Lynn Schooler is one of America's great living authors. His work, set in Alaska, is beautifully crafted. In reading this book there are many times when one has simply to stop and re-read a sentence or whole paragraph to enjoy the beauty of such crystal clear writing and structure. I often wonder, "How many hours did he labor to get exactly the right combination of nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs to make this master construction of a sentence?" The Blue Bear is non-fiction at its best. It tells of the friendship between the author and a Japanese nature photographer, Michio Hoshino. Hoshino wants to get a picture of a rare glacier bear or blue bear. Schooler and Hoshino spent more than a decade looking for such a bear and their friendship grew and flourished during that time. As you follow Schooler and Hoshino through their ventures, you are treated to wonderful stories about Alaska from millions of years ago to the modern age. You can come to understand a lot about Alaska and what brings fascination to so many people by the largest of US states. I have been traveling to Alaska for over a decade in pursuit of salmon and halibut. I have traveled over a bit of the waters of Southeast Alaska - they are so huge that it would takes months, if not years, to explore them all. The Blue Bear will be with me on all forthcoming trips so that I can dip into it to enhance my understanding of and love for Alaska. But the value of the book with respect to Alaska is only a portion of what a reader will receive. The book is really about life and renewal, about seeking and losing, about loving and needing, and much more. Please read this book. You will be forever grateful you did.

Every so often you come across a writer whose stories come across so effortlessly, that it's like you are sitting down with an old friend you have known all your life. Lynn is such a writer. His stories are beautiful, engaging, and penetrating.If you love stories of mountains, seas, bears, and Alaska, this book is a great choice. Lynn's intelligence and humility gives his stories an extra layer of polish and depth that makes this book all the more enjoyable.I picked up the Blue Bear right after I finished reading Walking Home, Lynn's other book. I would highly recommend that as well.It's been a year since I read both these books, and I just searched him to see if he had written any more, which is when I decided to write this review (his stories will remain with you for a long time).

Schooler covers quite a bit of territory in this tight book. I enjoyed the accompanying map that I could use to follow all his adventures. His writing, above all else, is honest and at times gut-wrenching. Many of the awful experiences he suffers through are relatable. If anyone has ever unexpectedly lost a loved one, for whatever reason, can relate to the personal devastation he goes through. On the other hand he survives. This book is intimately involved about that survival. It's also about the art of the naturalist photographer and the endless beauty of the inland-passage of Alaska. I couldn't put this book down.

Very enjoyable read about friendships, adventure, love and loss. Captivated me and lost sleep for a couple of days until I finished it. Of course, when it was finished, I wanted MORE! Excellent job.

What an amazing read! Lynn has a way of telling a story that keeps you involved. His descriptions make me feel as if I were there. He has put so much heart and soul as well as knowledge into this book that I feel like I was entering into another reality. Great job! I want to read his other books now!

I rarely take time to read a novel preferring to use my time to find out how to grow something or understand a complex tool or program. I was encouraged to read the Blue Bear because it might relate to some of my background and interests. Lynn Schooler has an incredible and unique ability to describe his world and experiences. The rich use of vocabulary and perception literally paints the landscape on your mind. I had to have a copy of this book on my shelf to remind me of the Alaska I know and I have pre-ordered his new book based on his writing and introspective skills. I suspect his lonely life style gave him time to see a rich complex life that most of us rush by ignoring the relevance in our own heritage. There is something for every mind in this book.

I only read half the book - not sure why I didn't finish it. If you appreciate wild landscapes you would like this book.

Wonderful book!

I found the conversational formatting to be a little difficult to follow at times but it did feel like real people talking. I did enjoy learning about the characters as it progressed.

I read this book over five days, I could not put it down. It is an absolutely perfect sequel with trademark Ponicsan crackling dialogue and a send up of war that equals Catch 22. Billy Bad-Ass, Mule and Meadows reunite with perfection and humanity and the conclusion is very satisfying. This will join The Last Detail proudly on my bookshelf. Glad to see they are making a movie, but it won't be as good as the book. Well done!

Terrific read. Poignant, funny, irreverent and timely.

I found Prof. Huang's Stat Mech book ONLY a good reference for checking, looking up and comparing his SM math formulas, equations and calculations against other more modern SM books (e.g. Pathria, Kardar and Greiner).The wording of Prof. Huang's book is confusing and unclear (and intimidating as well !) .CASE IN POINT - Chapter 8 - Quantum Statistical Mechanics1. Eqn. 8.10 which defines the fundamental QSM "entity" DENSITY MATRIX. Prof. Huang does not specify that the DENSITY MATRIX is an ENSEMBLE AVERAGE (compare this with Pathria's Eqn 5.1.7 )2. It turns out that Prof. Huang approach is to consider Time Averaging only, which is indeed a more realistic calculation than performing an "imaginary" Averaging over Ensembles.3. What is the pedagogical intent of the word "effectively" in Huang's explanation for Eqn. 8.7 ( which relates to the Postulate of Random Phase cancellation) ?4. What is the use of replacing the Cn coefficients in Eqn. 8.1 by Bn coefficients in Eqn. 8.7 ?The Bn complex coeffs. all have norm ONE and their phases "cancel" out .(This is clearly done in Pathria's Eqn. (5.2.A) Eqn. 7)5. It is difficult to understand the consequence of the Bn coeff. being "random" complex numbers unless the Hamiltonian eigenfunctions (Eqn 8.4) are used to derive that for a Microcanonical Ensemble Averaged Density its associated Matrix is diagonal. Pathria's SM book skips and avoids Huang's confusing rigamarole and simply proceeds to the Eqn. for the Density Matrix TRACE (Eq. 5.1.8).6. Pathria's Eqn. 5.2.A.7. clearly explains and "calculates' how the random phases cancel out when averaging over a microcanonical ensemble.7. What is "trivial" about about accurately describing an incident beam of particles (end of section 8.1) ?8. Prof. Huang emphasizes, or rather, replaces Ensemble Averaging by Time Averaging. That is a very different ball of wax compared to (Pathria and Kardar).9. Time Averaging is NOT necessarily equivalent to Ensemble Averaging, an explanation of how the two Averaging procedures will (or may) give the same result would be highly valuable. This is related to an Ensemble Equilibrium condition as explained in Pathria Section 5.1.10. I didn't find Huang's Section 8.4 on the Third Law of Thermodynamics particularly enlightening. Prof. Huaag in fact states that "Apart from these specific examples ....we cannot give a more universal proof for the third law"(The statement seems even contradictory since Haung states that the "specific examples include all known substances " ???)

I just completed a class taught from Huang. It was rocky. If this is your first time through a serious stat mech class, you have difficulty with thermodynamics, or you are the sort of person that learns by doing, then this probably isn't the book for you.That being said, if you have a strong background in stat mech and thermo, you'll probably find Huang quite enlightening. Huang's approach isn't the most pedagogically sound, but he is more insightful than most. (In the sense of what he presents, not necessarily how he presents it.)Additionally, while there are errors in the book, there aren't so many that it makes it unreadable -- the book is hard to read based on its own construction.I managed to do well in the course, but it was by constantly referencing other books. If this is your first time through, I recommend reading the material of the current chapter in another book first, running a couple of example problems from that book, and then reading through Huang. It seemed to work better as a reference into usually uncovered topics than as a textbook. The first few chapters on thermodynamics and (non-quantum) statistical mechanics are probably best learned from another source.

You cannot beat this book for help reviewing for prelims or comps. The problems are typical of what you would find on a stat mech prelim, and the answers are in the back of the book. Combine this with Schoeder's An Introduction to Thermal Physics for a total Thermo + Stat Mech course.The book is also very helpful during grad-level Stat Mech courses. It makes a great companion to Pathria's Statistical Mechanics, Second Edition.

Huang has a very consistent style of presentation. I love it.

In my 18 years of formal education, this is the worst textbook I have ever used in any subject. His writing style is awful, the book is littered with typos, his notation is completely different from any I've ever seen, and attempting the homework problems is similar to trying to write an essay in Korean with only a travel guidebook as a reference. It says with pocket guide and I didn't receive a pocket guide as other reviewers. Just the book. One thing I dislike is false advertisement.

If you have always seen the tele monitors in the hospital and don't know what the zigzag on it means, this is the book you need when you have to take an intensive critical care course.This was a required text for my critical care course and amazon did a good job shipping it on time.I liked the book and as many times as i've studied conduction in my A&P classes, the fact that i'm a physics and chemistry person makes me forget certain stuff in bio. This book does such a good job of explaining conduction in making you really understand what happens in various stages like depolirazion and repolization. I like the approach because you kinda need to know which ions are coming out at each phase so you'll know when to prescribe a calcium channel blocker for a patient and when to prescribe a class II or II antiarrhythmic.I didn't get time to use the CD because time moves so fast when you're under stress but i did love the pocket companion and the only thing is that it doesn't tell you the treatments in it. You'll have to look at the big book itself to know how to treat a 3rd degree block. I never thought i'd be able to get the heart blocks down in my head but thanks to this book i did.Just a little thing i'll share with readers, here's one way to remember a wenkenbach. It goes "longer, longer, longer, longer, then you have a wenkenbach."the P-r interval keeps getting longer and longer till you finally dorp a qrs. My instructor sang it in a silly way and i thought i'd share it. In that way you'll recognize a Mobitz type I when you see one.I tried different ECG books and this one one worked for me.

product is ok. i don't have any other textbook to compare it to, but there are a lot of EKG strips to look at in each section. it is helpful and wasn't a total waste of money. i'm passing my class using this textbook.

I passed my EKG section of a diagnostic medicine course. The small pocket reference was a huge help and I studied that for almost everything and only used the big book to learn more when something in the small book didnt make sense.

This product was comparable to others on the market. Nothing spectacular, but gave lots of room for practice.

I don't think this has made readying ECG's any clearer. I had to buy this book for school, I really do not find it useful or helpful

About the Author

Winner of the 2016 Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of American PoetsSHARON OLDS was born in San Francisco and educated at Stanford University and Columbia University. The winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and England’s T. S. Eliot Prize for her 2012 collection, Stag’s Leap, she is the author of ten previous books of poetry and the winner of many other awards and honors, including the Wallace Stevens Award, the inaugural San Francisco Poetry Center Award for her first book, Satan Says (1980), and the National Book Critics Circle Award for her second, The Dead and the Living, which was also the Lamont Poetry Selection for 1983. The Father was short-listed for the T. S. Eliot Prize, and The Unswept Room was a finalist for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Olds teaches in the Graduate Creative Writing Program at New York University and helped to found the NYU outreach programs, among them the writing workshop for residents of Goldwater Hospital on Roosevelt Island, and for the veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. She lives in New York City.

I love Sharon Olds. This book has less of a narrative theme than her other books of poetry. It praises, in her incomparable way, the everyday items that make up our lives. You might think writing about menstruation or birth control would be boring or even distasteful, but Olds is always minutely descriptive and shockingly enthusiastic. Even when some of these poems seem less polished, there are so many original odes that you will find much to admire here. And it is on the verge of daring--like so much of her poetry.

Totally over the top poet. She includes the most personal details (!).

Very clever poet with great sense of humor ...a real "women's" poet!!

I can't really describe how much I love the way that Sharon Olds writes her odes but this book is worth buying.

Sharon Olds is awesome as usual.

I have loved many Sharon Olds poems for decades. However, this collection feels a little too heady and lacks the appeal and power that have appealed to me over the years.
