I have been practicing the Craft, solitarily and per Coven, for 51 years, in Scotland, UK, and in the USA. I have always felt a "tiny" barrier when with larger groups due to my being a gay male--which I never discussed with anyone, as I didn't really feel it was necessary. I am now practicing solitarily--this book almost brought tears of joy to my eyes when I started reading it. Every time the word "you" was written in the text of the book, it was as though it was mentioning me by name. Not only is this a great, very well written book, it focuses on the things that are important to me and my partner of 23 years. This book isn't strictly for solitary practitioners, as it can be geared to coven practice. I will be using this book in my library of teaching materials. I place it with my other great Craft authors, ie Marian Green, Gemma Gary, Michael Howard, and many of the older British authors, whom we respect and love. The book also discusses performing the regular rituals with all male (or all female) participants, ie moon rituals, etc. I give greatest thanks to the author, Christopher Penczak, for writing this book for "ME".....Bright Blessings now and forever. I am glad to have this book. It is a good introduction to wicca if you already have a background in wicca. I def recommend Cunningham first. What is good about this book though is that 1)it includes a lot of information on gay spirituality in wicca that Cunningham leaves out and 2) it has taken me further through different spiritual practices than Cunningham has

This is the best book I have ever read on Wicca and the key to unlocking this spirituality for me. I have been interested in Wicca and paganism for a long time and just sort of dabbled, but never got too involved. I even had pagan friends and went to pagan events, which were beautiful, but I could never seem to find my own connection. Most of the books I would pick up on paganism just didn't speak to me or seem too interesting, even though I felt Wicca to be closest to my own spiritual nature. I tried Dragon wicca and gothic wicca, and both left me cold. After moving to the Northwest last year, I discovered New Witch magazine at a local bookstore, which I think is a great publication! Ads in that magazine led me to this book, Gay Witchcraft. Christopher Penczak writes in a way that is very enjoyable and conversational as if he is sitting there speaking with you. He takes you through witchcraft in an enjoyable, step by step manner that brings everything together and gradually makes sense as part of the whole. I had always had a bit of misgiving about witchcraft because I had trouble believing there were zillions of deities just out there floating around in the sky somewhere. Now that I've been reading this book, I understand that isn't really what witches believe and have a clear understanding of how it all works. A good friend of mine who is pagan said I would know my path when I found a book that not only "clicked" with me, but that it should cover things like working with energy, grounding oneself, etc. This is the basis for the first part of the book, learning how to work with energy and get oneself in the right energetic state before even attempting to work on more complex things like spells. No wonder so many people are turned off by witchcraft, most books make it sound like you can just light a candle, mumble a few words and your spell will come true. That isn't the case, it takes a lot of focus, energy and hard work, like most things. Although this book is written for gay practitioners and creates a great comfort level for us, I believe it would be a useful book for anyone getting into wicca and wanting to know how it all works and how to put it together. I don't know if it's coincidence, but since I've been working with this book, a lot of things in my life are starting to go the way I want them to. Even things I never thought would happen are happening. And I definitely, finally feel connected to something spiritual, which is giving me newfound inner strength and confidence, I even quit smoking! Thank you, Christopher, thank you, thank you, blessed be!

This is basically a witchcraft/Wicca 101 book with the word gay in the title. If you've read any of the 101 books on the market you've already read this one, in fact this is not one of the most informative or well-written ones out there. As someone who's really into Penczak's stuff it was disappointing, not one of his best for sure.

Excellent and highly recommended. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, as it gives gay men guidance in approaching the world of witchcraft, which from the outside can seem at times very heterosexual and even hostile towards homosexuality. Christopher Penczak is a gifted writer, and he has a very easy to understand writing style. Reading this book has helped me enormously on my personal journey. I would recommend this to any gay man interested in witchcraft or Wicca.

I came to this book useing the search words : Wheel of life. Not being gay or wanting to practice Witchcraft I took a chance on this book. It is informative and written with care. Some of the photos felt a little cold but I would recommmend the book. I have always drawn to Nature and haven't felt at home in Church so I connected to this material. It is important that gays,lesbians,bis. and transgender people teach their stories.

I love the photography in "Then and Now" books, and I own editions for several cities (NYC, Philly, DC, etc). However, the Detroit book has an illusory feel that borders on being dishonest.In short:1) No auto factory pictures! This would be like a book about NYC with no Times Square pictures, or a book about DC with no pictures of the Capitol or White House.2) You have to wade 42 pages into the book before you find a pair of pictures where the 'old' view even resembles the newer (~2001) view. This was due to ignoring Detroit's industrial past, and the hulking ruins that are now all over the city.3) Some pictures are just plain insignificant to the city's history, like the "Pewabic Pottery Company" and a water fountain on Belle Island.4) Several of Detroit's largest skyscrapers, which are now derelict boarded up ruins, are largely ignored in the book.One of the very few pages where the author admits a 'failing' of Detroit is a pair of pictures of the Michigan Central Depot rail station. There are dozens of other large Detroit buildings, in a state of disrepair just like rail station, either omitted from this book or presented misleadingly. For example, the 'Now' view of the Cass Technical School looks attractive in this book, but the building turned into dangerous monstrosity (of trash, broken windows, and gang graffiti) just a few years after being closed. Other picture books about Detroit present an accurate view of the Cass.I can't help but wonder why the author of this book was trying to go out of her way to present Detroit in such an optimistic light. If illusion is your cup of tea, then fine, you will enjoy this book. If visual accuracy matters to you, then you will be disappointed.

Excellent contrast between what Detroit used to look like and what it looks like today. The Renaissance Center development is especially stunning. The Comerica Building is also very impressive. Detroit needs to continue revitalizing old abandoned industrial sites. Overall, an excellent book that I recommend.

The old photos are really great, and the historical descriptions are informative. My beef with this book is twofold...it's almost entirely downtown and midtown focused, practically ignoring the other 80% of the city. Secondly, if I didn't know any better, I would assume this book was put out by the Detroit Chamber of Commerce. One would think it would be impossible to whitewash the decline of Detroit in a Then & Now book, but this manages to pull it off. No Chene, no Gratiot, no McNichols, no Livernois.. The few photos in which the now has drastically changed from the then, most are downtown photos that would fit in nicely in an official Detroit promotional brochure (with the rare exceptions being the Michigan Theater parking garage, the graffiti covered Packard plant, and the Michigan Central station). The description of the abandoned station, mid way through the book, mentions the "so-called decay of Detroit", which is a head-shaking statement...does Ms Gay think the reader is stupid? At that point I realized the book was part propaganda from a Detroit native who wished to show 2015 Detroit in the best possible light, and I enjoyed the rest of it with that in mind. Any reader of this book should do likewise. I attached some Then & Now pics that would have made this book a bit more interesting...and realistic.

Its a shame the city has let so many great structures and monuments go to waste. Detroit was a spectacular thriving city long ago. Great writing, interesing subject choices, but there were about 3 photos were the angel of the shot could of been much much better. Almost amatuerish. Should have included more interioir shots. The city wasn't always showed at it's best , I think due to the camera angles or simply waiting ff a better shot.IITs a super cool book to actually compare how things looked before and now. Worth buying!

At least to me the first part of this book got off to a slow start with a lot of detailed information regarding the shipbuilders, shipowners, sailors, and even the passengers on the ship. I expected some detail, but not as much as the book included. I did find it interesting that several dozen miners from Cornwall, England, were on the ship headed to the Quincy Mine in Copper Country in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where I live. They all perished in the ship's sinking.My interest in the book picked up considerably from the time the ship hit the iceberg, the chaos that followed in getting passengers to leave the ship into a lifeboat, the subsequent arrival in New York, and what became of some of the survivors. I found it interesting that the ship may very well have survived had it not swerved to hit the iceberg. Chances of its survival would have been much better had it hit the iceberg head on. In addition the ship's speed was too fast in these dangerous waters. Perhaps those involved want to impress how quickly they could cross the Atlantic.Chaos reigned in getting passengers to disembark from the ship with passengers being told there was no great danger to avoid panic. Initially lifeboats were cast into the water only half full. The ship's captain, Bruce Ismay, has often been criticized for going into a lifeboat at the end saying he should have "gone down with the ship." He wasn't taking anyone's place in a boat. It would only have been an additional needless waste of life. A great deal of consternation took place in New York regarding the many rumors of the ship's fate or who was among the survivors.Interestingly, several survivors of the disaster committed suicide in the coming years. Whether the reason dealt with guilt for having been among the survivors or not we really don't know. Regardless of what you may have already read about the sinking of the Titanic I think this book will provide you with interesting details you may not already be aware of. Eventually the iceberg that sunk this monstrous ship melted to a size that would not have been able to sink a canoe.

My great-granddaughter just went on a trip to the museum about Titanic. She had really gotten interested in the different types of people that were on the ship. This book helped me understand how these people reacted. It covered those who designed the ship and built it and the different classes of passengers and how they were treated on the ship. There was a huge difference as to how they were treated. I hated that some of the men on the ship kept the younger boys from getting into the life boats especially when they were not even filled. Now I see why the laws require ships to practice with the passengers and sailors how to board the life rafts. Many more could have been saved.

I enjoyed reading this book very much. It was so interesting in its details about the people, the ship, the sinking, the recovery of lifeboat survivors and bodies and the aftermath. New nuances in the various stupidities that contributed to the disaster were added to my knowledge of the many others. Fabulous research into the survivors' stories and those that did not survive. Especially sad were the tales of some of the young boys and teens that chose to stay behind or were not allowed into the lifeboats. Lastly, the many early deaths, some on the anniversary date of the sinking, as well as suicides, mental disintegration and guilt of the survivors was especially interesting. A great book to add to one's Titanic reading.

This is one of the most interesting books I have read on not only the Titanic, but on any subject. The research was amazing. The writing style I find enjoyable. The author does use some "big" words, but come on now, we're not in first grade anymore, so there should be no problem in understanding. The writing flows at a nice even pace and the author does a good job of describing most of the characters, some others, not so much. All in all this was a good buy. I actually did have to pay for it, but it's worth every penny.

Short, sweet and direct to the point and covered the topics we all wondered about. If you're looking to get into writing short romance as a side pen name or as a full-time name this little book is a great tool. Pointed me in the right direction on several topics such as keywords, book length and publishing schedule.

I really did read this book for anyone who cares... :) This book is short, sweet and gives it to you in steps of 1,2,3. Can't get any simpler than that. Not a long drawn out book I read it from front to back in about 30 minutes, but it has a lot of really great information in it including the steps to start writing, which for me seems to be the hardest part.Thank you, Hope, for sharing all this information I will use it wisely and often.

I have a difficult time taking writing advice from this author - she definitely needs to take a basic English grammar course, and she needs to learn how to self-edit. The book itself is very short, and you can find the information just by doing a simple Google search. This book would be better if the author included a few chapters on romance short stories - such romance tropes and simple plotting.

This short book was very helpful, & gives insight in viewing how Hope Ford got started with writing & selling her books. Since reading my first Hope Ford short story, I have been so entranced with Hope Ford's writing style. I have bought every book so far, & I just have not been able to put my kindle down. Love her work!

It's a short and handy book with some tips and tricks (basic ones, not really going into any depth). I liked it, though I would have appreciated a little more in-depth advice, and maybe another read-through by the author for editing reasons.

FIrst book that I’ve read on this topic. Short but very informative —- which I really liked. Talked about things I would have never even considered.

You won't be wasting your time reading about the author's bio, childhood and other irrelevant stuff in this book.It's inspiring, short and to the point.It's like getting the author on a Skype chat, asking her questions, getting her replies. How did you do it? How did you choose the genre? Where do you find your ideas? Hope Ford answers all those questions and more in this book.Surely, I spotted a few misspellings and grammatical errors. But do I care? No, because to me the most important issue is to learn. Not to read perfect prose.Also, I would have loved to see example outlines for her short stories. What structure does she use if any?But the book is a good read if you need a push to get started and if you want to read how a fellow author succeeded without being perfect. Her covers are homemade and she self-edit her books.This book shows how simple it is, and we just need to do it now.

It’s a must read for people like me who’ve had our hearts broken, and then those hearts never seems to mind. I’m still aching over the loss of my dad and my birth family. I’ve studied meditation with differing results. This book proved a how-to book on how to heal. Chapters were not intended to be how-to chapters, but that’s what many of them were for me. Most of us can’t drop everything and rush to an apartment in Rome and then to a retreat in India and then to Bali. But we can learn yoga and meditation anywhere. We can order pizza and make new friends. If you aren’t hurting and you don’t need the guide to meditation and self discovery, it’s still a great book. The collection of 108 personal essays are fascinating with lots of fresh insights into the human psych and the types of characters that one usually finds only in a novel. There’s Richard the Texan who nicknames Gilbert, “Groceries; there’s the plumber who takes her to the highest spot at the Indian retreat, there’s Ketut the medicine man who is somewhere between 65 and 112 years old and Wayan the medicine woman searching for a home. It’s hard not to fall in love with these characters. Gilbert gains weight in Italy, self awareness in India and self confidence in Bali, Indonesia. And she finds love. Some chapters are too pat. She discovers the four brothers who are sort of guardian angels we all have. On her way home that day, a monkey threatens her, but she is feisty, and she stand up to the creature. After all she’s got four tough brothers protecting her. Too pat. The chapter was contrived. The reader is so busy rooting for her that he forgets his own troubles - except to put the book down for awhile to eat, pray, meditate and fall in love. That’s a lot to get from one book.

I wish I had read a sample before I bought the book. I didn't get past the 3rd chapter. It starts off with how she sobs at night because she wants a divorce. And then on to her husband being mad because she wants a divorce - and then he's still mad when she moves in with a guy. Well duh. Not for me.

i loved her book "The Signature of All Things". This is more of an autobiography about a needy, self centered person

Whiny, preachy, political claptrap written by a neurotic spoiled brat. Save your money. Don't buy this crap. If there were a way to give this a minus hundred, I would.

This is, by far, my all time favorite book. It meant, and still means, so much to me, especially as a woman. I was a single mother for most of my now adult daughter's life, and I was so desperately sad and lonely after my divorce with my husband/her stepdad (Our wedding, which was obviously well pre-planned, ended up being on the day of Princess Diana's funeral (9/6/1997) and our divorce was finalized on 9/11/2001 (yep, THE day)...There's my "sign"... Anyway, several years passed and I still just couldn't see a future....of anything, happiness, travel, love, ???...(other than going through the motions and working on being the best mother I could be)...I too, was 36 years old at this time. When my daughter was old enough to have a stable relationship with her biological father, I would have every other weekend alone. I used to go to the bookstore "Borders" every Friday night and I would walk aimlessly around the entire store, just looking for any sign, the next sign for the next move, for me... I prayed and prayed constantly, just not knowing what or where I needed to be... with my physical life, my spiritual life, my love life, my motherhood... and then I looked up. On the top shelf of the "newest releases" I saw the cover of "Eat, Pray, Love"... I INSTANTLY felt a "pull" if you will... Now normally, I would wander, grab a few books, & find a chair hidden in some lonely, quiet little alcove in the store, and sort through the items I'd selected to see if anything could help or just give me SOMETHING, ANYTHING for HOPE...but I grabbed this book from the shelf, read the back cover, ran to the checkout line and left the store to go home. Within reading the first chapter, I immediately found it gravitational, humorous, very easy to follow and read.... very spiritual, and somehow, someway, emotionally compatible and conducive to exactly what I was needing at the time. You instantly understand where Elizabeth Gilbert is coming from, what she's going through, and even her "fantasies", all with humor, compassion and a desire to continue "the journey with her". I was hooked. Every chapter, I was laughing, crying, dreaming, planning, petitioning, praying, and laughing again. Every chapter held me captive in all of my senses. You can feel everything she feels, you can taste everything she tastes (even her tears), you can see what she sees, you pray what she prays, her friends (and enemies) become yours, and you get to the end, and you're a different person. It's like the book emanates and "energy" right to you and through you, and you are left feeling HOPEFUL, alive, ready, stronger, wiser, more forgiving of others, and most importantly, yourself. You learn that they way you lean into and love God is between the two of you and no one else....that what you can't necessarily see, hear or touch, doesn't mean it isn't FULLY there, fully present with you, in all It's Glory. I've read it 7 times, all on different occasions and throughout different phases in my life...After months of reading it, when the next Christmas Season rolled around, I bought 13 copies and gave them to all of the closest women in my life. I'm now only a few months shy of age 48 (years young) and I'll read this book again and again...every time I read it I learn something new about the world, others, and myself...all through this amazing woman's courage to take a chance on simply sharing all of herself for one, amazing, adventurous, incredible year... what a gift. You'll never look at Italy, India, and Indonesia, with all of it's bounty, glory, and gods, the same again. I'm forever grateful and HIGHLY recommend this book. Oh! And 1 year ago (after 2 years of dating) I got the courage to say "Yes!" to the man of my dreams. :)

I really liked this book. I read it when I was going through a tough time and it just sort of motivated me to enjoy life, to just get out there and do something that lets me breathe and relax. A lot of people complain and criticize that she was rich and could just -do- these trips, but I liked it. For me, I just drove to a new city and watched the sun set on the ocean. It motivated me to make my own trip and enjoy life and I liked that. She just felt so real with life and I related to her and her love of food.
