land. The first hand experience is evident on virtually every page. This is a book that I would highly recommend for anyone looking for help understanding the role of the physical setting of the Bible, the cultural milieu across the centuries it covers, and the unique literary usage of place in the narratives of the both the Old and New Testament. Wright is to be commended for producing such a clear, nuanced, and accurate text, and Rose should be thanked for making it available to us in such an attractive and helpful format. --J. Michael Thigpen, Executive Director of the Evangelical Theological Society Thigpen, Evangelical Theological Society (ETS)This is a terrific volume for reading the Bible and its cast of characters in context. The combination of text and illustration is wonderful. Among the chapters, I was particularly taken with the treatment of Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz, and the way that Wright was able to take these minor characters and assist readers in a fuller grasp of a classic tale. (This review was of the original edition, Greatness, Grace, and Glory, which did not have the clear plastic overlays.) --Dr. J. Andrew Dearman, Professor of Old Testament, Associate Dean, Fuller Theological Seminary Dearman

About the Author
About the author: No one explains Bible geography and culture better than Dr. Paul H. Wright. He lives in Jerusalem and is the executive director of the Jerusalem University College (Institute of Holy Land Studies). Biography of author Dr. Paul H. Wright Dr. Paul H. Wright is President of Jerusalem University College (the Institute of Holy Land Studies) located on historic Mt. Zion adjacent to the old walled city of Jerusalem. He also teaches courses on the culture, history and geography of the lands of the Bible. Over the years Dr. Wright has led thousands of university students and adults on field studies throughout Israel, the Palestinian territories, Jordan, Egypt and the Sinai, many to out-of-the-way places not normally seen by students of the Bible. He is also an instructor in an advanced educational program for licensed Israeli tour guides at the Yad Ben-Zvi Institute in Jerusalem, and at Tantur, a Christian research center between Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Dr. Wright holds the BA degree in anthropology from Bethel College (now Bethel University), an MA degree in the history of ancient Israel from the Institute of Holy Land Studies, an MA degree in Old Testament from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and the M Phil and PhD degrees in Bible and Ancient Near East from Hebrew Union College. He is also an ordained minister and has, over the years, been an effective teacher in both adult and children's church ministries. He and his wife Diane have lived in Jerusalem for fifteen years, and raised their two children there. They are active members of East Jerusalem Baptist Church, a small congregation that represents an active mix of dedicated people from all over the world who live and minister in Jerusalem and the surrounding area. Dr. Wright finds his time in Jerusalem to be very fulfilling. "As a written record of God's work in the world, the Bible is a book that is quite real. It is a privilege to be able to explore the realities of the world of the Bible with so many students who are eager to learn on-site. There are clear connections between the ways that the people who lived in the lands of the Bible thought about God and organized their lives in ancient times, and how folks living in the same places respond to the Divine tug today. The longer I live in Jerusalem, the more I am learning to appreciate the consistent call of God on His people, and our responsibility to live whole lives that are characterized by shalom, the peace that only He can give." sha'alu shalom yerushalayim, yishlayu ohavyich "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, may those who love you be at ease . . ." (Psalm 122:6)

Mom and I often while the time away on long drive talking about now-and-then historical situations (how the past affects the future), and after several long conversations about the Holy Lands, she said she wanted some kind of atlas of the Holy Lands throughout history. I came across this book and was amazed on how this book isn't just an atlas. It's geography, demographics, political history, time lines, etc. Loaded with information that will open your eyes. This isn't something you would have learned at Sunday School or a parochial school (if you did go to one like I did from K-12). Includes history I know my high school would be scandalized to teach. A worthy resource book for any editor's working library.
It’s mostly text. The 120 maps it says it has are small inserts in a page of text, hard to identify detail and fuzzy if enlarged. If you want a descriptive atlas,it’s probably good. I was looking for good maps. An expensive error.
This book is incredibly organized in its content. Organized from old testament to new testament telling the stories that took place Scripturally and showing the land by VERY colorful maps with overlays as to how the land was divided then and how the land is divided currently. Not just organized that way alone, but organized telling the stories from OT to NT of the people that show up in Scripture that walked those lands. This book is FULL (I mean, hundreds and hundreds) of colorful photos and maps and illustrations and pictures of archeological artifacts and places. I've only had this book for three weeks and it is turning into one of my key resources that I use for teaching. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book.
I don’t recommend the kindle version you can hardly make out the maps even when they are enlarged.
Okay, when this book arrived I nearly sent it back. Thought I'd ordered the wrong book as I expected lots of maps. Then I started reading and got totally hooked.Do NOT try to read the book. Treat it as reference or study material. It is excellent with lots of details and references to passages in the bible. So a page of reading will take you forever if you want to check every reference but it's worth the time and trouble.I'm studying the Old Testament from a historical rather than a religious point of view. Why did people go where they did; how did it develop from there; where did they go next and when - the list goes on and on. Dr. Wright starts the book with The Landed Context of the Biblical Story, covering Topography, Climate and Available resources - a real eye opener and a must for a serious student of the Old Testament. My only criticism is that I would've liked more maps with overlays of where those ancient towns are today. I realize that would've made the book too bulky and thus have ordered more maps. As it is I find myself continuously searching in another map where the town is I'm reading about. The chapter headings themselves challenge you to read : for example: Deborah and Jael - A Sweet Song of Victory; Samson - Greatness run Amuck; David and Solomon - Our Legacy; Rizpah - When Not-So-Little-things Really Matter...... And so much more.Obviously I did not return the book. And I highly recommend this for anyone that is curious about the Old Testament. However, I reiterate, it's work, not play.
The only reason I gave it four stars, instead of five, is just the feeling that it could have been even better -- but I couldn't tell you exactly how. The book is VERY GOOD; I especially like the clear plastic overlay maps that show the configuration of ancient lands TODAY.
My husband, a Pastor, received this as a gift from me for Christmas after retiring an old B&W Bible atlas. He absolutely loves it!The best part is you can take all the ancient maps from Bible times and lay a current day map over it so you get a context for where everything is in present say.I highly recommend this for a casual Bible student or a pastor who does more in-depth Bible study. It has something for every Bible student!
This is very readable and fascinating history. I love how it's set up starting with the Patriarchs and ending with New Test. characters following the history of the Bible. I've been reading this like a regular book, starting with the beginning. The maps are so helpful and the text really helps clarify what was going on in the culture at that time period, and really helped me with understanding the Scripture even more! This is one of those few rare gems of a book that I treasure and highly recommend to all students of Scripture. I love the maps and the photos! If you're looking for a good Bible atlas, I can't imagine you'd be disappointed with this one.
