Dr. Rotella, through his years of experience with exceptional people, has been able to clearly identify specific characteristics that cause that exceptionality to express. He furthers the idea that "talent" in the conventional sense isn't an inherent gift, and that it is much more the working habits and attitudes of exceptional people that sets them apart. Being exceptional can be taught and learned. He also points out that the cost of exceptionality may not be a price that everyone wants to pay. Dr. Rotella's book is one-of-a-kind and is required reading for those who deal with (or are) standouts in any field.

I was reading this book on a flight to San Francisco & was confused when another passenger handed me some tissue? Only then did I realize tears were streaming uncontrollably down my face. No book has ever caused me to shed a tear, but somehow Rotella had struck a chord that left me publicly sobbing on an airplane of all places! I felt Rotella had written a story of my own life and it was being presented back to me in a way I could understand. Rotella encourages us all to seek our God given abilities / gifts, explore them, and exploit them to their highest levels! For the individual that does not realize their talents, this read may be difficult to comprehend. However, for the individual that understands God has blessed them with something special, in whatever area(s) of life, this book is a must read!!!!! Best book I've read to date!

Not as good as Rob's previous book "The 15th Club". This one is more for Golf Pros, not amateurs or golfers that play for fun and bit of healthy competition. Some points good but overall not a book you would want to read again. The 15th Club is much much better- something that every golfer can relate to.

Rotella is not a "sports psychologist." He was a college teacher and worked with Davis Love and a few others in the 80's. Made his reputation on them and wrote a few books. Very simplistic viewpoints on​ performance.

Anything Bob Rotella writes becomes a masterpiece of art. And this book is no different. They way he breaks down the mind of athletes really intrigues me. And to be able to transfer those though processes over to mine has been a great learning curve. This book is strongly recommended.

As a fan of both golf and self help, this book is an interesting and useful read. There are so many interesting stories about professional athletes and the way the author ties in the self help concepts, its good stuff. Although the book probably could have been 25% shorter, it keeps you interested in the concepts.

Bought this for my football coaching husband and he absolutely loves it. Can't put it down. Sometimes I catch him shaking his head up and down in agreement with what's written. Suggested for anyone who wants a lesson on the mind of very successful people.

Quite inspirational, filled with anecdotes and examples of pros who dedicated themselves to achieving supreme success. A must have if you plan to win. Re-read it to keep your goals fresh.

I did not want to believe that changing my diet and lifestyle would have such a huge impact on my osteoarthritis but was feeling so good after a month into this program I am a believer. It's tough but definitely worth it in the long run.

This book gave me hope and I was excited to get started. So instead of cobbling together all the supplements in her book myself, I decided to buy the supplement kit from Blum Health MD - the author’s company. It was really expensive at $775. Dr. Blum’s marketed this kit in her online store as:1. “….all the supplements that you need to follow the 90-Day program in Dr. Blum’s book”2. “we created this kit to make following the Healing Arthritis Program outlined in Dr. Blum’s book easy for you!”3. “This kit is perfect for following the Arthritis Protocol from Dr. Blum’s book, Healing Arthritis.”I was excited the day the kit arrived and then shocked when I unpacked it. It only had 50% (based on cost) of the supplements outlined in her book for Steps 1 & 2 and nothing at all for at Step 3…..so if you expected supplements for all 3 Steps you only got 20% of what you needed.When I complained they told me this kit wasn’t to follow the program in this book but was for a brand new Online Program. Really? Their advertising sure sounded like it was for the program in this book. I wrote 4 letters to push them to change their advertising so no one else would get duped. I also asked them to stand by their original advertising and send me the missing supplements. See a picture of the ad they are still running today.Just so you know if you want the supplements for all 3 Steps of the program in Dr. Susan Blum’s book it will cost you over $4,000. Stunned? Me too – and I thought $775 price tag was outrageous.Should it have been a huge red flag that she heavily peddled her own products in this book like other reviewers have mentioned? Before spending $775 I should have read the reviews on other sites about her and her medical practice. My experience makes me wonder if any of the content in this book is true.So far they have refused to honor the original advertising and send me the missing supplements. Seems like they can’t figure out what the right thing to do is…..as they have referred it to their lawyer. Good Grief!

I bought this book to educate myself about weddings, having been summoned as the maid of honour at my best friend's wedding, as well as being long-term engaged myself. Others have said that this book is not quite as useful for <$5k weddings, but that's what we plan on doing for ours and the information dispensed is still extremely relevant, though you have to be a little more creative and continue gathering ideas elsewhere. Otherwise, this is the only solid book you need to plan your wedding, and encourages you taking your own path in making the special day of you and your significant other (as well as any honeymoon) a great success.

It doesn't matter if you're planning a small wedding. She tells you how to cut down costs and all about contracts (which everyone will come across when planning their wedding). As the maid of honor, I now serve as the wedding coordinator (to save money) and this book is practically training me- teaching me to organize and prioritize lists to present to the bride.This makes the stress of planning plummet because she warns you about problems you might encounter and how to get around them.Some of these chapters include:cakes, stationery, lingerie, tents, insurance, port-a-potties, party favors, the toasts, photography, tipping, invitations, top music selections, guest list, guest accommodations, etiquette, different religions, wedding traditions, menu planning, catering, florists, legal (license requirements), gift tracking and types of thank-you notes, dinnerware, china patterns, shower ideas, rehearsal dinners, Bride & Groom fashions including what looks flattering on different body types, what to do weeks before the wedding, ring styles and their meaning, etc! (This is not even half of what is in this book).In the back of the book, it has a list of items where you can keep your budget notes, contacts pages for every element she goes over in the book (i.e. florist, make-up artist, transportation, music, hotels, etc) and lastly lots of pages for notes. So all the information that's important is all in one place and you don't have to keep scraps of paper in your purse.IT'S WONDERFUL. If you have no clue what you're doing, this helps you find where to start and leads you through every aspect of planning up until your big day and then some. Itsead of dreading all the work, this will get you excited about the small details because she gives you choices and samples. I love this book and to be honest I think it's a pretty cheap price for what this book is worth. PURE GOLD. Good luck brides!!

Half the battle with wedding planning is just learning to trust your gut and stop worrying so much. Somehow, regardless of how much I knew and understood this I always felt like I was missing or forgetting something. The perpetual planner that I am, this book served as a great tool to not only focus my efforts, but more importantly, calm my nerves.The text covers everything from picking a gown to laying a place-setting. From the 20 or so wedding based books that I accumulated, this has the most comprehensive planning calendar and to-do lists. I was able to amend them slightly given the smaller size of my wedding, but had a great starting block. At one point during our wedding planning I found my fiancé thumbing through the section on bands/music and dog-earring a few pages for later reference.The tips outlined are realistic and actionable - which to me means much more than high dollar celebrity gossip wedding news or overly laborious crafty DIY projects. The examples given outline several price points in most cases and value can be created by taking on task of `wedding planner' yourself.Through what can be a very trying (and exciting) process, this book was truly a blessing. I've recommended (and in many cases gifted) it to friends and family that are working towards their big day. Five stars all the way!

I bought tons of wedding books when I began planning and this one was by far my favorite. It explains different concepts with pictures such as different bouquet arrangements, trains, veils, etc. That way you know the terminology when considering what you want. It also gave me a lot of insight into etiquette and knowing what to do. This book really helped guide me and my mom when planning. Ours is loaded with sticky tabs that we placed for easy flip to. By far the best wedding book yet. It also gives you information about the history of wedding traditions and these were very interesting. Definitely an easy read to. I have passed it to friend after friend and they have loved it too!!! Definitely a must have!

This book is fantastic -- very practical and comprehensive. I got every popular wedding book out there from the library (including this one) and none of the others came close. I ended up buying it since it has such detailed advice on everything from invitation etiquette to the names of different train lengths to how to approach tipping (and a multitude in-between). Planning a wedding has a whole new lexicon of its own and this book has helped me navigate every element of it.

About the Author

John McPhee was born in Princeton, New Jersey, and was educated at Princeton University and Cambridge University. His writing career began at Time magazine and led to his long association with The New Yorker, where he has been a staff writer since 1965. Also in 1965, he published his first book, A Sense of Where You Are, with Farrar, Straus and Giroux, and in the years since, he has written nearly 30 books, including Oranges (1967), Coming into the Country (1977), The Control of Nature (1989), The Founding Fish (2002), and Uncommon Carriers (2007). Encounters with the Archdruid (1972) and The Curve of Binding Energy (1974) were nominated for National Book Awards in the category of science. McPhee received the Award in Literature from the Academy of Arts and Letters in 1977. In 1999, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Annals of the Former World. He lives in Princeton, New Jersey.

The best McPhee yet. Some of his work is now assuming the role of a retrospective, which creates a sort of poignancy that adds flavor all its own. He has gotten even more meticulous, but now you expect his dottering over small details that would likely never be chased down even if they were wrong--and they make you smile, because there is so much careless trash out there. He has taken the talent of approaching a topic from its blind side to new levels. There will never be anyone better at creating a piece that you know you can trust, but enjoy at the same time. I read "The Monument's Men" right before this one. I discovered that McPhee brought out an interesting fact in one paragraph that had been completely overwritten and muddied in the 800 page MM book, which was well researched but poorly written. McPhee has a way of going for the heart of the matter, but from an unexpected approach. I hope he lives forever, and has a sharp mind when he's a hundred.

Huge fan of McPhee so predisposed to like this. Especially enjoyed the title essay, "Silk Parachute," a memoir of McPhee's mother and his childhood that was at once both evocative, amusing and touching. Also got a kick out of "My Life List," a rumination on strange things that he's eaten. As a former editorial assistent and fact checker I loved "Checkpoints" which deals with fact checkers McPhee has worked with and his own attempt at fact checking himself, great stuff, I laughed out loud! Not a golfer so found "Rip van Golfer" a bit of a snooze. Remaining pieces were all enjoyed but it's been a month since I read this and they were less memorable. Recommended for all who enjoy McPhee who don't subscribe to the New Yorker where many, but not all, of these pieces were first published.

I keep thinking that I could make my writing more engaging if I read enough McPhee. Osmosis isn't working, but what fun to read his stuff.

I have been a John McPhee fan ever since some thirty or more years ago someone told me to get one of his books and read it. Turned out to be good advice. In this collection of short essays Mr. McPhee yet again proves that he can write about any subject and make it not only entertaining, but uniquely profound...leaving you wanting more.

This is a book with several stories in it. I was not able to finish it because the story of THE CHALK LINE was just too long & confusing for me. I'll probably go back & read the rest of the stories one day but I don't think I'll finish THE CHALK LINE.So far this is the only book of McPhees that I have not liked.

If you're a McPhee fan, add this one to your collection. Another example of his great reporting and you-are-there writing.

This is a book that should have stayed as magazine articles. Collectively they are cheap grab to sell a book. Taken independently the articles are palatable, but when placed side by side they are a fall into a pit of infinite details that can never be escaped. The writer has a passion for taking a collection of uninteresting articles and repeatedly describing the same details over and over until I feel even the author lost interest and just ended the article.

Properly reviewing James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson at this point is like adding a lit match to a raging bonfire (if you'll pardon the Johnsonian analogy), so I will refrain from doing so. Please allow me to share a few thoughts, however.First of all, this book is greatly entertaining and even hilarious at times. I found myself chuckling every few pages about Johnson's pointed remarks on whatever subject at hand, or his jabs at the poor Scots. To say that Johnson was an outspoken character would be the understatement of the year, and this account certainly doesn't sugarcoat his more aggressive side.On the other hand, a picture emerges of a man I found very endearing. Johnson was the poster child of typical literary genius: Very generous and amicable but also socially awkward. He grew up in ill health, suffered from serious bouts of depression throughout his life, and admitted to having difficulty controlling his appetite for food and alcohol. He was terrified of death, not because of the prospect of leaving his worldly life, but out of concern that his piety and virtue would be insufficient to avoid Satan's roasting spit in the next.What impressed me most was Johnson's cultural confidence and pride of his home country and city. While famous for (allegedly) saying that "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel," there is no mistaking the fact that Johnson appreciated all too well the extent to which London was the center of the universe in his day. One can call it "racism" toward the Chinese and others (to use a juvenile anachronism), or one can see the value in a contemporary being so fully aware of his country dominating and spreading a civilization the likes of which had never been seen before in the world. It goes without saying that Johnson would struggle in the modern-day West, what with its eagerness to reverse-propagandize itself and renounce its great history and religious heritage.While his strict adherence to Anglican theology and dislike of Enlightenment thinkers are a bit too extreme for my taste, Johnson nevertheless won himself a new admirer. I highly recommend this excellent account of this remarkable man.

If you want a portrait of eighteenth century Great Britain and the literary scene at that time you can turn to no better tome.2. The book tells a rags to riches Horatio Alger story of a great literary genius. Johnson was near sighted, heavyset and resembled a bear in his demeanor. He could be rough, coarse, sarcastic and was a master of conversational repartee and bon mots. He was also a devoted Christian believer who could be very kind and loving to family and his wide circle of friends. Johnson was the author of such monumental works as his "Dictionary of the English Language"; "The Vanity of Human Wishes"; "Rasselas" and countless essays culled from the pages of "The Rambler" newspaper and other publications of the day.3. The book is filled with stories about Johnson's distinguished friends from the world of politics, business, farming and art. He was a close friend of Dr. Oliver Goldsmith the author of "The Vicar of Wakefield" and other works, Joshua Reynolds the famous painter and David Garrick the famous Shakespearean actor.4. The book has wonderful advice on how to live a Christian life of morality and honor. Johnson was a good though far from perfect man. He did not drink but loved lavish meals and luxury. Johnson was faithful to his wife but adored the company of lovely women. He was a strong monarchist who had a famous meeting with King George III. Johnson was opposed to the American Revolution. Unlike his friend Boswell he was a strong enemy towards the slave trade.. He professed a dislike of Scotland but had many Scottish friends including James Boswell his biographer. Johnson had a strong fear of death. Dr. Johnson was plagued by ill health throughout his long and productive life of literary endeavor. Johnson wished he had become a lawyer but was one of England's greatest authors of all time,5. The biography gives us a travelogue account of many of the places visited by Dr. Johnson . Johnson and his friends the Thrales visited the France of Louis XVI and he and Boswell traveled to the Hebrides islands.. Caveats? This is not an easy book to read! There are long footnotes on many pages; Latin and Greek quotations in the original tongues and some pages are downright dull! The work contains many letters from Johnson, Boswell and others which provide fascinating reading. Some readers will have trouble with the formal language of the work filled with classical quotes from ancient authors and referring to current plays and political controversies. This reviewer found this material to be worthy of being read.6, The book is a treasure trove of pungent and succinct quotations being used with profit by writers and orators. The book has good through countless editions since first published in the 1790s. The book is a reading essential for anyone who enjoys the story of a wonderful man and his rise to the top. James Boswell is the greatest of all biographers in the English tongue. This book is an essential classic even in our twenty first century world. Essential and enjoyable! Highly recommended!

What a great read! This is one of those classics of Western Literature which gets one through dark times. Samuel Johnson was a literary raconteur and noted wit. He came from very inauspicious beginnings and sought to really frame human life in all of its follies and foibles. I was impressed that Boswell saw fit to record the minutiae of his life (worries about money, worries about drinking too much, all the places he lived in London). Boswell really brought Samuel Johnson's larger than life character and private concerns out into the open and (perhaps) immortalized his version for posterity.
