Knitting Fresh Brioche: Creating Two-Color Twists & Turns, by Nancy Marchant

Review

"Throughout the book, Marchant does a wonderful job of breaking two-color brioche into its component parts, reducing its complexity and making it accessible. . . . Marchant is widely recognized as the expert on brioche stitch, and her continued explorations of such knitting will appeal to experienced knitters looking for the next big trend." —Library Journal

Years ago, I paid for a private lesson to learn how to knit basic two color brioche and walked away with empty pockets with no results. I took Nancy's brioche knitting class on Craftsy and made two scarves in a month. I loved it so much that I had to get this book to keep myself in practice. Brioche knitting is fun and addictive. The stitch patterns shown in this book are stunning and I found myself saying to my husband that Nancy Marchant is the Alice Starmore of Brioche knitting. He said, "That is high praise." He loves the book too and everyone has made requests already.. There is not one thing in this book that I do not want to do. The patterns and stitch designs are so nice. You can't help but be inspired. This one is a keeper!

First off, I should probably say that I consider myself an advanced beginner when it comes to knitting. I have tried many types of knitting with success, so when I saw this book I thought..."I can handle that!" I had never heard of brioche knitting, but when I saw the picture on the cover of this book I knew this was the book I had to buy. Now that I have this book and have read it and tried some stitches, I realize that I probably should have started with Nancy Marchant's first book, Knitting Brioche: The Essential Guide to the Brioche Stitch. That being said, I was still able to learn everything I needed from this book.Things you ought to know:Brioche is different from "normal" knitting, but you will need to have mastered the standard knitting stitches to understand the more complex brioche knitting. This book consists of 3 major parts. Part one is how to brioche knit. It includes the special cast on, the new types of stitches, increases, decreases, fixing errors, special cast off methods, and how to read brioche charts. Part 2 is a dictionary of brioche stitches. Part 3 is a small collection of scarf patterns. It also includes some information on how to modify patterns for things like one color brioche and circular brioche. This book barely touches on one color brioche, so if that is where you want to start I would definitely get her other book instead. Each pattern includes both line by line directions and charts. The last thing you ought to know is that gauge and yarn weight are unimportant for most of these patterns, which I love!Pros of the book:The stitch patterns in this book are very complex, but expertly explained. The pictures show every aspect of the stitches without leaving you guessing how she got from one step to another. Each stich that is demonstrated is pictured in both American and continental style (which I find helpful since my teenage daughter knits in a different style then I do). The stitch dictionary is filled with stitches that you can't find anywhere else. I also found the knowledge imparted in this book clear enough to assist anyone that wanted to make up their own stitch patterns. The pictures and examples are gorgeous. She always lets you know what type of yarn she used, what sized needles, what size her projects are, how many she cast on in her sample pieces, etc. She also does not try to convince you that her yarns are the only ones that will work for her projects. Last but not least, brioche is pretty cool and there aren't many other places out there to learn it.Cons:Even though I gave this book a 5 star rating, there are a couple of minor problems which I hope they will fix in the next edition to book. First of all, I really wish the binding on this book were different. The patterns are complex enough that I am referring back to it often and I really wish it were bound in a way where it would stay open (like a spiral binding.) Second. I wish the charts were a little more contrasting so they would turn out more crisp when I copy them. This wouldn't really be an issue if they resolved issue number one. I don't consider either of these enough of a problem to knock it down a star. I could easily take it to a print shop and have them spiral bind it for me. There only other issue to mention is the lack of an errata. I am guessing that will come later. It isn't unusual for such a new book to have some errors and I have already found one. In the pattern "Icicle" they forgot to print the instructions for the set up rows in the line by line instructions. This wasn't a big deal since it was in the chart and set up rows are pretty much the same anyway, but I will admit I was a little confused at first... wondering if for some reason this pattern was able to skip those otherwise essential rows. Once again, I will not take a star off for this since it is most likely just a matter of time until the errata becomes available. All in all, this book was excellent. After some practice and a few sample swatches, I have been able to get the hang of brioche knitting and am ready to start making the gorgeous shall on the cover.

Yes, there are projects in this book. But it's so much more than that! Nancy not only gives you beautiful patterns to knit, she also gives you a fabulous foundation for brioche knitting that will allow you to completely understand the way that brioche fabric is made so that you can create your own brioche patterns. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone who wants to either learn basic brioche knitting or master it. As an added benefit, Nancy Marchant and Mercedes Tarasovich-Clark both teach Craftsy classes on brioche knitting. So if you buy this book (or any other brioche knitting tome) and find yourself baffled, head over and take a class on it! Start with Nancy's class if you knit English or Mercedes's class if you knit continental. I found that Nancy's brioche knitting is much more intricate and masterful, but that some people had a hard time understanding her techniques because she throws instead of picks. Good luck!

This is definitely not a book for the beginning knitter. But, these scarves are just amazing. I'm hanging in there, and am about half way through my first scarf. This book is fantastic.I'm an intermediate knitter, but not that familiar with brioche. I decided to make a plain two color brioche scarf with worsted weight yarn to gain experience before I started my chosen pattern (Willow, pictured on the cover). Thank goodness I did that. Although the cast-on, charting technique, brioche increase and decreases, and working with Kidsilk Haze yarn were all new to me, I was at least familiar with knitting two color brioche before I got started. If I had to do it all over again, I might not have started with Kidsilk Haze since it is a thin yarn that clings to everything and can be really challenging to unknit. Before you start knitting one of the scarves from this book, I would become familiar with the following:1. knitting two color brioche2. unknitting (tinking) two color brioche3. being able to "read" two color brioche i.e. mistakes are apparent when you see them, you automatically fish out the stitch that usually hides under the yarnover, you think it's obvious what to do on the light side and dark side of the fabric4. how to insert a lifeline into your knitting. I used a lifeline at first, and frequently had to unknit and use the lifeline to fix my mistakes. Once my scarf was further along, my mistakes became less frequent and I was able to stop using the lifeline.5. the 2 color italian cast-on6. knitting with kidsilk haze7. the 2 color italian cast-on using kidsilk hazeFor me, it was completely worth the time to learn these things before I started on my Willow scarf. You can read the introductory materials and easily figure out how to knit a two color brioche scarf without any increases or decreases. Or, you could buy Nancy's other book to learn. There are also online brioche classes on craftsy.com and knitfreedom.com. Look up using a knitting lifeline if you have not done that before, I found it invaluable. The effort that has gone into this book is really impressive. There are very clear and detailed instructions on knitting brioche, various increases, decreases, the italian two color cast on and bind off. Nancy Marchant developed (as far as I can tell) this way of charting two color brioche patterns. Once I got the hang of the chart (since each row of brioche takes two passes, it takes two rows of the chart to display the row) it was very clear what to do. I believe she also developed the language (bark and burp) to describe the stitches. It might not seem like a big deal, but I had previously tried brioche based on a pattern that used different terminology and gave up in deep frustration. The terminology makes brioche understandable. The book contains a library of brioche stitch combinations. The scarf patterns are striking and beautiful.

What the Best College Students Do

Review

“Some very good books are worth reading for a few splendid pages alone. Ken Bain's What the Best College Students Do is one such book. His interview with the TV satirist Stephen Colbert is revealing both for its insight into Colbert and for its ideas on how higher education ought to work... What the Best College Students Do combines interviews with a review of academic research on university learning. The book builds on Bain's 2004 bestseller, What the Best College Teachers Do. To some extent, both books state what we already know―that straight A's are nice, but hardly guarantee a happy or productive life. Instead, it takes a personal sense of purpose. The 'best' students are curious risk-takers who make connections across disciplines. By following those instincts―rather than simply chasing 'success'―the best students achieved it. Bain's new book is a wonderful exploration of excellence.”―David A. Kaplan, Fortune online“Bain reports on research about highly 'creative,' productive, and socially conscious students and how they negotiated college to attain their goals. They developed a 'deep,' transformative learning orientation, tenaciously pursuing what mattered to them over high grades. He reports that these successful students turned failure/mistakes into learning opportunities; learned to make choices/decisions in murky situations by reflecting and learning from past experience; and maintained self-esteem, which sustained them through failures or setbacks on their way to achieving goals. Bain writes in noncomplex language and artfully weaves scholarly literature and rich narratives from dozens of interviewees into a provocative, interesting, and fast-moving book... This book is informative and beneficial not only for current and future college students, but also professors, researchers, and parents and caregivers who strive to foster successful learning in children.”―D. Truty, Choice“The experiences of successful students are certainly burnished by exposure to the length and breadth of a liberal curriculum, but they are spurred by awe and fascination. The best students seek the meaning behind the text, its implications and applications, and how those implications interact with what they have already learned. To think in so rich and robust a way as Bain describes―'trying to answer questions or solve problems that they regard as important, intriguing, or just beautiful'―is an aspiration of the first order...A soundly encouraging guide for college students to think deeply and for as long as it takes.”―Kirkus Reviews“What the Best College Students Do delivers on the promise of its title with rich descriptions of what the best college students do, how they think, and what they believe. Bain challenges his readers to give up the standard model of short-term success, in favor of deep learning with payoffs in living purposefully and well. I wish every college student, and every parent, could approach higher education with this sage orientation. It isn't just about the 'A.'”―Pamela Barnett, Temple University“We are always telling students to 'find their passion.' Now we have a book that looks at how that happens, and how we can encourage students to use their uniqueness, and be more curious and more resilient. Ken Bain can really tell a story and it is very rare for a book based upon research to be such a compelling read.”―José Antonio Bowen, Southern Methodist University“Ken Bain, author of the best-selling What the Best College Teachers Do, has written the perfect follow-up. He skillfully weaves together some of the best research about effective learning strategies with moving stories about remarkable life-long learners. Some of them had great teachers. But most of them succeed because of what they did for themselves. If every college teacher read the first book and every student read this new one, we'd have taken a huge step toward solving some of the great challenges for higher education.”―Thomas Luxon, Dartmouth College

I picked up this book in pursuit of straight A's. What I got instead was a chance to completely change the way I view education and learning. The goal of this book is not to teach you how to make the grade (although there is advice for doing that at the end of the book) but to show you a process and viewpoint of education that leads to growth and success in life after school. Although the book is not perfect it did change my life, and perhaps save a doomed to fail college career. Here are some of the main things I liked and disliked about the book.Liked: (note the length of discussion of each of these topics varies)-How it encourages learning, growth, self discovery and curiosity over success and jumping through hoops (grades)-Encourages one to take control of your own education.-discussion of intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation-focusing on good questions over correct answers-explanation and discussion of strategic and surface learners vs deep learning-the benefits of taking responsibility for outcomes and focusing on the ability to change the future-why self compassion is more important than self esteem-discusses attitudes towards failure and why certain ones are better-how embracing the unknown and changing your language can make you solve problems better-the mindful process of deep learning-effects of prejudice on learning and how to overcome it-how living in a different culture effects learning-the effect of competition and comparative thinking on learning-how viewing the world as flexible can enhance learning and growth-7 levels of thinking, from basic to most advanced-effective ways to learn (can be used to make good grades)Disliked:(Mostly personal preference)-that there were many long winded stories. While at some times I found them inspiring and useful, others times I got nothing out of them, probably just my mood at the time though.-that there was no clear outline of the principles in the book and how to apply them, of course if one pays attention they can make their ownI gave this book a 5 out 5 stars because I feel it changed my life for the better, especially in regards to college. I believe that if you apply the principles in this book, it will help you get more out of college, and life.God Bless!Cody

I was recommended this book by an instructor I trusted and although I'm not big on reading, I really enjoyed this book. I use the techniques it has shown me within my everyday life. It really has made me a better student by making me think differently and I don't think I could have done that without this book. The main reason I love this book is because I am constantly thinking of ways my classes overlap and connect with one another. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to improve their learning techniques or anyone looking to challenge their process of thought and memorization.

This is a great book for everyone. Many studies suggest that a growth mindset can help people fulfill their potential more effectively. When I finished this book, I marveled at how much I had learned from this book. The author gave the readers lots of stories from creative and successful people, and it shows not only our mind can change our body, but it could also change our life too. The author wants to inspire college students by using those remarkable examples as motivation to deliver his message about how the most successful people are often deep learners. The successful people also have very good growth mindsets which helped them achieve their knowledge and goals. This book talks about Professor Paul Baker and how he teaches his students that growth is the discovery of the dynamic power of the mind. Mr. Baker encouraged his students to have conversations with themselves and discover themselves because knowing oneself can really make a difference. If people learn to celebrate and appreciate who they are and the special qualities and experiences they bring, they can create in ways that no one else can. I was amazed at how much people can change and improve themselves through a changing their mindset. I am going to practice what I learn from this book to become a better me.

This book describes me to a tee! Learning for the sake of learning. I bought it for my grand-daughter who is a senior in High School. Hope she loves it as much. So powerful. How to get the most out of any college education no matter where you go.

Professor Ken Bain ha written an excellent book on how to be a successful college student , better , a successful human being. Lots of examples of how learning deeply, instead of being overly concerned with achieving good grades is the keys to be a healthy, happy and successful individual

This book isn't like the gimmicky "how to get all As" books out there. Instead, the author, a former college professor and now provost, interviews a variety of individuals who have made a creative impact on their fields. Many of these individuals are also financially successful, but financial success is not the focus of the book. Instead, the author describes the patterns in the attitudes, habits, and skills that these individuals cultivated while they were in college years ago. Some of the patterns he noticed through his interviews include a growth mindset towards intelligence, genuine curiosity, a reliance on intrinsic motivation, an interdisciplinary approach to solving problems, and an embrace of failure. He showcases these patterns through anecdotes (a little heavily a times) and current research, and he explains how today's college students can incorporate these characteristics into the approach to their own education. Insightful and accessible to today's college students, this book will make an impact on most readers and help them strive towards the deep education necessary to make a creative impact in whatever career field they pursue.

Excellent! I went back to school and this book gave me a different perspective on how to learn and WHY to learn. I highly recommend it. It is a little slow to start, but I skipped around until I came full circle. Great educational philosophy.

Now that I have finished the entire series, thought I would submit a reviewThe story of Tavi is revealed little by little with each book. The cast of characters are quite likeable with doses of humor thrown in. You almost feel that the characters are part of the family by the final book. The magical system is intriguing and makes for interesting situations. When I first started the series I expected that a character with no magical skill(no fury crafting) would devolve into the usual cliches. But thankfully Jim Butcher is a better author than that and I was not able to easily predict the plot.I thoroughly recommend this series and has become one of my favorites. My only negative feedback is the amount of battle description throughout the series. There are complex and lengthy descriptions of both large scale battles and one on one battles that really don't add much to the story. Otherwise, I greatly enjoyed the adventure!I'm ready for more from Jim butcher!

This is the culmination of the Codex Alera series, and it goes out with a bang. Tavi is coming back to Alera leading a most unusual army, only to find that his fellow Alerans are up against the wall with the merciless Vord crushing their greatest strongholds and killing their strongest furycrafting lords. At least by this point, Tavi is finally coming into his own furycrafting strength, but even he is no match for the might of the Vord. Then again, Tavi has always been smarter than he was strong, and he makes good use of that in this final war.In addition to Tavi and his crew, we see some fine performances put in by the remaining furycrafters. Even Aquataine puts in a good show. But nothing compares to the rabbits Tavi’s uncle Bernard manages to pull out of his hat. Much of those particular tricks had their origins as wild ideas from Tavi years before, but Bernard has taken them to their most impressive ends. Perhaps the most world-shattering moment comes at the command of Bernard, as a hundred commoners throw down a demonstration of power that would completely spend a High Lord’s power… and then do it again the very next minute, and the next, and the next. It was one of those moments where even as the reader you stick her head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye.I won’t spoil the end, but I’ll just say that it was quite satisfying. Just about everyone got what they deserved, in one flavor or another. In particular, the epilogue was good, tying up a number of loose ends and giving some hint about what was to follow in the years and decades ahead. As one character said, the interesting times were definitely over, and yet it felt the new story of Alera was just beginning. So, if you’re contemplating this series – particularly if you’re struggling through the slow first book, Furies of Calderon, give it a shot. The road to the payoff is long and fun, and the payoff is definitely worth it.

I love Jim Butcher's writing style--and thank God I do, otherwise I never would have been able to make it thru 6 volumes of the Codex Alera. I love that he can build a scene as finely detailed at he does, but halfway through book 5 I was thinking about abandoning the series (which I HATE to do) but there *is* such a thing as *too much* detail! Seriously, this could easily have been shortened to maybe 4 books, but I can see why he felt the need for disparity between novels to fall where they did.Butcher is great at creating characters that are easy to love --and love to hate, for that matter. Kitai and the Marat could have been fleshed out a bit better, though. For all his detail, you'd think he would put a little more into his main character 's only love interest and her people. But the thing I kept finding myself wanting was more background and lore of the Furies. Shoot-- the title of all 6 books included the Furies--and we're just supposed to use our imagination to fill in the (fairly gigantic) gaps?? Come on, man! If we had your imagination, we wouldn't need to read your books, now would we?

This is the last in the series and I very much enjoyed the series. It is not mind bending, it is not full of surprises it is good old fashioned fantasy and magic with main characters that are enjoyable, honorable and mildly conflicted. The supporting cast is both what you would expect and what you probably enjoy most when choosing this type of fiction. My only criticism is that after reading the rest of the series some of the themes that are detailed in each multiple times got a bit repetitious. Since the books barely stand on their own without reading the others it seems the repetition could have been mitigated. However, I especially enjoyed the underlying theme of different cultures banding together against a foe that would destroy them all. I thought the books did well to illustrate that the cultures had strengths and weaknesses even those that were only lightly investigated such as the icemen. I also appreciated the thought put into the consequences of certain new tactics. From an engineering stand point the attention to the difficulties inherent when using items in new and unusual ways (spoiler: Ice Ships) showed a depth of consideration that is easily glossed over in this genre.Having discovered this author via the Dresden files I was pleasantly surprised by his excellent foray into Fantasy.

I really like the way this book was written, as it provide a quick reference to the main principles and tools that one needs in ops mgmt

Good start in Operations Management. I would appreciate more references to topics that are not covered for obvious reasons.

Excellent book. Highly recommend. Compared and contrasted with academic books used in Universities - and this was excellent.

Great read so far. Only thru the first few chapters, and already have had a handful of "aha" moments.

The book explains in plain english the various details that you need to know in order to be able to use the operations management as a course to credit in school or as a way of even starting a business if you want.It is a great book and worth the money you spend on it.

Not enough info.

Not as usefull as they say it is.

Easy to read and understand. It highlighted all of the critical points of operations and provided helpful formulas and tips.
