I love Pat Conroy. I mourn his death and wish he could have lived another fifty years, bringing us his gorgeous prose. My Losing Season, his memoir of the 1966-67 Citadel basketball team on which he played as a senior at that institution is classic Conroy. I have to admit, not knowing the game of basketball very well, I got bogged down just a bit as he described each of the games of that season. But the book is more about him and the human condition than it is about a game. Filled with Conroy’s wonderfully evocative metaphors—nobody is better at them—the book proposes the idea that perhaps we learn more from our failures than our successes. As we get to know his team members and his irascible coach, we want to reach out to each. And as Conroy fills us in at the end of the book on these characters thirty years later, we share their triumphs and tribulations in life. And, of course, hovering over it all is Conroy’s abusive father and long-suffering mother. We grow to understand these two, but I personally never grew to like the man, although Conroy says he came to love his dad unconditionally in the man’s later years. Perhaps that acceptance, for me, is for another book, and hopefully Conroy accomplished that in The Death of Santini, the sequel to his novel The Great Santini, which featured a leading character very much like, but different somewhat, his real father Don Conroy. We shall see, as I’ve just ordered that book. But with Conroy’s death, we are deeply cut; no one can fill his shoes, so we must be content with the body of work he left us.

Pat Conroy was not a very good writer, but he will give you a lot to relate to if you have an abusive parent.He went from an abusive father to an abusive and trashy basketball coach. He doesn't seem to realize that's normal. Abuse victims have a way of finding new abusers.The basketball material is mind-numbingly boring, unless you're a fan. There is a ton of content about games. Tedious. I read it for the material on the dysfunctional Conroy family and Citadel Bulldogs

I liked how Pat Conroy weaved the story of his relationship with his father(terrible) into his final season as a basketball point guard at the Citadel. The parallel relationship he has with his stoic coach makes you realize how much inner strength Conroy had to become a great basketball player and a famous writer in spite of all his hardships. As a basketball player in my youth I enjoyed revisiting the basketball court of the 1950s and 1960s which was different than today. Anyone who truly played sports will enjoy this but those who don't will find his personal struggles to reflect what many of us go through with different figures in our lives - some for us to overcome and some to remember as pillars of strength.

"My Losing Season" is a powerful book that uses the author's losing 1966-1967basketball season at The Citadel to explore whether one learns more from winning or from losing. From the opening line, "I was born to be a point guard, but not a very good one," to the end, Conroy has a gift for memorable, descriptive writing.I should preface my review by stating I don't enjoy basketball, which includes playing it growing up and now watching it live or on TV. In High School P.E., they nicknamed me "The Fouler" because I never made the transition from football where it is a good thing to knock people down and take the ball away! With that said, I thoroughly enjoyed this book because it is so much more than a story about the game of basketball. This is a memoir of Pat Conroy's life from the time he first picked up a basketball at age nine to his adult years where he became a successful writer. But even more than that, it is compelling story about endurance, hustle, and following one's dreams.While I felt great distress as Pat Conroy described his violent upbringing at the hands of an abusive father, I thrilled in the way God always seemed to provide for Pat. I also valued the lessons Pat learned from his losing season, the special memories he shared with his teammates, and how that season impacted all the players.

If the reader is familiar with Mr. Conroy's work then you know much of his material is taken from his horrible childhood. His 6'4", physically and verbally abusive, Marine dad made his and his siblings' lives a living hell. The memoir reenforces the highly dysfunctional nature of his family as well as life at the draconian Citadel in the mid-1960s. The core of this book is about how basketball was an integral part of the author's identity from age 9 until he graduated from the Citadel. Also, besides his teammates, his college coach, Mel Thompson, plays a big part in this story. Mr. Thompson was still alive when the author's book was published and if the former coach read the sucker, I can't imagine he was too pleased with the depiction of him.The book, however, is not just a story about basketball, but Mr. Conroy's wonderful game descriptions took me back to when I used to play. Their second game against VMI, which went into four overtimes, was an especially edge-of-your-seat chapter. The book has a lot of heart. The dialogue between the players sounds very authentic. I felt it had the right balance of suspense, insight and humor by the brutally honest Mr. Conroy. At the ripe age of 51, I still don't understand the coaching approach of using fear and intimidation to guide players. These sort of a-holes view sports as war and they're the tin-pot dicators on massive ego trips. Mr. Conroy also shows how insecure people like Mel Thompson leave lasting scars on many players well into their golden years. Instead of helping shape boys into men, they hinder such development because they themselves have never grown up. Mr. Conroy's coming-of-age story is a truly wonderful memoir for anyone who enjoys or enjoyed basketball.

I inherited some roses at my house from the previous owner so I was looking to better understand how to take better care of my roses and also learn the differences between hybrid tea, floribunda, grandiflora and polyantha, etc, as I am starting from scratch in learning how to identify my roses. This book includes helpful information on using both inorganic and organic methods of controlling diseases and pests, which I found most helpful as I am also just learning about common rose diseases and pests and insects that are harmful to roses. In the 'Praying Mantis' beneficial insects section, the author writes: "If you put a mantid on your computer screen and start moving the cursor around on the screen,sometimes the mantid will chase it and try to catch it." I thought that was pretty cute. I also learned a new term, 'rose wranglers', apparently these are folks who seek out old roses that still probably grow on old cemeteries or abandoned houses, and the wranglers may sometimes come across old roses/antique roses on private property and talk to the owners to get permission to collect some. So if you already have roses which are pretty established, this book offers great information on how to control rose diseases, how often to fertilize, etc. If you are starting from scratch, then this book will be one of your go-to and must-have books with plenty of good information on how to select, shop and plant roses, and the whole cycle of ongoing care and maintenance.There seems to not be that many comprehensive recent books on the market about roses care and rose gardening, so I was pleased to come across this title. The author also has a humorous tone and will put the novice rose gardener at ease.As an avid and interested rose keeper, I wanted a book filled with no nonsense,informative tips to help make my garden grow. This book is perfect for just that. Ms. Cordell is extremely knowledgeable about the health and history of these much beloved, yet complex breed of plants. I was also most impressed by her Attenborough like savvy regarding the different wild life and bugs that can help or hinder said plants. This is a guide I feel I'll be looking to many times in future.Rose to the Occasion is is a light-hearted approach to your rose garden, its challenges and charms.Really enjoyed the photos, and the determination to annihilate the rose predators. Grammie would have approved.Appreciate both organic and other approaches, and advice on how various methods work, and how much time and attention they need.Especially fond of the secret weapon's photo. the chicken. As city horticulturist with no staff taking care of about 20 gardens, plus a 300+ public rose garden, I was already running like crazy everywhere I went. I wanted roses that wouldn't wilt or croak or wrap themselves in blackspot every time I looked at them cross-eyed. I wanted tough roses, roses that took heat and drought and bug attacks and zombie apocalypses with aplomb and would still come out looking great and covered with scented blossoms. (And the blossoms HAD to be scented -there was no two ways about that.) I started reading rose books. I talked to Charles some more, which is always fun. Somewhere along the way, I got obsessed. I immersed myself in roses. I read about antique roses, which were making a comeback. Rose breeders, most notably David Austin, were crossing modern varieties with old varieties and to get roses that combined the best of the new and the old. Other breeders were creating roses that were tough and disease-resistant, such as the 'Knock-Out' landscape rose, which now you see everywhere.I planted some antique roses,and they looked great. I planted more. The rose garden was starting to look spiffy, even though I still had to take roses out every year due to the rose rosette virus. I even tucked in some annuals and perennials around the garden to doll up the place when the roses conked out in July and August. And so my obsession began.Roses are amazing plants. Many old roses have a long and storied history. Some species that were growing during the time of the Pyramids are still blooming today. And these roses are attractive and fragrant. History, fragrance, and beauty in one flower. What could be better?

New to rose gardening, I was searching for some good books on roses care and rose gardening. I came across this title on Amazon and downloaded the 99 cents Kindle version. The book is self-published and the quality of the writing is excellent. There are many beautiful photos of roses throughout the book (although the photos might be more exciting in the paperback version). There are chapters on choosing the best rose variety, shopping for roses, caring for roses, pruning and training, solving growing problems, beneficial insects, propagation, and monthly checklists. I received this book thru BookBub. I enjoyed reading it and getting a lot of ideas on how to improve my rose growing, the main problem at the present is I'm in an apartment with minimum space inside and absolutely no yard outside just a parking. I'll be moving in about 5-6 months and I'm definitely going to have a yard big enough for roses.

Stop and smell the roses, take time to enjoy them, even if you never thought you could grow a rose. Melissa's Rose book is one I have recommended to visitors at our local Rose Gardens. It is filled with easy to follow tips and ideas. She shares the highs and lows of these garden favorites.[Oh Melinda, I accidentally posted a review to the plagiarist, not you. I read this book as an audio book first and loved it so had to buy it. I wish it had color pictures but the material is great anyway. I am inspired to be a rosarian.

Nursery manager and propagator at the Garden in the Woods of the New England Wild Flower Society, Cullina has written a companion to his excellent The New England Wild Flower Society Guide to Growing and Propagating Wildflowers of the United States and Canada. A brief introduction covering general cultural information and how to use the book is followed by the "Encyclopedia of Plants," arranged alphabetically by genus, then species. Each genus entry introduces the genus and includes culture, uses, attraction to wildlife, and propagation methods. The following species entries contain USDA hardiness zones, soil type, native region, size, and flower season and color, ending with a descriptive paragraph. Color photographs complement the text. The final section explains propagation methods in general, then gives detailed information, by genus, on the best way to propagate each. Very comprehensive. Includes usual information plus interesting narrative about each plant. I like the addition of wildlife value of plant when appropriate. A good addition to a reference library. However, as a home gardener, I will use the Sternberg and Wilson Landscaping with Native Trees as my first choice reference. The info in their book is more reader friendly, has more photos, good descriptions of problems, wildlife value and as I'm an older reader- larger print.

William Cullina has struck a great balance in this book. Every time I pick it up I'm amazed at how it is both an informative reference and a very enjoyable read.Bill (can I call him that?) understands there are just as many amateur gardeners as there horticulturalist. In this book, he struck a balance with both audiences. For instance, I'm not a big fan of Latin plant names: I prefer to know the background of a plant, what it needs to thrive, its purpose, etc... When I look up a plant in this book, I get so much more. This makes the informative process extremely enjoyable as well as educational. Bill also gives phonetic spelling of the plants. It helps when you go to the nursery you'll feel less intimated by those who seem to speak Latin.For instance, I just bought 5 Artemisia plants to go with purple coneflower, Salvia, Russian Sage, etc... I had checked this volume out of the library many times then decided to buy it. This book has some of the best advice on growing woody vegetation from seed I have ever read.

This is a great reference book, well organized and well written. My first choice for a tree and shrub guide is Dirr's Hardy Trees and Shrubs, but since it is out of my price range I believe that William Cullina's book is by far the next best book on this subject. It's a great guide and also enjoyable to have around to browse through. My only regret with this book is that the illustrations are not always of the whole plant and there aren't enough of them.

William Cullina (Author), writes in a knowledgeable, practical way. He is very understandable, not like a text book, but like a teacher who knows his topic and speaks plain English. I would buy any of William Cullina books on nature and native plants to North America. I bought this book, and all the others by this Author.

Cullina is a genius. This is my second book of his that I have purchased for reference and as a local guide. It is very helpful for those that want to propagate native trees, shrubs and vines. His other book, Wildflowers, is a must-have as well.

This book is one of my favorites. I especially like it because it gives the pronounciation of the botanical plant names. After checking out the book at the local library several times over the past couple years, and finding someone else always had it for a long time when I wanted to read it again, I decided to buy it for myself. All this author's books are a great help identifying and learning about the plants in my region.

I found this book informative and well written. Good books on native trees, shrubs, and vines are hard to find, and I am happy to have this reference in my gardening library. It offers excellent cultural advice. I highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this book. It brought to life so many issues that I dealt with i my childhood and helped me work thru how I can be a better father. Very well written and a pleasure to read

Good book if you are raising kids, especially if you're in an upper middle class or rich community. I read the book, my husband saw Dr. Levine give a lecture. He thought it was 100% worth the time and money. My book club found this a good read.

The Price of Privilege is one of the better books I've read in quite some time. I found it insightful, approachable, and practical.While the majority of the book is about the psychological challenges kids from affluent homes are experiencing, I would recommend this book to any parent. The book also indirectly points out challenges facing our world and society, which I found refreshing. While we, to a large extent, live in a capitalist world, there are many dangers to becoming a materialistic society. Madeline does a nice job acknowledging the dangers and offering a perspective that is workable within our culture and society.

Good book on dealing with your privileged kids, but it was light on action plans to implement. Maybe there is no solution but it seems to me that privilege basically delays maturation and as parents we can't let them fall behind their peers in this respect.

Her style of writing is very clear and feels like she is approachable, yet I love that the book is told from both her research and experiences. I found traces of myself and my family members in every chapter. She reminds us what we need to focus on as parents or, in my case, as a teacher. This book also warns against the culture of affluence. It identifies key warning signs and threats that could affect your family. I'd consider this book a worthwhile read.

I read this book 6 years ago when my daughter was in high school. I wish I had read it even earlier. For obsessive-compulsive helicopter parents (who are this way because they want to do everything they can for their child) like I was, and find that this doesn't seem to cause anything but conflict with your child, it is mandatory reading. Stepping back and allowing your child to make mistakes and learn from them by themselves empowers them to be capable adults. Not to mention happier people. You can start a whole new relationship with your child, but this is a process that takes time.
