For sixteen years I’ve worked at Scott Carpenter Middle School in Denver helping students learn and grow and have adventures they may not have. When I was told Sylvia Acevedo was going to be doing a tour of local schools for her book, I knew we’d have to bring her to our school. You see, Scott Carpenter was an astronaut and much of our school is space themed. Many of my students come from similar backgrounds as Ms. Acevedo and don’t believe they can choose where life takes them by setting goals and working hard to achieve them. The power of community is mentioned more than once in this book and it is so true. If we can find one good community to help us grow and become better humans than we will have succeeded. “Planning ahead and doing things properly can help you get what you want.†So many times my students look for the quick and the easy, but things take time and hard work to gain long term rewards.I find it amazing she drew strength from Clara Barton, Eleanor Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart and Helen Keller just to name a few. Our Girl Scout troop wanted to inspire other girls to show them they could be super heroes. The girls planned a camp and welcome juniors to learn how they could be a hero in their community. Little did we know we picked these same women to teach other girls how powerful women could be as leaders, and as gangs agents. Here’s hoping in many years we will also count Sylvia Acevedo among this amazing group of super heroes :-)
Purchased this book for myself, but it will be a book I gift to many, kids and adults alike about go after your dreams full on. Way to break the barriers, as a woman and in society's view of what Girl Scouts do. Girl Scouts is SO MUCH more than crafts, as Silvia illustrates in her book. She would not have pursued her dreams without the confidence and courage that Girl Scouts gave to her. She truly is a woman of character, confidence and courage.
The author is a close friend of mine. The story is so true, so close to who Sylvia Acevedo is in her person. It was delightful to follow the determination and persistent from a naïve young girls to the determined, persistent and experienced adult who still says I can do it. I'm passing the book on for others to read and recommending it to some friends who still have young daughters.
Inspirational but not well written or engaging.
When I was involved in scouting, I noticed that it attracted kids who had learning disabilities because the step by step approach for achievement badges helped them to focus and succeed. Sylvia Acevedo shows how the step by step method helped her make the bridge to Anglo culture, organize her home so that it worked, learn things beyond her family' s expectations and to succeed beyond her wildest dreams. Sylvia grew up in a Mexican-American home in New Mexico, once lived in a Spanish-speaking section of Las Cruces but her mother, who only spoke Spanish, insisted on sending her to learn English lessons before she started school and enrolled her in Head StartAfter her sister got meningitis, with mentally crippling results, her mother insisted on moving to the other side of Las Cruces where they were the only Mexican-Americans and where Sylvia had trouble making friends. She soon proved herself academically but didn't know how to interact with her new peers. One day an acquaintance invited her to a Brownie Scouts meeting where even steps like properly handing off a pair of scissors while making a practical sit-upon was important enough to learn correctly.Sylvia devoured the scout manual, joined a friendly group of scouts and learned things like budgeting so the troops could go camping by earning the money to cover costs through cookie sales, The scouts even had instructions for how to make a sale, not leaving until there were 3 "no"s or a sale. She turned her new skills at organizing to the family car, which had broken down on a long trip for want of an oil change. No one had read the English maintenance instructions, so at 13, she joined a class on how to make car repairs. She learned to set up the maintenance schedule and follow it. It helped that Sylvia had a love of numbers and enough rivalry with her older brother to insist she could do things girls were not expected to try. She trained at ball, at music, even carrying around weights while she ran all summer to be allowed to carry the heavy tympani drums in band. Although she had dreamed of Stanford since 4th grade, she found a degree program in engineering, complete with internships in New Mexico, but had to fight to get in as the only woman. She looked for scholarships at Stanford for grad school, not knowing they were called "fellowships". and was offered one. She became a rocket scientist and later national chairman of the Girl Scouts.Sylvia's mother improved her English by assisting at scout functions and later became the leader of a Girl Scout group for special needs children like Sylvia's sister Laura. So all three benefitted.People often underestimate the gap between retained knowledge from the "correct" background and success. And they underestimate the ability of those without that privilege have to overcome it. By finding a way to learn what these requirements are, a step by step method to learn them and a supportive group to cheer them on, most children can succeed. At the very least, public libraries, Head Start programs, tutoring and groups like the scouts that instill values and skills are necessary
I was lucky enough to see Ms. Acevedo at our local library - she is a delightful person with a wonderful story! I bought a copy of her book for my young daughter who has an aero degree and volunteers with the Girl Scouts. Since the memoir is written for about 4th grade+ reading level, I finished reading it in no time. It is a personable, well-written story that covers a lot of ground. Little Sylvia feels alone when her family moves away from their home on a dirt road in a Hispanic area to a mostly Anglo area. When a classmate asks her to go to a Brownie scout meeting, she finds acceptance and support and a wide world of opportunities. I loved how the troop leaders also helped Sylvia's mother bloom. Syvia has to deal with poverty, home troubles, and traditional cultural expectations for Hispanic women, but with the practical life skills learned from scouting and the encouragement of her mother, teachers, and scout leaders she becomes ready to blast off to her dreams. I especially loved the last few chapters of how she goes to college and works at jobs where she is the only woman. This book is important for girls, but boys can learn and be inspired from it, too. This is a remarkable story for anyone.
