How could I NOT have his written words to help maintain the memory of his beautiful travels. I watch his videos again and again, never tiring of his simplicity and love of gardens and gardening...

After watching his TV shows I thought I'd try a book, and this is a comprehensive garden book from planning, climate considerations, and many kind of plants including fruit, flowers, trees and shrubs. Gorgeous photos.

This is my favorite Monty Don book. It is filled with useful information and it inspires me to get outside and work!

My wife is an avid gardener and a huge Monty Don fan. If you've been lucky enough to watch the British gardening show, Gardener's World, then you know what a joy it is to watch Monty work his gardens at Long meadow. The Complete Gardener is a valuable resource which every gardener should have as a reference. Monty's details from the name of plants to how to plant them is meticulous, BUT, without being dry and boring. I highly recommend this book to any level of gardener. If you don't already have this book as a reference, please pick up a copy. Trust me, you'll learn something new on every page.

I had the pleasure of working with one of the authors 15 years ago. But don't let that sway you. I truly appreciate the scope and effort put into this book. We will use it as an outline for how our analysts should approach analyzing a credit. Chapter 3 alone is worth the price of admission as the authors list the elusive "qualitative" factors that go into a credit rating, beyond what the ratios tell you it should be. While the book barely scratches the surface of certain analytical methods (the Merton Model got 1/2 a page), and it is written more for the layman or student, I still learned many things. And I've been in the business 20+ years. The prior reviewer, and many others will say they wished they wrote this book. I will too. I even briefly started my own version recently. But I first turned to S&P's ratings criteria as an outline. As such, the right people wrote this book. The authors fully used the vast resources and data mining of S&P. This certainly feels like a team effort. The telecom analyst wrote a piece on the rapid decline of telecom credits in 2000-2002, and other professionals added real life examples. The book organizes itself in the top down approach to analysis. It starts with sovereign risk, then moves to industry, then company business/competitive risk. It then highlights the ratios to look for, and also gives data on seniority and recovery values for specific levels of debt. It then uses these tools to analyze a fictional company. It ends with case studies that cover M&A, sovereign risk and other topical reviews that act as a real life summary to what you just learned. Highly recommended. Well done.

This book is long overdue. It typically takes a credit or corporate banking professional several years and several levels (analyst, senior analyst, associate/assistant vice president, and finally, vice president) to piece together the knowledge and analytical skills presented within this wonderful book. The book offers a comprehensive foundation in business, financial, and strategic analysis (among several other related topics) in a very easily digested and understood manner. I guess my only complaint is that I didn't have the opportunity to write it myself!! I would advise every credit or relationship management team leader to purchase this book for their entire team -- particularly for their analysts and associates (although... on second thought, perhaps everyone on the team should have a copy in their desk drawer.) Bottom line: Highly-recommended. AAA+++

If you need a basic guide to credit analysis this book is great. Understand that it is a practioner's guide moreso than an academic textbook which means it's shorter and less detailed. I would recommend supplementing it with an actual textbook on financial statement analysis and financial risk management if you do not have a financial background. Overall though it's worth the price.

I had read other reviews saying that this book is quite topical, and I have to say they were right. I work for a community bank analyzing small businesses, there was almost nothing in here that was of use to me. I realize that this is SP and that the type of analysis they do involves large corporations, but it was still too generic and too specific in all the wrong places. I would have really appreciated a chapter on how to analyze distressed borrowers, but there was nothing in here on this subject beyond the obvious.

If you ever wondered how credit ratings are set, here's the answer. The authors are managing directors at Standard & Poor's and John Bilardello manages the corporate ratings division, few know more about how credit ratings are set. In all effects this is a book on how S&P performs credit analyses, outlining both the methodology and thought process. It was published just a few years prior to the financial crisis when the credit rating agencies were at the zenith of their influence.The book is organized into three parts where the first covers an analysis of the company. The process looks to country risks, sector risks and company specific risks. The financial position and future cash flows are analysed, all to enable forming an opinion on the probability of whether the company will pay interest and principal in time. For me the fact that the process starts with the country risk, and the potential cap this imposes on the credit, rating feels a bit backward but perhaps it's just a matter of ticking all the boxes and the order is less important. There is a useful and comprehensive check list used to evaluate the level of governance-, management- and accounting risk. It's interesting to see that just 8 years ago the rock solid, self-evident opinion was that developed markets are stable and credit worthy while emerging markets are volatile, dependent on capital flows and doubtful credits. For someone with equity background it's also a bit amusing, although fully logical, that instead of using a bear case, normal case and a bull case in the scenario analysis the credit analyst uses a normal case, a bear case and a default case...The second part of the book covers the more technical and esoteric area of various debt instruments, different types of terms and conditions, debt structures etc. and the subsequent effects on the recovery prospect should a firm become insolvent. This area is clearly a heavy duty task to take on for the analyst. I get the same feeling reading about indenture contracts, covenants etc. as when I wrote IPO prospectuses once upon a time. It's a world for the initiated.In the last part of the book - not counting the many and extensive examples of credit analyses in the appendix - the components of a simplified credit rating system are presented. In the end the credit rating should mirror the risk for losses for creditors. To make an informed judgement about this risk you need to form an opinion on the probability of default by analysing business risks, financial risks and liquidity risks plus also an opinion on the probable recovery rate should the worst come true. In some aspects this analysis is down to experience and feeling but in others it's more about process and statistics. How the various factors were summarized and weighted was in my opinion the most giving part of the text.A few complementary statistical and market price driven methods for estimating credit quality such as Altman's Z-score, the Merton model etc. are briefly presented. The authors however clearly take a stand for a fundamentally driven analysis as opposed to using market prices of for example CDS contracts, for credit control. In this they were probably slightly behind the curve with regards to current trends in 2005, but they are also the more credible today post the 2008 financial crisis and after the backlash for the use of market prices for risk control.This is a very useful and comprehensive text that I definitely would want to have on my desk as a credit analyst. Is it fun to read? No, not really. It's too much a collection of check lists that the authors then elaborate on and you never really feel any market nerve in the text. As the credit analyst seams to put 99,9 percent of the effort into answering "Will it be repaid?", I can't - after reading this book - help but wonder if there could be excess returns in devoting at least 10 percent of the analysis to the question "Will this bond be upgraded in 1,5 years' time?".This is a review by investingbythebooks.com

I read this book in about 30 minutes. I found the juicing receipts to be very user friendly, affordable, and simple to make. Extremely beneficial read. I like how this book is laid out. Rather than talking about a bunch of nonsense, this book is alphabetically organized by common diseases and what juice recipes are recommended for each recipe. The author gives a brief description of why she recommends the ingredients, mostly based on scientific research. I have tried two different recipes and found them very tasty.

IThis is the 2nd volume in Martha Wells’ “Murderbot Diaries”. It’s also the 2nd of my May New Releases – the first being “The Wolf: Under The Northern Sky” – which turned out to be a beautiful and thoroughly enjoyable book.I enjoyed “All Systems Red” – enough to convince me to buy the three sequels. The next book – “Rogue Protocol” – is scheduled for release in August of this year. Contrary to what I wrote in the first review, I did actually did buy all volumes in hardcover. Given what I know Wells is capable of – I guess I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt and just assume that she’s going to do something special with this story.After reading this second book, I have to say…Murderbot is growing on me. I was right about the holes in “All Systems Red” – Wells is parsing out her backstory and is filling in the blanks as she goes. MB is becoming a more substantial and relate-able character as the story progresses. He’s growing and defining himself – starting to come to terms with his independence and deciding who he wants to be. Most of that growth is driven by his need to interact with a growing group of diverse individuals and the choices those interactions force on him. He obligates himself to a new group of humans – first via a contract he negotiates and then in response to a series of ethical choices that result from that contractual obligation. Those choices allow you to better understand MB, how he thinks about himself and how he feels about the humans who created him.Just as important are the relationships he forms with other machine intelligences. The first and most entertaining of these is the alliance or friendship or something in between that he forms with the Artificial Intelligence – ART – responsible for the operation of a Research Transport vessel that he uses to escape from the world of his first set of human patrons. ART is a surprise for MB – he’d assumed that this would be an uncommunicative machine intelligence. In fact, ART turns out to be as communicative and as richly complex as MB and their relationship transitions from arms length wary to mutually supportive and amusingly familiar. ART is arrogantly confident in his superior abilities but humanizes as a result of his interactions with MB. As the story progresses, they become an effective, entertaining, almost lovable team united partially by the boredom of their constrained lives in service to human beings that are – in many ways – far less capable than either of them.Long to short – this story is becoming increasingly interesting and entertaining. I actually enjoyed “Artificial Condition” more than I did “All Systems Red”. It was richer, more complex and it finally allowed me to connect in a more meaningful way to MB. I can’t help but think that I’m going to really wind up liking this guy as the story progresses.I honestly have only one complaint and it has nothing to do with the book itself. I don’t like the way Martha Wells and the publisher are commercializing the work – hence the Razor / Blades quote. The story is being sold as 4 separate novellas:All Systems Red – 2017Artificial Condition – May 2018Rogue Protocol – August 2018Exit Strategy – October 2018They’re sold separately as hardcovers at the price of $16.19 and as e-copies for $9.99. In reality, these are 4 sections of one book – obvious as you read through each separately – and could easily have been published in one volume. The fact that they were all released within an 18 month period only confirms that the Author and the publisher made a pretty crass commercial decision to break the book into four pieces and sell them separately to maximize revenue.Instead of paying $25 for a single hardcover volume, I’m forced to purchase 4 separate novellas for a combined cost of ~$68.00 in hardcover or ~$40.00 in digital format. Before you say it, I will – shame on me – no one forced me to spend the money – I know I’m being played. Nevertheless, I’m really enjoying the books and I want to get my hands on them as they become available. It just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth and it makes me wonder about Wells’ attitude towards her fans and readers. Wells and her publisher gave me the Razor but she’s selling me the blades – one at a time – at a pretty high price.My recommendation – wait until an omnibus edition is published and just read it straight through. You’ll enjoy the story AND you won’t feel like you’re being exploited. I wish I was able to take my own advice. 🙁

This story is way too short for the price. I want to read the next one but I certainly am not going to shell out $10 for a novella.

Like so many others, I fell for the first Murderbot book and gleefully awaited the series' return. What a disappointment. This novella reads like a mere chapter in a longer book. The plot is paper-thin, the characters cardboard cutouts, and the writing is serviceable at best. At worst, the prose is hugely repetitive and bland. I paid $10 for the Kindle edition of the book and it took me less than two hours to read it. And now the publisher wants me to pay another $20 for the next two installments. I can abide by reading a poorly written book (it's not even a book, really, but a short story) but I hate getting ripped off.

Murderbot continues to be entertaining, though this installment doesn’t cohere as well as the first, and I was under the impression I was getting a novel, not a novella for the price of a full book.

I enjoyed the first Murderbot book, and ordered Artifiial Condition assuming it would be a full length novel. For almost $10 I want more than a few pages. This is a neat little story, and Wells writes well. But come on - I feel ripped off

Charging $30 for a novel by breaking it up into 160 page segments and selling each novella at the price of a novel is ridiculous. I won't be buying the rest of the series. Currently the next two "books" in the series are on pre-order at $9.99 apiece and each at 160 pages.

This is the first time I have ever bothered to review a book, and I'm doing it solely because I am ticked off. I've been a big time Martha Wells fan since Death of the Necromancer. Prior to that, I stopped reading SciFi because most of it was pretty lame, but I became a huge fan and pretty much bought each of her books the day it was available, happily paying full price for the provided enjoyment. Then yesterday afternoon I started reading this book. Murderbot is a bit too traditional SciFi for me, but his quirkiness and the quality writing make up for it. I was getting into the book, having traveled to the coffee shop and settled into my favorite big squishy chair, when BAM!, the book ended? My initial thought was my Kindle was acting up, but no, this is a really short book. That's fine for $3.99, but for the ten bucks I paid I feel my loyalty has been taken advantage of. Now, I'll probably continue the series because I have a ton of love an respect for the author, but I do feel a bit betrayed. I'm retired and read like a fiend, so I need to get decent value. If this is the "new thing", then I'll probably have to find a new favorite author to love and respect.
