Amazing stories of the Eastern Front. This is not Degrelle's political manifesto, but his well written and intriguing story telling of Russian Front combat. Not to be missed.

This is an amazing account of what it was really like to be a European soldier (and a volunteer at that) fighting against Soviet Russia. While I often got lost on the technical details, I found myself really moved by Degrelle's passion to save Europe from the horrors of communism.There are so many moments in the book where I really felt like I was right there in the middle of the battle. Degrelle is not shy about describing some of the terrible things he heard and saw in this insane war: ie, horses getting blown up into the air by bombs; sludging through mud nearly up to your waist for hours at a time; fighting for days on end without any sleep; walking over so many dead and blown up bodies that one nearly slips on random body parts; etc.Degrelle's descriptions of the ways in which the Soviets often treated captured soldiers was quite disturbing - although I am grateful that he did in fact take the time to explain (and thus inform the rest of us - something that I have found mainstream sources of history often fail to do). I am referring to incidents in which Soviets would beat and torture their prisoners, crucify them alive, cut off their reproductive organs and stuff them into their mouths, and so on. This is just a brief glimpse into the book and I do apologize for the crudeness of such subject matter. But unfortunately these things did happen, and Degrelle deserves credit for making a record of his experiences, so that the world can know what happened.Sickening to think that the US was giving material aid to the Soviets at the time.All in all, this is a very informative book.

This is an absolutely brilliant book! Anyone who cares about the World War II era or the actual conflict itself (which I hope is everyone) should have Degrelle's book on his shelf. Degrelle's account is valuable for several reasons. First, his is a firsthand account of the horrors of war. He was an eyewitness. Eyewitness testimonies are always insightful and valuable. Second, Degrelle's account is intriguing when you consider who he was, the political power he had, and the fact that he volunteered to go into the melee on the Eastern Front. Lastly, this book is not a rough-around-the-edges account - it is literary gold. Degrelle's writing is phenomenal! It is enthralling. He can certainly paint a picture with his words. I always respect those who can turn a phrase and articulate a point with their words. If you love this quality and you are interested in learning more about the most devastating conflict in mankind's history, get a copy of Leon Degrelle's book (and check out his other works such as "Hitler Democrat" as well).

If you enjoy combat narratives this is the one to get. Hats off, and the utmost respect is due to Leon Degrelle for not only surviving several years on the Eastern Front, but for actually thriving on it. One of the best depictions of the savage and no quarter given type of combat on the Russian Front. Couldn't put it down. Well worth spending a little money and reading time!

This book was written by a Belgian man who led a small political party before WWII. Like many Europeans of his time, he was much more concerned about Communism than Nationalism. Much of the book narratives his experiences serving with thousands of Belgians fighting the Soviets on the eastern front. The author met most of the principal personalities of the era including Mussolini, Churchill and Hitler. He evidently survived the war and went to Spain. It was refreshing to read an account of this period from someone who was personally involved instead of a "third hand" account from some historian.

This book, written by an obviously brave man [in his telling of it], shows the mindless idiocy of wars of conquest into the Soviet Russia of that day. The country was, outside the big cities, a backward sea of mud, blood, endless plains, disease and cold, -45ºF cold. Why would anyone want to conquer such a place? Hitler, that master tactician, made the decision. Degrelle and his men paid the big price for such folly. Not for a minute does he complain, while all around some of his men are suiciding to get out of it.Whether Stalin or Hitler was the bigger thug, murderer and gangster is a matter for debate. Hitler killed based on a misplaced social Darwinian theory that some races were inferior or superior. Stalin killed on the misplaced Communist social theory that some classes were inferior or superior. Both killed millions of their own citizens and made war on others in the most gruesome, frightful way possible. Prisoners routinely killed. Red Army tanks running over wounded men. Fighting in the snow, wind, cold and ice for patches of ground no sane person would ever want. This was the Eastern Front; a war between rival terror states. Yes, the early days were a walkover by the Germans, but Degrelle never saw that part of it, he came in during the winter of 1941, the worst in a hundred years. He never complains; a Belgian John Wayne who was the only man in his unit to come out of the war alive. If it's blood and guts you want, this book is for you, but don't expect to be on the winning side. Wars of this type will probably never be fought again. The next big wars, if fought, will be with nuclear weapons. After that, it'll be with sticks and stones.

If you enjoyed Blood Red Snow you will definitely enjoy this book. As expected of Leon Degrelle (and many thanks owed to the translator) the story flows with impressive articulation. I guarantee one will not regret reading this book.

I ordered this book out of desperation. My grandchildren were acting out in ways that were unsafe (ages 3 and 5 at the time) running near traffic, throwing tantrums. Without reading the entire book, I learned enough to completely turn the situation around. Recent example: I pick up my granddaughter from school and she is in her weird mood again, runs down the street and crosses it without me! Once we are in the car, I say, OK, what happened at school today? Nothing, she says. No, you don't usually act like this. What happened? See this scratch, she asks. I tripped over some blocks and three of my friends laughed at me. Behavior changes to normal. The next day I pick up my grandson. I don't rush him out to the car anymore. Instead we have a check in period sitting in the back of the car before we go anywhere. In other words we process their emotional well being before pressing on into this busy world. Huge change!

With a just-turned-two-year-old who was just starting into furious tantrums about pretty much every tiny disappointment (coming inside, getting into her car seat, leaving a room, dropping a toy, being asked not to throw things at the dog, etc., etc.), I was very eager to get some new ideas beyond the standard "just ignore it" advice. In addition to the frustration tantrums, she was also going through a spell of pinching, hitting and biting, and nothing (ignoring, separating, time-outs, scolding, yelling, earnest explanations, dirty looks, attempts at redirection) was really helping with that. In fact, most attempts just seemed to escalate the bad behavior.In just a couple of weeks, the advice in this book has really turned around my interactions with my daughter and has enabled me to almost universally nip her tantrums in the bud. As a work-at-home parent, this translates to more happiness, greater productivity, and much, much less stress.I can't speak to how well this will work with older children with better verbal skills (but since the crux of it is paying attention and connecting, it seems like good advice even for dealing with adults), but with a toddler with a pretty good ability to understand but quite a limited vocabulary and ability to express herself verbally, this method has worked wonders.Most of the trick is in the nanosecond before you react--simply asking yourself why. Why is my kid being a jerk? Usually the answer is obvious (in our case, she wants either attention or some object/situation she can't have), but being mindful of the cause shades your response just enough to connect. In the past, if I just tried to put her off for a few minutes to finish my task, her distress would quickly escalate and she would become whiny, clingy and a little insufferable.While it does take more effort to actually engage instead of acting on autopilot, I'm learning that a little upfront investment (like, seriously, a minute or two) of genuine connection at attention when my toddler just starts to go sideways can put out the fire and quickly yield plenty of extended, quiet play. Magic.The practical tips of just taking a second to physically connect, make eye contact, offer a moment of comfort, etc., before explaining and redirecting make the process easier. And the authors' trick of pointing out how much if it would annoy you if someone was treating you in the same way really helps internalize the flaws in the conventional parenting advice. I also like they detailed distinctions between giving love/attention/setting boundaries and spoiling (e.g., shielding child from negative feelings/situations, never requiring accountability, making excuses, or giving the kid too much *stuff*).While, like all self-help books, the same basic ideas are repeated many different ways, and you can start to feel like "okay, okay, I *get* it," I do feel like the repetition and examples did help me internalize the methods, and--just as importantly--helped give me a good enough sense of it to explain the concepts well to my partner (I'm the reader/filterer of the parenting books in our family). The other upshot is that hammering the ideas into your brain really does help stop you when you start to react in your default, autopilot way, so you as a parent can stop your own bad behavior and model how a smart, thoughtful person should act, even if wise choices don't always come naturally ;).Good stuff, and effective.

I won't bother with the book details, they're well covered in other reviews, so I'll just say that I really can't recommend these enough.Long story short, "The Whole Brain Child" and it's two companion books by the same authors, "No Drama Discipline", and more recently "The Yes Brain" really have been the most useful parenting books I've encountered. (they are loosely coupled, so you can read any of them individually, in any order)Of the 40 or so books (and zillion articles, studies, etc.) I gobbled up when we first found out we'd be expecting, these are the ones that really stand out, and that I can most hold up and say "I'm a better parent today than I otherwise would be, because I read this."These aren't read-once books for me - I still flip through them once in a while, as a refresher, three years later, and will probably continue to revisit them well into the future.I also make it a habit to gift hardcover copies of all three books to anyone we know who's expecting, along with an offer to buy them the e-book versions instead, if they'd rather have those.Even the best parents have room for improvement, and I can't really imagine anyone reading any of these without finding something that will add to their parenting skills.Bottom line, if you believe parenting is a skill to be honed, if you want to parent thoughtfully and intentionally rather than just echoing your own parents methods (which may have been just fine), if you want your parenting to be in tune with the facts and empirical evidence provided by modern psychology and brain-science (which has improved greatly over the last 20 years or so), and if you want a better understanding of how your child's mind works, how you can best guide that mind for long-term success, then please don't miss these books.What else can I say? Seriously, just buy the book - buy all three, if you can.Your kids will probably never thank you for reading them, but they should =o)

Even though I do agree with the whole brain approach and that discipline means teaching not punishing, I thought the book was very redundant. I felt like I did get something from the book so I gave it 3 stars. There are some key elements that I will keep in mind like "connecting before redirecting" so you "don't poke the lizard".

The advice is good but there was no reason to stretch this book to over 200 pages.

I was a first time parent when I read this and there was a lot of good information. It can even help your interactions with adults as well.

Overall I like this anthology and use selections from it with my younger students (late elementary voice class and beginner middle school students). About half the songs are very nice pieces that my students enjoy singing. The other half I have found unusable. They include inappropriate subjects like not having parents, a cowboy who is about to die, and a drunk monkey...to name a few. I know these are old folk songs, but I am personally not comfortable giving these songs to young singers.

I like the selection of songs in this book. They are a nice complement to what I already use in my voice studio. I wish some of the songs were a little bit longer, but they are very appropriate for young children.

Wonderful collection of folksongs perfect for my voice students up to age 13. The accompaniments are very simple. The recorded accompaniments can be accessed online too, which I didn't even notice when I bought it- an extra bonus!

My students love the songs. They are great for younger voice students.

Very interesting and unique list of songs. My daughter is learning The Mermaid and is having so much fun with it!

The selection of songs is very good, but the arranger has chosen such unusual, strange sometimes unpleasant harmonies that I am not sure if I will be using this book with my voice students. This songs are found in different collections with much more pleasing arrangements.

This was the most enjoyable read because it follows Gina from denial to acceptance and then to winning her life back from MS. We learn about what worked for her and what did not work. She shares the most personal of failures and the elation of her discoveries in the things that do work for her. She demonstrates how a family can walk this path together and everyone wins through the trials and tribulations. Her message can be applied to anyone suffering from chronic pain or illness. She is a warrior in her book and shares that you can be one, too. My favorite chapter was 8...Keeping It Simple. Great advice to anyone who wants to try something wholesome instead of medication for everything that ails us. Thank you for writing this, Gina! You are a rock star!

Drastically incomplete, lacking actual back story for several of the landmarks or ghosts that were included. And the bonus snippet of bigotry was an unexpected slap. I found myself yelling at the book at times, as it completely skipped over well known actually haunted places to invent new ones, or gave totally false origins to ghost stories. For instance, the Bellevue Biltmore fire was missing (!), and the ghost in the Fort Harrison Hotel had been there since the early 20th century but was attributed to a more salacious origin to suit the author's dislike of the current tenant. There were nearly no sources given, however, so I suppose the inaccuracies can be excused as beginning and ending with the author.

There are not many books specific to the haunted history of St. Petersburg, FL and this book is one to have on the shelf. Being one of the rare native St. Petersburgians (not yet 30 years old), I was intrigued about the stories and history of the places I grew up with and pass by every day. I am not a big reader but I couldn't put this one down. I read half the book the day it arrived. The author is very descriptive with the locations and has obviously done her homework with fact checking. She provides relative historical photos a few witty words which make for a smirk or two each chapter. My only con is that is isn't longer. Maybe a second book including the Crystal Bay Hotel on Central and Park Street or the London Bus Pub in Seminole is in the works?

I really liked this book. I knew about some of the "haunted" places in this book, the nice part was, getting the HISTORY of the who, what and why it is haunted. This book is well written and actually explains the possible reasons why. Told by someone who actually went to all the places, just as you can... the catch is, you now know the ins and outs that he had to uncover. If you ever go to these places you know what to look for and why. Excellent book! Keep it handy if you go "exploring".

I am a real ghosthunter and I live in pinellas county.It was a most interesting and fascinating to read a combination of hauntings, as well as a history to tell the storys!Many of the places I was there as a child.Interesting and reviting!You wont be dissappointed.

Knowing the local 'spooky' history is fun and meaningful... and something you can share with your kids or grandkid leading up to Halloween.

I wanted to love this book because it’s history about where I live, but it was a hard read as the writing style is very amateur and I didn’t enjoy the actual reading. Two stars because the history lessons are decent; the delivery is lacking and written in a seemingly childlike way, and I’d recommend the actual ghost tour over the book (I’ve experienced Ybor, Tampa, and St. Pete Beach, all of which are excellent).

I was so engrossed while reading this book in my kindle that I was surprised when I came to the end. I want to visit these places I've just learned about.

Would like to get in touch with author about maybe book of home i lived in with my five children for five years , with a 3-4 year investigation by brandy and team everything account for evp ect...everyhing i kept a journal for those years was copied by her i lt disappeared a few months later moveing out of state then came back not only all my children but guest to stories later heard, to i was renting homes in roser park when i came back and was approached by the new family in there to answer questions i rented the home of 20 properties homes on hill in roser for land lord was not aloud to bring up nor did me or my children like to discuss the things that took place there other then ms. Sparks team who were very nice, would like to speak with you, im not great with a computer or emailng but would make a great book hust a thought thanks for your time if you ever see this.
