I have not read a more comprehensive book on options trading. Just the overview of option strategies (Chapter 2) has more information on options than any book that I have reviewed on Amazon. Although I do not regret buying this book and reading every one of its 648 pages, it may not be right for everyone.A Bit Expensive and a Bit Outdated. You may not want to pay 79.95 for a book that was first published in 1994. In the second edition, which was published in 2004, McMillan adds a few more example trades, but the bulk of the book remains dated. For example, options are priced as fractions rather than decimals, and terms like "high" and "low" would assume new meanings when applied to more recent markets. When discussing high and low volatility (page 283), McMillan states he rarely has seen the CBOE volatility index (VIX) trading below the historical volatility of the S&P 100 (SPX). Last year the VIX traded below the SPX volatility for at least three months (May, June and August). In other words, last year's market was far more volatile than the markets upon which this book is based. Not for Beginners. Several reviewers suggest that this book might frustrate beginners to the point that they would no longer want to trade options. I found the book readable, but McMillan should not have assumed that readers understand the difference between equities and futures; particularly when most beginners do not trade futures. Also, many of his strategies for trading equity options do not work for futures (and vice versa).Impractical Advice. I was disappointed with McMillan's discussion of the Greeks (page 483) particularly Delta, Gamma and Vega. While he clearly explains how to balance a position to be Delta/Gamma neutral with limited Vega risk, he fails to reveal the practical advantages of doing so.Supposedly, a position that is Delta/Gamma neutral would be less sensitive to price movements of the underlying asset and more sensitive to changes in the asset's volatility. However, to achieve this neutrality, I had to increase the size of the position far beyond what I was willing to risk. One of McMillan's neutral positions, which also limits vega risk, comprises 555 contracts (page 505). The commission alone on such a trade would be well over $1,000.00. In his summary, McMillan concedes that these are "theoretical examples" (page 516). However, none of McMillan's real trades appear to apply this theory.Despite these problems, this book is well-worth having, and more importantly, it will make you a better trader.

Some of the negative reviews sounded like they wanted a short book that said "Do the following and you will be very rich very quick". Guess what, that book doesn't exist and will never exist. Options are very useful if used properly but to use them properly you need a deep understanding of risk and the mechanics of options. These concepts are mathematical in nature and so is this book. For a variety of reasons just buying a bunch of options is a suckers game as many have learned, but used to reduce risk as a hedge is a different matter. McMillan's other book Options as a Strategic Investment would be the place to start learning. This advanced text explains many things professionals are doing and gives insight to why the markets behave as they do. If you want to get involved with options you need to understand this book thoroughly.

I own a fair number of books on options. Some are better than others, most have a few nuggets if you dig for them. McMillan's Options as a Strategic Investment was one of my earliest purchases and I appreciated it for its academic quality. This tome is somewhat more challenging a read, is directed to individuals who want a bit more thorough analysis of option strategies and is probably more useful to very active traders who are interested in sophisticated strategies. I found it interesting and educational, but if this is your first options book, it is probably the wrong place to start. The most important single thing I learned about option trading has been that owning shares of stock is essentially the economic equivalent of simultaneously owning a long call (that is, owning a call) and being short a put (that is, having sold a put). Anyone who is about to start trading options is told that being a short put is a dangerous situation, yet it is basically inherent in owning stock due to the equivalency just described. Understand that and options become more attractive and understandable as away to invest while limiting risk and enjoying upside potential and, more importantly, why it is worth reading books such as this and those by Guy Cohen to educate yourself.

included some very good options strategies.

that's a great book.

Filled with great examples, this book brought me from practically no knowledge of options up to a point where I am now comfortable using options as another investment strategy. A great read, McMillan builds your knowledge steadily. Even if you decide you may not actually trade options, knowing the signals from the market by following options is another valuable tool for the investor.

This is not a textbook of option strategies and option trading. However, it makes for interesting and educative reading. If you want to learn the trade strategies in depth, I recommend the companion book by Lawrence McMillan "Options as a Strategic Investment".

would have given five without typos that are quite many

In Dave Hunt's book he exposes who the woman is that rides the beast in Revelation. The identity ties in directly with the metamorphosis of the early "church".He is accurate when he states that Roman Catholicism has always been what Constantine (the Great sun worshipper) blended-early Christianity and paganism. Right down to the "Queen of Heaven" who was worshipped in pagan cults before the Catholic Church called her "Mary".His investigation into the source of the RCC's vast riches was quite interesting. Some factual food for thought a reader will glean from "A Woman Rides the Beast":"Peter whom the Catholics erroneously claim was the first pope was married". Page 77. See I Cor.9:5.Catholic writers claim "Babylon" means Rome. From Karl Keating;"Babylon is a code word for Rome". Page 68.Papal violation of I Peter 5:1-3. A shepherd of the flock is not to "lord" over the flock.Mr. Hunt gives some details of the papal involvement in the Inquisitions(See "Foxe's Book of Martyrs" for more detailed coverage of the subject)as well as the pope's concordats in the WWII period. The real motivation for infant baptism/sprinkling.This book is documented and a lot of the souces for quotes are from Catholic apologists!!!One topic that has far-reaching negative effects on the Catholic Church is celibacy. This all too often means not abstaining from sex, but rather refraining from marriage. The source of the problems with RCC (and I could argue other denominations as well)is summed up by the author very well on page 184. "Christians had not used images untill Constantine became the de-facto head of the church. The door that was opened to paganism at that time has never been shut. The church attempted to accomodate the pagans joining it by retaining their idols under Christian names"."When it's tradition and the Bible conflict,Rome goes by tradition."It's all about traditions of man and the church. Page 347.I personally believe that Dave Hunt has the woman from Revelation 17 & 18 identified accurately and in more ways than one. A fascinating read and I highly recommend it.

One of the best books I've ever read on the history of the Popes and the Roman Catholic Church. It's very detailed which makes it a book you can't read without taking the time to pause and absorb all the information. I came out of the Catholic Church many years ago and didn't realize it's horrific history until recently.

Dave Hunt was the Apostle Paul of our time. He was a true man of God and faithfully spread the truth. All Christians owe it to themselves to read all of his books. This book tells the full truth about the Catholic Church - a truth that will be harder to find as time moves on. "Seek Ye the truth and the truth shall set you free."

5 stars to the writer but the history of the Catholic Church was so horrific I couldn't continuing reading the book. It seemed like fiction but he carefully footnotes his findings. If you are Catholic you won't like the book and if your not Catholic you won't like it either! It's unbelievable or almost!

Based on what I know about the Roman Empire, the New World Order and Holy Bible, this book is excellent reading and packed with truth. As far as making his point there's an overkill of information, but I like having the information because the Catholic Church has erased a lot of its history. For one thing Peter the Apostle was not a Pope, he was married, and was crucified by the Emperor of Rome like all the other Apostles including Paul. The Roman Catholic Church is an extension or replacement for the Roman Empire and has killed more Christians than the Emperor who thought he was God and wanted to be worshiped. What is the difference between him and the Pope? Peter never allowed anyone to worship him, he said worship God only just like the bible says. There is no Vicar of Christ according to the Bible, there is no mediator between God and man, 1 timothy 2:5. The Catholic Church was set up to deceive Christians, their doctrine is the opposite of the Bible, this is why they tell their people not to read it without an interpreter (deceiver). They worship idols which is clearly a sin in the Bible, they purchase and earn forgiveness of sins with money and through rituals which is not possible according to the Bible. I could go on and on but if anyone wants to know the truth they should read the Bible for themselves and obey the advice of Jesus Christ to not trust in a man, trust God only, is our eternal life really worth it? Can we afford to be wrong? Read the New Testament, read the teachings of Jesus Christ and you will know the truth, he is the truth, he is the only source of truth in this world and the Catholic Church does not want you to know this. It is a sin to bow down to an idol or image of anything and the Catholics removed the fifth commandment and they command people to bow down to the Pope and idols like the Virgin Mary. Here is the forth & fifth commandment from the Holy Bible which they do not want you to read:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; (Exodus 20,KJV)I recommend the Holy Bible to anyone searching for truth. Educate yourself, do not be deceived by this Church. Educate yourself about the Beast and the Harlot, NWO, and Satan as well, the church does not want you to know about satan or hell, but they are real and the less you know the more satan likes it! Also purgatory is made up, it's not in the bible. Which always made me wonder who they were serving anyway? They have sent more people to hell than any other Church, The Mother of Harlots, The Great Whore, they literally do serve the God of this world, Satan, and they do not want the people to know. Please educate yourself and make your decision, Jesus is coming soon, theres not much time, make him your Lord and Savior not the Pope!Ok, there was a problem with the temple and the AntiChrist. In chapter 'Unfolding Revelation' , sub-chapter called 'First and Future AntiChrist', he says: "The AntiChrist pretends to be Christ and is worshiped by the world so the people worshiping him must be Christians." I totally disagree, 1. because the Christians have been raptured already, the people who worship him are the ones who are NOT written in the book of life, he gave the right scripture but did not read the whole thing. (Rev.13:8). 2. This happens in 'Jerusalem', this is a 'Jewish Temple', no Christians. The Jews are the ones waiting for the Christ, not the Christians, we believe he has already come, it is the foundation of our belief system. God Bless.

This well researched book will provide much eye-opening information regarding the past and even present deeds of the Roman Catholic Church and how it fits into prophesy. The book was written around 1994 so doesn't provide any current information but it provides a massive amount of historical data and you will find it quite interesting regarding the lives of some of the popes who reigned over the church. The book will speak for itself.

Dave Hunt did extensive work over many years on this subject. Highly recommend it. A good read along with it is Alexander Hislop's scholarly work 'The Two Babylons". Must reads!!! Take it from an ex- Romanist.

The Poetry of Pop, by Adam Bradley

Review

"Mr. Bradley skillfully breaks down a century of standards and pop songs into their elements to reveal the interaction of craft and art in composition and performance."—Dominic Green, Wall Street Journal"Adam Bradley is unafraid to blur the boundaries . . . he can be warm and insightful. He highlights differences between modern poetry and pop music by arguing that if you showed an ancient Greek or an Elizabethan Ashberry’s poem 'by an Earthquake' alongside Taylor Swift’s 'Blank Space,' the time travellers would identify the neatly rhyming Swift as the poet."—Victoria Segal, Sunday Times"A sort of readers’ manual for pop, calmly taking the reader through the different aspects of analysing songs, and thereby appreciating them better. . . . What elevates The Poetry of Pop, though, is the continuous animating presence of Bradley’s humour, intelligence and eye for detail. . . . I have never read a smarter, clearer or more compelling guide to reading poetry."—Tim Smith-Laing, Daily Telegraph"Bradley deploys a formidable set of skills. He has an acute ear, dazzling command of seemingly the entire history of pop and a pleasingly wide range of taste, drawing on examples from Gershwin to Guns 'n' Roses to make his points. His prose has precision and clarity when discussing even the most recondite of literary terms. As with all good teachers, his passion for his subject animates his writing and makes his enthusiasm nearly communicable."—Michael Lindgren, Washington Post"Having wrestled with the poetics of rap and hip-hop in his earlier tomes, Bradley here buckles the reader into place for a trip through the myriad effects of pop. . . . Along the way, the language of serious poetry criticism is put to engaging use . . . [and] makes for some interesting insights."—Dickon Edwards, The Wire“I’m not sure what to call The Poetry of Pop, beyond superb.”—Kevin Dettmar, American Literary History"Author Adam Bradley finds the poetry in a century of popular music, from the tunes and lyrics of Bob Dylan and Rihanna to Beyoncé and the Beatles."—Parade magazine“I’m not sure what to call The Poetry of Pop, beyond superb. . . . [The book] is a towering achievement: it provides a structure and a wealth of rich, close readings to make us all better critics of rock and pop. All those trying to do that work owe Bradley a great debt.”—Kevin Dettmar, American Literary History"This book mounts a powerful defense of pop music’s artistry. Bradley’s book is filled with provocative claims, offered clearly, intelligently, and persuasively."—David Caplan, Ohio Wesleyan University"Adam Bradley ingeniously unknots an argument ongoing since the first listener spun down the AM dial in search of the right song: what is the relationship between the words and notes in pop music? With accessible virtuosity, Bradley examines pop music’s motifs and lyric gestures in new and wholly unexpected ways. This superb book is a must for all of us who love the language of music and are moved as much by the lyrics as by the guitar solos."—Adrian Matejka, author of The Big Smoke"Idiosyncratic and infuriating, refusing systems and standards, this mad little book is irreplaceable for its appendices alone."—Stephin Merritt, The Magnetic Fields"Adam Bradley has written a groundbreaking study. Its critical mélange of literary criticism, musicology, neuroscience, and songwriters is especially apt, imaginative, and noteworthy."—Anthony Bolden, University of Kansas

Not what I expected. Boring and repetitive. It's just nonsense stuff about music. As a song writer myself much of the stuff he says is not true. For example, Axl Rose wasn't thinking music theory when he wrote songs. He was probably high and at the right place at the right time. Bad book

Great book. Perfect condition and delivery.

a ok

This is an interesting and comprehensive analysis of the relationship between words and music in popular music. Author and professor of English ..... does a creditable job of taking apart and assigning names to rhythmic and poetic elements in various popular songs. Each chapter is devoted to a different aspect of music: Lyric and Song, Reading, LIstening, Rhythm, Rhyme, etc.In addition, the author muses about in general: are lyrics poetry? Are they comparable in value to words of Shakespeare and others? How do words and music interact to produce an effect? and so on. Sometimes this gets a bit repetitious, but the questions are valuable ones. Bradley refers to music from the past as well as more current music, citing a wide variety of songwriters and performers. This is not a quick read, but there is much information packed into 300 or so pages. I found his writings about lyrics (particularly about the use of rhyme) more compelling than those about music. Perhaps this reflects his background and expertise as a professor of English. All in all, this is an impressive and interesting work for those wishing to go deeply into the subject. Recommended to readers with a far reaching interest in this subject.

Adam Bradley is a professor and this book is from Yale University Press, so please know that it is an academic treatise, and quite scholarly. It's not inaccessible, but if you're looking for a read aimed at a popular audience, this is not it. As a casual reader, I found this book better managed in sections, but I can see how in the context of a course and discussion it would be quite helpful. His focus is on lyrics, which he examines as poetry (though he certainly takes the music into context). I felt sometimes as though his points were belabored, but I was particularly interested at the points where he made connections across time and genre.Keep a computer or your phone nearby so you can check out some of the songs you're not familiar with - it helps to make his points clearer and the read more entertaining. Too bad there's not an option to produce a version with samples of the music embedded.

This is a scholarly work analyzing the poetry of pop music. There is not as much of an analyzation of the late 50’s and early 60’s as there is of later years; the former which had a huge reliance on rhyme. At times the work is very over methodical and at points there seems to be less of an emotional response to the whole of music itself. There are many perceptions into lyrics that probably have not occurred to the reader and listener. At the end are almost 80 pages of notes and appendix to the book. This is a study of language and music that all who listen might enjoy.

Other reviews are correct that this is a very dense book - really, almost a textbook for an upper-level music class and Adam Bradley's academic background is on clear display. However - I was really intrigued by a lot of his observations and conclusions and ideas, and even if many of them were over my head he made me think about music and lyrics in a way I hadn't before. Some of it's been told before - but even the "Yesterday/Scrambled Eggs" story that is old hat suddenly had a new depth to it. Discussion about vowels, rhymes, ghost rhymes, how contrived lyrics become much deeper when actually sung - it's all obvious, sure, but you still need somebody to explain WHY we care and why we notice. You have to give it a solid chance and you can't skim it. It will be work - and it's not an "entertaining" read, but it IS insightful. I think the challenge for most readers is you don't really want to read this cover-to-cover, but if you put it aside and come back to it, you'll need to be refreshed on terms and theory. And, it does require at least a passing background with music theory for easy accessibility - since I don't really have that, I had to make a lot of assumptions on what he was talking about, but I feel like I got 75 percent of it.It is a Yale U. Press book, so you know coming in that it's not "general" nonfiction - but it's not so difficult that any music fan won't at least find some neat thoughts here. As a gift, this would be a good idea because a reader could just have fun with it without the investment. If you buy it for yourself, expect to do some work, but I think some of these observations will be a revelation.

This is a wonderfully researched document about popular music which lacked the heart -- the emotion of what I was seeking. Rather than being a disappointment, it just satisfied on another level. Therefore, I most definitely recommend it for anyone devoted to the artistry of music, but I'd advise you to seek out evidence of that emotional arousal elsewhere.
