I love David Sedaris especially when he is writing about his family or his partner, Hugh. He is SO funny! His performance of his work is the best way to experience his writing. (So, get the audio books!) I first heard him on public radio (NPR) but I know he performs his work live on tour as well. I will say that while most of his work is not at all offensive, there are a few essays here and there on this audio book and others of his, that have graphic sexual content (i.e. when he was cleaning apartments for a living a man openly masturbated and watched porn in front of him) or language (i.e. when quoting someone else, usually his little brother) that some people may not find tasteful. I think he is a talented writer with a uniquely hilarious American voice that should not be missed.

At least it is for David Sedaris. The second oldest of a large brood (the term is particularly fitting here), he and his siblings clung together for dear life. Born into an uneasy marriage, both parents shell-shocked from their own miserable childhoods, the Sedaris kids had only each other. In adulthood, they continue to bicker and cling in an endless cycle of love and rejection and exasperation and need.All of them are outsiders, trying with greater or lesser success to fit into a world that was never a good fit to begin with. Would they have been happier or more content or felt more at home if the family had remained in New York State? The author remembers the move to North Carolina as a watershed event. From that point on, it was the Greeks against the Rednecks and the Rednecks outnumbered them by a wide margin.Or was it simply that Lou and Sharon Sedaris had unrealistic expectations of middle-class life. Children of the Great Depression, they believed that his engineering career and the suburban house and country club membership it afforded would make them happy. Middle-class families in ads always LOOK happy, don’t they?This is a typical David Sedaris book. He mines snarky humor from his family’s pain and confusion, past and present. His father’s anger, his mother’s depression, his siblings’ tragedies and triumphs, and his own career as the geekiest, most miserable teen in the history of the human race. All are grist for the mill.We see him as a child, basking in his mother’s charm and casual acceptance while sensing her unhappiness. Then we see him as a grown man, his mother dead and beyond his help. His father very much alive and as obliviously cruel as ever. His long, happy partnership with a man who’s as unlike him as chalk and cheese. They have nothing in common but love.A born writer writes because he MUST. To record the events of his life - even the horrible ones - is the only way he can deal with them. Sedaris laughs at himself and his troubles and absurdities and he generously invites us to laugh along with him. What could be better?My favorite chapter is “Slumus Lordicus” in which Lou and Sharon embark on an ill-fated (what else?) attempt to build an empire of rental property and become wealthy. It can be done and HAS been done, but not by two people who lack the savvy to spot a potentially disastrous tenant or the moxie to deal with one after the fact.The Empire didn’t make the family rich, but it did provide tender bonding moments for father and son as they fight to the death over Lou’s campaign to use his oldest son as slave labor and as they team up to pit themselves (always pathetically) against their common enemies - the wily tenants. It’s classic Sedaris and humor doesn't get any better than that.

I love David Sedaris. I also love that he's from my hometown, though (1) I've never met him, and (2) I didn't know that until after I'd started following his writing career. In this collection, he mentions Binghamton twice. But that little thrill is secondary to the impact of these essays. I realize this is an older book -- I recently read his newest -- but it was part of a gap in my Sedaris reading. As usual, he springs a lot of surprises. And he is searingly open about his life and himself. And yet, he laughs, and invites us to laugh with him. What a generous gift.

I admire the way David Sedaris can spin a yarn, but I find him too dislikable to ever read another of his books. I was particularly disturbed by his telling of his compulsion to want to touch peoples’ heads — especially a young boy’s — and in the cruel manner in which he dispatched from life a suffering mouse. C’mon, David, just end the poor thing’s life already. Don’t be such a wuss. If I ever read another Sedaris tome, it will be to pick up writing style tips. His manner is colorful and descriptive, and the scenes he paints appear vividly in my mind. That part I like.

This is a great book! David Sedaris always makes me laugh out loud and I just love every story he writes. I didn't want to put this book down and I didn't want it to end. I love the titles of his books too-he's such a unique writer and the way he describes things makes you able to really picture the scene and feel like you're transported there. His stories are funny, interesting and so different from anything else I've read.

Every single book that I've read of David Sedaris is laugh out loud hilarious. I tried reading this on a flight in which I didn't have a travel partner, so I'm quite sure the passengers around me thought I had lost it by the time we arrived at our destination because I was laughing myself to tears.

David Sedaris' take on life is just a little left of center. He is droll and entertaining in this collection of stories that mostly focus on his family's loony adventures and skewed sense of the world. I'm really glad he is not my brother because the man has no mercy in his depictions of his sisters, brother and parents. No one escape's unscathed, not his boyfriend Hugh or their eighty year old neighbor or David himself.Some of the stories are laugh out loud funny, others are more than a little gross, but like a bad accident you can't help but look (or read). I have to say that my first book by Sedaris was When You are Engulfed in Flames, and it was an audio. As much as I enjoyed reading this book, I realize that something is lost when reading this as opposed to listening, and it is Sedaris' inflections and pauses and dry tone that make him such a great storyteller. So I liked it a lot- but would have loved to listen to it.

We are planning to do the Hikers' Haute Route this summer on a self-guided tour, and have compared the company's agenda for our route with the book - the book has great information which has already been helpful to get our heads wrapped around what the trip will entail, where it goes, what we can expect and what we should bring.

Reynolds books are *the* guides for the do-it-yourself alps trekker. Buy this, buy a plane ticket, prepare for a phenomenal holiday.

Great overall view of the hike, but realize that his maps are not a substitute for having more detailed maps along (as Reynolds recognizes and recommends). He does tend to underestimate the hike times for the legs.

Easy to follow. Easily did a self guided trek from Moiry to Zermatt. I cut the book in half to save weight. Duct tape bound.

Hiked this route last month and the book had great directions & descriptions. There are a few minor updates on the trail, but nothing major. Kev is a legend on the trail, and everyone had this book.

While while it is possible to quibble with some of the details, including estimated distances, this book enabled a group of us to successfully complete the journey from Chamonix to Zermatt without the expense of a guide. It was a trip of a lifetime!

Great guide for the hike of a lifetime!

Totally comprehensive... and entirely packable! Will use it to plan our adventure, and will carry it with us during the trek.

I've been a Waylon fan for years and loved when he and Jessi sang together. I bought this book mainly because I was super curious about Jessi's half of 'the story'. I could hardly put the book down. Such a tribute to Jessi's dedication to the deep love she had for her man and her love for the Lord. This love story paralleled my own in a few ways so I felt such a connection in so many areas. I am always amazed at how God lays in your lap everything you need right when you need it to help you get to the place He is leading you. I was 2 1/2 years into grieving for my husband and a home remodel that simply needed to be done, not that I really wanted to do it, brought about a cleansing of my soul and allowed me to completely cry my heart out and begin to let go of my man. Although I felt a freeing of my life during this time I was feeling a bit guilty but yet couldn't seem to stop the roller coaster I was on in the letting go process. God laid this book in my lap. I was not looking for it at all. I dropped it on my Kindle simply because I liked these people and they were a happy part of my past. I was amazed at how much my life had been a bit like Jessi's. I had an ornery husband although not to the extreme of Waylon. Beer drinking, cigarette smoking, women appreciating, wife loving, etc. I found myself laughing, crying and every emotion in between during the whole book. But when I got to the last chapter I felt hope for whatever time I have left on this earth. I found honesty in the feelings that come from letting go. I found forgiveness for myself for thinking I might possibly be able to love again although I too am very content living alone and after 51 1/2 years with my guy, he is everywhere I look. He will always be a part of me. But because of this book I am on my way to complete healing. Thank you Jessi for writing this book and thank you God for putting it in my possession.

This is an insightful read into both Waylon and Jessi. It covers Jessi's relationship with her parents, her first husband, Duane Eddy, and her second husband Waylon. And also her role as a mother, a performer, a songwriter, and her faith. It covers how she coped during the tough times. It covers their respect, friendship and love for Chet Atkins, the Cashs, Kristofferson and Nelson. This time period created some amazing country singers and songwriters. Waylon will always be a part of her. Jessi is an insightful, caring and loving person. I appreciated her book. And will continue to enjoy her music as well as Waylon's. The words in her songs will mean more to me now. So glad she is still writing, singing and recording.

I read this book last night and it was everything I was hoping it would be. I couldn't put it down. What a love story.

I pre-ordered this book and could hardly wait until it came out - and I was not dissapointed!I HIGHLY recommend reading this book; it is a page-turner!

I put religion aside but truly admire her faith. Waylon was my favorite singer and still is to some extent. Like him I opened myself to other kinds of music. The members of The Highwaymen will always be my favorites. I loved the stories and they were expanded upon by Jessie. I was happy to get to know her as I had always found her to be both beautiful and an angelic voice. I opened up to Shooter's music as well as Lukas Nelson's and others. I was sadden at end of Waylon's life but happy he had Jessie and Shooter. He also had a multitude of friends non closer then the Highwaymen. Through that I reminded of my friendship and value it even more.

Couldn't put it down. I gained a huge amount of respect for Jessi. Her talent, her convictions, her choices and her patience and her journey. Great insight to the music business along the way.

I have been a fan of your music all my life. Raised on Country Music, there was never a time when my Mom didn't have the radio on. We went to a campground where you and Waylon performed many summers through my childhood. My father was a over the road trucker, he had all the greats on 8-track tapes!!! My father was a lot like Waylon, he was my Moms problem. But like you, she never let on. He was the love of her life and in loving him, she gave him, his best life until the end. He was a wonderful father. He passed on, when he took God's hand in 2013. Like you wrote, my Mom also had to have great patience. Your story so touched my heart. I'm glad that you are living in the glory of God. To any fan of the Outlaw Country Music. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!

In AdministrativeBurden, Herd and Moynihan document that the administrative burdens citizens regularly encounter in their interactions with the state are not simply unintended byproducts of governance, but the result of deliberate policy choices. Because burdens affect people’s perceptions of government and often perpetuate long-standing inequalities, understanding why administrative burdens exist and how they can be reduced is essential for maintaining a healthy public sector.   Through in-depth case studies of federal programs and controversial legislation, the authors show that administrative burdens are the nuts-and-bolts of policy design. Regarding controversial issues such as voter enfranchisement or abortion rights, lawmakers often use administrative burdens to limit access to rights or services they oppose. For instance, legislators have implemented administrative burdens such as complicated registration requirements and strict voter-identification laws to suppress turnout of African American voters. Similarly, the right to an abortion is legally protected, but many states require women seeking abortions to comply with burdens such as mandatory waiting periods, ultrasounds, and scripted counseling. As Herd and Moynihan demonstrate, administrative burdens often disproportionately affect the disadvantaged who lack the resources to deal with the financial and psychological costs of navigating these obstacles.   However, policymakers have sometimes reduced administrative burdens or shifted them away from citizens and onto the government. One example is Social Security, which early administrators of the program implemented in the 1930s with the goal of minimizing burdens for beneficiaries. As a result, the take-up rate is about 100 percent because the Social Security Administration keeps track of peoples’ earnings for them, automatically calculates benefits and eligibility, and simply requires an easy online enrollment or visiting one of 1,200 field offices. Making more programs and public services operate this efficiently, the authors argue, requires adoption of a nonpartisan, evidence-based metric for determining when and how to institute administrative burdens, with a bias toward reducing them. By ensuring that the public’s interaction with government is no more onerous than it need be, policymakers and administrators can reduce inequality, boost civic engagement, and build an efficient state that works for all citizens.

I loved this little book so much. I put the Beatitudes to memory and recite them to myself regularly. When I got this book, I learned that these are not individual attitudes, but rather a collection that every Christ-follower should own in his character...one builds on the other...then we are told that we are the light of the world, and the salt of the earth. With all of the beatitudes in ownership we should "so let our light so shine that others see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." And this is the Christian's goal, isn't it...glorifying God in all we do.

I had always considered The Beatitudes as separate attributes, but Arthur Pink has put them in a completely new light. He presents a view that all of them are a progression of Christian development and all should be the experience of Christian growth in every person. His conclusion also shows Jesus Christ as the embodiment of all of these characteristics brought to perfection. Understanding this progression also helped to memorise them in their developmental order.

The book offers a different perspective on the Beatitudes. He interprets them more as stepping stones in the development of Christian character, not as separate character traits. I am not sure I am convinced but he does a good job at explaining himself.

Pink has great thoughts to teach you about the Lord' s"Sermon on the Mount". I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about these Words of our Master and Savior,Jesus Christ through Pink's excellent writings. ( a new writer to me/although writtena good while back in time.)

I had never read Pink before but I am so grateful to have had his books recommended to me. His biblical studies are extraordinary and this book is no exception. Some say he errs on the side of Calvinism but I think to not take his works seriously is unwise. What he wrote almost 100 years ago still stands as a beacon of intelligent, insightful and deeply spiritual study. Take the golden nuggets and store them in your mind as you daily walk with your Lord and Saviour.

A W Pink, as usual provides brilliant commentary of God's word. The author unfolds the Beatitudes in a way that exposes the richness of God's word to His children. Comforting believers as nothing else can in this sin cursed and fallen world.

I would recommend this book as it will expound on the Beattitudes found in the Gospel of Matthew. It is a short book that will bless the reader.

A. W. Pink hit the nail on the head by getting straight to the point; The heart of the matter is first realizing our state of being without Christ. When we do come to the place of seeing ourselves for who/what we really are, we cannot help but see how poor/bankrupt we are - so it comes from that realization that we cry out to God in a state of being poor in spirit. The process goes forward from there - and Pink lays out the progression one by one making it easy to understand and put into practice! This would make a very thoughtful small group study.

Dynasty of Evil is the third book in Drew Karpyshyn's trilogy about Darth Bane and the Old Republic. The action in the three books takes place about a thousand years before the time of A New Hope. The first book was Path of Destruction which introduced us to Darth Bane when he first became a Sith and developed the maxim of having only two Sith - a master and an apprentice. The second book was Rule of Two with Darth Bane training his apprentice Zannah and growing ever stronger in the Dark Side with the help of the barnacle-like orbalisks.Now, in Dynasty of Evil, we see Bane become even more powerful as he waits to see if his apprentice is ready to challenge him. If Zannah is not up to the challenge, Bane may need to find other alternatives. One that particularly appeals to him is to find a means of extending his own life. His scheme intertwines with a mission that he assigns to Zannah, and additional characters play important roles. Serra is the daughter of Caleb, a healer who once saved Bane's life. She is now a princess of the mining world of Doan. Lucia is Serra's bodyguard and, interestingly enough, used to be a member of the Gloom Walkers regiment at the same time as Bane. Then we have The Huntress, who is a Force-sensitive assassin, and Set Harth, an artifact hunter who used to be a Jedi. They all are interesting characters who are heavily involved with the tale.Mr. Karpyshyn does an excellent job in moving the story along and has some great action sequences as well as an ending that is open to interpretation by the reader. I look forward to seeing what he writes about next in the Star Wars universe.

This was one of the first 3 or 4 SW novels I ever read and I loved it so miuch that I ended up buying the audiobook as well as this hard copy and just obsessing over every detail. I am still questioning my own morals for basically falling in love with a man who committed one or two quite objectionable (ok terrible) crimes. Thats how well-developed this character, Bane is.I swear this is the greatest thing I've read in eons. Much of what I read in the future will be measured up against The Bane Trilogy.Yikes!! Dynasty of Evil is so great its just scary!

Hate to admit it but I like the dark side. They seem real world, believable, while the Jedi are sanctimonious priests who preach a level of virtue that is humanly unattainable. Sort of like catholic priests and we know how that turns out. Bane is real world, dude, he takes what he can and has the strength to admit the world is survival of the fittest.

Now I very, rarely give out 5**** ratings... but Dynasty of Evil is just a solid all around novel of bad guys vs bad guys in a unwinable situation.DoE is Possibly the best Star Wars novel out there. Even though it isn't considered relevant to the Star Wars universe, I still find this story a very fitting piece of the universe. Darth Bane and his apprentice are just two characters stuck among a vibrant others who are equally driven by self interest. Nobody's hands are clean and everyone 's day goes from bad to worst. A classic tragedy of characters going from bad to worst...only one will come out alive.

The final book in the trilogy, now things can resolve - or can they?Bane has aged quickly from the various stresses of his life and really wants Zannah to take him on before Bane's strength fades. After all, being cut down in your prime means you've trained a really fine apprentice. An apprentice that waits until your feeble. sigh. Not worthy. Meanwhile, he's taught Zannah the value of patience. Maybe too well.Zannah, meanwhile, is making sure she's learned as much as she's going to from her master. She already thinks she might defeat him. Also, she wants to have a worthy apprentice lined up before the big fight. It's a rule of two, not a rule of one. Good apprentices are hard to find. There are flawed and mediocre ones. She's got to chose one sometime.So, Bane is busily trying to make sure he'll be strong enough long enough to pass the title to someone worthy. All the while hiding his plan from Zannah. Zannah is getting her own plan lined up while trying to keep Bane from knowing what is coming when.It's no spoiler to say that they do resolve the conflict.

As the third book in a great series, this book had a lot to live up to, and I think it did in many ways. You could certainly complain about the predictable nature of parts, but I won't becuase I found the book entertaining in spite of this. It's one of the few Star Wars books I've read of late that have actually had characters that develop a little from the start to the finish. (A lot of the recent books have been half-baked poorly disguised marketing gimmicks with lame characters and even lousier plots.) Not so with this one, for "bad guys" Zannah and Bane are likable people, very passionate about what they believe.The ending was fitting if a little disappointing. Parts of the book are way too convenient. (Bane's rescue, etc) Still, to have such flaws and still be entertaining is commendable in a book. It's a worthwhile read. I may reread the others so it all fits nicely.

This is a great conclusion to the Darth Bane book series written by Drew Karpyshyn. If you enjoyed Path of Destruction and Rule of Two, then this is the book for you. If you haven't read them, I would recommend you do. They are well written entries in the Star Wars legends universe. The author Drew Kaypyshyn was writer for Knights of the Old Republic, so if that story telling interested you, this book series will as well.

The Darth Bane trilogy is a captivating series, and Dynasty of Evil wraps up the story in such a nail-biting way that really makes you question where the lines between light and dark are. A wonderful third installment to one of the best EU stories in the saga.
