IThis is the 2nd volume in Martha Wells’ “Murderbot Diaries”. It’s also the 2nd of my May New Releases – the first being “The Wolf: Under The Northern Sky” – which turned out to be a beautiful and thoroughly enjoyable book.I enjoyed “All Systems Red” – enough to convince me to buy the three sequels. The next book – “Rogue Protocol” – is scheduled for release in August of this year. Contrary to what I wrote in the first review, I did actually did buy all volumes in hardcover. Given what I know Wells is capable of – I guess I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt and just assume that she’s going to do something special with this story.After reading this second book, I have to say…Murderbot is growing on me. I was right about the holes in “All Systems Red” – Wells is parsing out her backstory and is filling in the blanks as she goes. MB is becoming a more substantial and relate-able character as the story progresses. He’s growing and defining himself – starting to come to terms with his independence and deciding who he wants to be. Most of that growth is driven by his need to interact with a growing group of diverse individuals and the choices those interactions force on him. He obligates himself to a new group of humans – first via a contract he negotiates and then in response to a series of ethical choices that result from that contractual obligation. Those choices allow you to better understand MB, how he thinks about himself and how he feels about the humans who created him.Just as important are the relationships he forms with other machine intelligences. The first and most entertaining of these is the alliance or friendship or something in between that he forms with the Artificial Intelligence – ART – responsible for the operation of a Research Transport vessel that he uses to escape from the world of his first set of human patrons. ART is a surprise for MB – he’d assumed that this would be an uncommunicative machine intelligence. In fact, ART turns out to be as communicative and as richly complex as MB and their relationship transitions from arms length wary to mutually supportive and amusingly familiar. ART is arrogantly confident in his superior abilities but humanizes as a result of his interactions with MB. As the story progresses, they become an effective, entertaining, almost lovable team united partially by the boredom of their constrained lives in service to human beings that are – in many ways – far less capable than either of them.Long to short – this story is becoming increasingly interesting and entertaining. I actually enjoyed “Artificial Condition” more than I did “All Systems Red”. It was richer, more complex and it finally allowed me to connect in a more meaningful way to MB. I can’t help but think that I’m going to really wind up liking this guy as the story progresses.I honestly have only one complaint and it has nothing to do with the book itself. I don’t like the way Martha Wells and the publisher are commercializing the work – hence the Razor / Blades quote. The story is being sold as 4 separate novellas:All Systems Red – 2017Artificial Condition – May 2018Rogue Protocol – August 2018Exit Strategy – October 2018They’re sold separately as hardcovers at the price of $16.19 and as e-copies for $9.99. In reality, these are 4 sections of one book – obvious as you read through each separately – and could easily have been published in one volume. The fact that they were all released within an 18 month period only confirms that the Author and the publisher made a pretty crass commercial decision to break the book into four pieces and sell them separately to maximize revenue.Instead of paying $25 for a single hardcover volume, I’m forced to purchase 4 separate novellas for a combined cost of ~$68.00 in hardcover or ~$40.00 in digital format. Before you say it, I will – shame on me – no one forced me to spend the money – I know I’m being played. Nevertheless, I’m really enjoying the books and I want to get my hands on them as they become available. It just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth and it makes me wonder about Wells’ attitude towards her fans and readers. Wells and her publisher gave me the Razor but she’s selling me the blades – one at a time – at a pretty high price.My recommendation – wait until an omnibus edition is published and just read it straight through. You’ll enjoy the story AND you won’t feel like you’re being exploited. I wish I was able to take my own advice. 🙁

This story is way too short for the price. I want to read the next one but I certainly am not going to shell out $10 for a novella.

Like so many others, I fell for the first Murderbot book and gleefully awaited the series' return. What a disappointment. This novella reads like a mere chapter in a longer book. The plot is paper-thin, the characters cardboard cutouts, and the writing is serviceable at best. At worst, the prose is hugely repetitive and bland. I paid $10 for the Kindle edition of the book and it took me less than two hours to read it. And now the publisher wants me to pay another $20 for the next two installments. I can abide by reading a poorly written book (it's not even a book, really, but a short story) but I hate getting ripped off.

Murderbot continues to be entertaining, though this installment doesn’t cohere as well as the first, and I was under the impression I was getting a novel, not a novella for the price of a full book.

I enjoyed the first Murderbot book, and ordered Artifiial Condition assuming it would be a full length novel. For almost $10 I want more than a few pages. This is a neat little story, and Wells writes well. But come on - I feel ripped off

Charging $30 for a novel by breaking it up into 160 page segments and selling each novella at the price of a novel is ridiculous. I won't be buying the rest of the series. Currently the next two "books" in the series are on pre-order at $9.99 apiece and each at 160 pages.

This is the first time I have ever bothered to review a book, and I'm doing it solely because I am ticked off. I've been a big time Martha Wells fan since Death of the Necromancer. Prior to that, I stopped reading SciFi because most of it was pretty lame, but I became a huge fan and pretty much bought each of her books the day it was available, happily paying full price for the provided enjoyment. Then yesterday afternoon I started reading this book. Murderbot is a bit too traditional SciFi for me, but his quirkiness and the quality writing make up for it. I was getting into the book, having traveled to the coffee shop and settled into my favorite big squishy chair, when BAM!, the book ended? My initial thought was my Kindle was acting up, but no, this is a really short book. That's fine for $3.99, but for the ten bucks I paid I feel my loyalty has been taken advantage of. Now, I'll probably continue the series because I have a ton of love an respect for the author, but I do feel a bit betrayed. I'm retired and read like a fiend, so I need to get decent value. If this is the "new thing", then I'll probably have to find a new favorite author to love and respect.

This was a very good exposition on the minor prophets. These books should be known more as the "brief" prophets. Their message was by no means minor. The author calls them the "clean pages" of the Bible, that is, the pages that are seldom read. We used it in our men's group Bible study. God's message through the minor prophets is pretty consistent throughout. A Major Point for each Bible book was helpful so that we could focus in on a unique message in each book. There is quite a bit in the book to connect the prophecies with our current situation. Sometimes, however, the author went on trails that took us a bit too far outside the message of the prophets. There is a tough balance between audience engagement and focus. One other suggestion: He quoted others quite a bit. I would have liked to have citations so that those who were interested could study them further. Another thing I'd suggest for the Kindle edition: Please put page numbers that line up with one of the print editions. That is a common problem with most Kindle books that are used in a study situation.

Great material that is easy to follow yet thoroughly researched and scholarly in content.Easy to copy key passages for reference notes or for teaching/speaking notes.

This book met all of my expectation I am using it to teach my class. My students have order this as well.

Blanchard has done it again. This book has helped me immensely in my bible study planning on the minor prophets. His points are clear and understandable. The book printing is a nice size and the text does not cause me eye to strain. Its an easy book to carry around with plenty of margins to write in notes.

I HAVE BEEN FEELING THE URGE TO STUDY THE MINOR PROPHETS (minor in book size not in relationship with God) . THIS BOOK HAS BEEN A GREAT TOOL IN MY STUDY, WELL WRITTEN, MADE ME WANT TO CONTINUE MY MINOR PROPHETS STUDY.

This book does very little in the way of giving information, background, exegetical study, etc. It reads more like a topical sermon where the preacher bases a message in a text from the Minor Prophets then directly launches into the topic without really dealing with a text. this is an easy read and a good read but not the book for you if you're looking to really learn about the Minor Prophets.

Peter Ubel's book on medical decisions is a wonderful exploration of the issues (and problems) that arise in making decisions about medical treatment. The book is easy to read and engaging, and it addresses topics that we will all need to face sooner or later. We will all have to interact with doctors as we gather information and make important decisions about what sort of medical treatment we want for ourselves and those we love. I think I will approach those decisions better now that I've read Ubel's book.As other reviewers have noted, the point of departure for the book is our current state-of-the-world, where the patient empowerment movement has given us control over medical choices but where we patients still don't have the education and information needed to make those choices intelligently. Ubel explores the history of how we got here, with lots of interesting stories, and he works through how we can get the help we need--from physicians and from technical decision aids--to exercise intelligent control over our treatment options.The book is a fun read, too! Ubel's use of stories and his occasional jokes about even the most serious topics keep you going strong through chapters on things we need to think about, but don't always want to think about. (In a chapter about end-of-life care and decisions to let people cease treatment, he mentions that primary care physicians sometimes tell the joke: "Why do coffins have nails? To keep out the oncologists!")I read the book straight through and then gave it to a friend who is facing some difficult treatment choices for his child. If that's not a recommendation, I don't know what is.

As a fellow researcher in the psychology of medical decision making, I've had the pleasure of following Dr. Ubel's innovative work for years. In Critical Decisions, he applies his notable skills as a physician, a bioethicist, and a behavior scientist to explain how patients and physicians can find themselves stymied by the need to work together to make medical decisions and how patients, in particular, can make better decisions.The book begins with a historical account of the emergence of "patient autonomy" in medical decision making as a moral and legal paradigm, and shows why putting medical decisions solely on the patient, although perhaps a necessary counterweight to centuries of physician paternalism, is also highly problematic, particularly in light of the psychology of decision making which challenges the assumption that simply informing patients is sufficient to enable them to make better decisions. Ubel traces the much more recent ascent of "shared decision making", including the development of patient decision aids, and points out the need for improvements in both patient and physician communication. As patients being more active, he points out, physicians need to be better prepared for active patients. He concludes with eight tips for patients to better partner with their doctors.Ubel has a real flair for explain complex ideas - medical, legal, economic, or psychological - in straightforward and readable language. He makes effective use of his own experiences with patients (and as a patient) to showcase the kinds of issues that arise in shared decision making and point a way forward.Because I know Ubel's work well, I know there are fascinating and important studies that didn't make it into this book. For example, he points out that people without a colostomy assume that living with a colostomy will be worse than it is (according to people who have a colostomy), but he doesn't cover his later study that shows that even people who have formerly had a colostomy (since reversed) also misremember what it was like and return to assuming that a new colostomy would be worse than their past experience would suggest. Of course, collecting all of Ubel's findings would take several additional volumes, so it's not much of a fault. Interesting and fast read. Amusing and revealing anecdotes. Perhaps there isn't much of a solution. The end of the book leaves a feeling of wishy-washiness without any concrete solutions to take away. Thus one star taken away because in the end, this feels more like a collection of anecdotes rather than a "study" of the problem.

Every one should read this book. It is amazing how many doctors don't want patients to be part of the decision making process. All patients and family members need to insist on being involved in making decisions.

As a medical student, I have seen both patients and physicians struggle to navigate the complex world of medical decision making.Dr. Peter Ubel's book is written in a friendly, conversational manner that makes it easy and enjoyable to read (even for a busy medical student, which is saying something!). He is able to combine his experience as a clinical physician, family member of a cancer survivor, and pre-eminent researcher into a unique perspective that differs from everything else on the market.I know from experience that most healthcare professionals (myself included) initially chose to work in the medical field because we truly wanted to help people. Unfortunately, if we don't educate ourselves about the paradigm of shared decision making we end up hurting the very patients we intended to help. I can't imagine graduating from medical school without reading this book.Critical Decisions is also a must-read for anyone who visits the doctor. I know what I'm getting my family members for Christmas this year! They'll thank me the next time they find themselves in a tricky or confusing conversation at the doctor's office!Thank you to Dr. Ubel for taking the time to write this book!

Nourishing Traditions is primarily a cookbook that includes introductory and contextual information about traditional diets. While Nourishing Diets includes many recipes that aren't in Nourishing Traditions, I wouldn't characterize it as a cookbook. The recipe section is about 40 pages long and includes recipes for grains, soups and stews, nutrient-dense snacks, organ meats, cooking with blood, seafood, vegetables, fermented condiments, and desserts I am excited to try. It comes after almost 200 pages of detailed information on ancestral diets.  We learn about the nourishing diets of the Australian Aborigines: The Most Paleo of Them All, Native Americans: Guts and Grease, The Far North: Seal Oil and Whale Blubber, The South Seas: Abundance and Beauty, Africa: The Land of Fermented Foods, Asia: Variety and Monotony,  Europe: The Foods We Like to Eat. In addition Sally writes about "True Blue Zones: How Long- Lived People Really Eat", and "What to Eat? Translating the Wisdom of Our Ancestors into a Healthy Modern Diet". Nourishing Diets does include highlights of Dr. Weston A. Price's research, yet it expands far beyond it with a wide variety of references and geographic areas.For those of us who have a keen interest in how people nourished themselves historically, I highly recommend this book as an incredibly well-researched companion to Nourishing Traditions.  Having said that, I want to clarify that having the book Nourishing Traditions is not necessary to read and understand Nourishing Diets. My point is for all of us who already have Nourishing Traditions, this new book is different enough that I think it is a very worthwhile read. I found it to be very well-written and quite fascinating! Even though I have read a fair amount on this subject, I learned a lot more! We will read the book as a community in our Nourished Book Club on Facebook now that it has been released!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and learned so much about the ancestral cultures. I am a student of history, genealogy is my hobby and I'm a devotee to cooking. To put all of my favorite things in one easy to read book is delightful. I am on my second read of the book because I want to make sure I pick up all the details. This book will be extremely helpful for someone eating in the Ancestral Way. Fad diets come and go but the old ways endure among those willing to seek them out.

I love history and really enjoyed reading about the traditional foods and their preparation of cultures from around the world. This book is full of interesting information, but is very easy to read and understand (not technical). Sally also includes a lot of interesting footnotes throughout the book to further explain various parts. It's also clear the author has a sense of humor. There were a number of times I laughed out loud reading this. The book is mostly information about the cultures, divided into a separate chapter for each. At the end of the book, it summarizes how to apply this knowledge in our own lives and includes recipes. She also references a number of books throughout and has a very long bibliography of books I will probably be looking up in the future. One author I was happy to see a mention of in the chapter on the American Indians is Charles C. Mann. I have read his 1491 book (here on Amazon; a fantastic book) on what the Americas were really like before Columbus. It's very eye-opening, and I wish the information was known by the masses. I was very happy to see that Sally included his information rather than just going with the "mainstream" fake knowledge that the Indians were all tree-hugging hippies living in the midst of thousands of miles of virgin wilderness.This book is mostly information, not solely a cookbook. If you want more information about traditional diets, read Weston A. Price's book, Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. And if you want more recipes, check out Sally's books about broth or Nourishing Traditions.

I found Sally Morell's NOURISHING DIETS fascinating. As CEO of the National Billiard Academy, diet is extremely important for athletes, so I read much about diets. This book takes all the guess work out of what we should be eating because Sally has done incredible research. It's also an easy read if you like history and learning about people's all over the world and then learning that there is a common denominator to all the diets - fat. Thank you Sally for another great book.

It was well written and ultra fascinating. The thing that stands out to me and resonates is the variety of foods all these different cultures ate. Yet, I consistently read from mainstream media how we once used to eat mostly plant-based foods. All these wild and interesting foods they ate are nothing I've ever heard before, but whole-heartedly believe it. They had to eat from the land and ate what was available. Surely, lots of plants, but not primarily as mainstream media would have us believe. I love Sally's books. I own every single one and frequently refer to them. Thank you very much for educating me.

This well written book on traditional diets around the globe is an enjoyable, informative read. The book is thoroughly researched. Not some low fat hype about what various countries supposedly ate, but footnoted evidence as ti what they really ate.

I've been using Nourishing Traditions original book for many years. This was an interesting background book, although not quite the necessity that Nourishing Traditions is.

First and foremost, I recommend reading through the Tobacconist University website entirely before you consider purchasing the book. The TU Handbook provides a slightly different experience than the company's website, but will not be necessary for most readers. It is nice to have a hard copy of a book so you can highlight, annotate, etc. However, aside from that, there's no real benefit to shelling out for the book. Information is the same, with only some changes in phrasing.As far as content is concerned, the TU Handbook is an acceptable introduction for consumers, but should not be the main source of learning for a retail, sales, or master tobacconist. The largest section, which I still found a bit anemic, is dedicated to cigar tobacco.The pipe section is severely lacking, much of the book's content seems a little subjective, and it hasn't been updated since 2009. Most people will learn more by joining an online forum or spending some time at their local cigar shop.My greatest issue was the editorialized stance that TU takes on the benefits of cigars, as well as the common hatred of tobacco products. The industry would be better off with a stiff upper lip, instead of quivering and complaining.All in all, you would be better served by purchasing a copy of the Ultimate Cigar Book, or simply dredging the innumerable internet articles and forums that are available.

I bought this because a friend of mine was taking his test as a employee of a cigar shop and said it had a few interesting facts that even he didn't know. I'm a 35+ year cigar smoker and I keep this in my cigar room to stimulate conversation amongst my friends as we smoke cigars and talk. We each read a bit as we pass it around from chair to chair and it brings up topics & explainations that most cigar smokers don't know. I learned quite a few things from this book myself and those that say it's amateurish are totally off base. Every level of cigar smoker can learn a thing or two from this well written book that is easy to read and is just the thing to impress your cigar buddies with your new found expertise next time you meet up to burn a few! If you are serious about cigars, why not own the handbook that pretty much sums up all the nuts & bolts of growing, selecting the leaves, storing the tobacco, rolling, aging, and smoking cigars?

This book is a great read for the beginner and veteran alike. I recently started smoking cigars about a year ago and was looking to educate myself. This book provides a great foundation for cigar smokers and a tiny bit about pipe tobacco and pipes. This is a very easy read and I had read it cover to cover within a few days of it arriving at my doorstep. It is a good book for reference, a reread, coffee table, and a great gift for those that have a love for Lady Tobacum. If you're looking for a well rounded base for the knowledge of cigars, then buy this book in tandem with "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars - by Tad Gage."Further, if you're looking to be a certified tobacconist (http://www.tobacconistuniversity.org), then this is the suggested handbook for that certification. I've not taken the test(s), but I'd have to imagine that you should have some experience beyond just reading this book. In addition, you may want to read the aforementioned book, and purchase a book that targets pipes and pipe tobaccos.If you're looking for a pipe smoking or pipe tobacco book, this isn't for you if that is your main interest. I'm not versed in pipes or associated tobacco, but it did provide a simple introduction to this world and I did learn things I never knew.

A very costly paper copy of their online tobacco college content (free.) For nearly $50, one would expect clear, color photos and more comprehensive information, especially about pipes and pipe tobacco.

I have been smoking cigars for 64 years. I especially liked the author's discussion about the "flavors " of cigars. On a recent trip to Cuba in March, 2013 we were hosted by an official of one of the world's most famous cigar makers. I asked him about the "flavors" of cigars-hints of coffee, chocolate, citrus, etc. etc. His reply ,"Larry, our cigars taste like tobacco." The book supports that same notion. I now feel no guilt when a good cigar yields me "just tobacco."I plan to take the consumer certification course soon.Thank you for the opportunity to learn more and to make my cigar smoking experience even more enjoyable.Sincerely,Larry M. For sixteen years I’ve worked at Scott Carpenter Middle School in Denver helping students learn and grow and have adventures they may not have. When I was told Sylvia Acevedo was going to be doing a tour of local schools for her book, I knew we’d have to bring her to our school. You see, Scott Carpenter was an astronaut and much of our school is space themed. Many of my students come from similar backgrounds as Ms. Acevedo and don’t believe they can choose where life takes them by setting goals and working hard to achieve them. The power of community is mentioned more than once in this book and it is so true. If we can find one good community to help us grow and become better humans than we will have succeeded. “Planning ahead and doing things properly can help you get what you want.” So many times my students look for the quick and the easy, but things take time and hard work to gain long term rewards.I find it amazing she drew strength from Clara Barton, Eleanor Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart and Helen Keller just to name a few. Our Girl Scout troop wanted to inspire other girls to show them they could be super heroes. The girls planned a camp and welcome juniors to learn how they could be a hero in their community. Little did we know we picked these same women to teach other girls how powerful women could be as leaders, and as gangs agents. Here’s hoping in many years we will also count Sylvia Acevedo among this amazing group of super heroes :-)

Purchased this book for myself, but it will be a book I gift to many, kids and adults alike about go after your dreams full on. Way to break the barriers, as a woman and in society's view of what Girl Scouts do. Girl Scouts is SO MUCH more than crafts, as Silvia illustrates in her book. She would not have pursued her dreams without the confidence and courage that Girl Scouts gave to her. She truly is a woman of character, confidence and courage.

The author is a close friend of mine. The story is so true, so close to who Sylvia Acevedo is in her person. It was delightful to follow the determination and persistent from a naïve young girls to the determined, persistent and experienced adult who still says I can do it. I'm passing the book on for others to read and recommending it to some friends who still have young daughters.

Inspirational but not well written or engaging.

When I was involved in scouting, I noticed that it attracted kids who had learning disabilities because the step by step approach for achievement badges helped them to focus and succeed. Sylvia Acevedo shows how the step by step method helped her make the bridge to Anglo culture, organize her home so that it worked, learn things beyond her family' s expectations and to succeed beyond her wildest dreams. Sylvia grew up in a Mexican-American home in New Mexico, once lived in a Spanish-speaking section of Las Cruces but her mother, who only spoke Spanish, insisted on sending her to learn English lessons before she started school and enrolled her in Head StartAfter her sister got meningitis, with mentally crippling results, her mother insisted on moving to the other side of Las Cruces where they were the only Mexican-Americans and where Sylvia had trouble making friends. She soon proved herself academically but didn't know how to interact with her new peers. One day an acquaintance invited her to a Brownie Scouts meeting where even steps like properly handing off a pair of scissors while making a practical sit-upon was important enough to learn correctly.Sylvia devoured the scout manual, joined a friendly group of scouts and learned things like budgeting so the troops could go camping by earning the money to cover costs through cookie sales, The scouts even had instructions for how to make a sale, not leaving until there were 3 "no"s or a sale. She turned her new skills at organizing to the family car, which had broken down on a long trip for want of an oil change. No one had read the English maintenance instructions, so at 13, she joined a class on how to make car repairs. She learned to set up the maintenance schedule and follow it. It helped that Sylvia had a love of numbers and enough rivalry with her older brother to insist she could do things girls were not expected to try. She trained at ball, at music, even carrying around weights while she ran all summer to be allowed to carry the heavy tympani drums in band. Although she had dreamed of Stanford since 4th grade, she found a degree program in engineering, complete with internships in New Mexico, but had to fight to get in as the only woman. She looked for scholarships at Stanford for grad school, not knowing they were called "fellowships". and was offered one. She became a rocket scientist and later national chairman of the Girl Scouts.Sylvia's mother improved her English by assisting at scout functions and later became the leader of a Girl Scout group for special needs children like Sylvia's sister Laura. So all three benefitted.People often underestimate the gap between retained knowledge from the "correct" background and success. And they underestimate the ability of those without that privilege have to overcome it. By finding a way to learn what these requirements are, a step by step method to learn them and a supportive group to cheer them on, most children can succeed. At the very least, public libraries, Head Start programs, tutoring and groups like the scouts that instill values and skills are necessary

I was lucky enough to see Ms. Acevedo at our local library - she is a delightful person with a wonderful story! I bought a copy of her book for my young daughter who has an aero degree and volunteers with the Girl Scouts. Since the memoir is written for about 4th grade+ reading level, I finished reading it in no time. It is a personable, well-written story that covers a lot of ground. Little Sylvia feels alone when her family moves away from their home on a dirt road in a Hispanic area to a mostly Anglo area. When a classmate asks her to go to a Brownie scout meeting, she finds acceptance and support and a wide world of opportunities. I loved how the troop leaders also helped Sylvia's mother bloom. Syvia has to deal with poverty, home troubles, and traditional cultural expectations for Hispanic women, but with the practical life skills learned from scouting and the encouragement of her mother, teachers, and scout leaders she becomes ready to blast off to her dreams. I especially loved the last few chapters of how she goes to college and works at jobs where she is the only woman. This book is important for girls, but boys can learn and be inspired from it, too. This is a remarkable story for anyone.
