In AdministrativeBurden, Herd and Moynihan document that the administrative burdens citizens regularly encounter in their interactions with the state are not simply unintended byproducts of governance, but the result of deliberate policy choices. Because burdens affect people’s perceptions of government and often perpetuate long-standing inequalities, understanding why administrative burdens exist and how they can be reduced is essential for maintaining a healthy public sector.   Through in-depth case studies of federal programs and controversial legislation, the authors show that administrative burdens are the nuts-and-bolts of policy design. Regarding controversial issues such as voter enfranchisement or abortion rights, lawmakers often use administrative burdens to limit access to rights or services they oppose. For instance, legislators have implemented administrative burdens such as complicated registration requirements and strict voter-identification laws to suppress turnout of African American voters. Similarly, the right to an abortion is legally protected, but many states require women seeking abortions to comply with burdens such as mandatory waiting periods, ultrasounds, and scripted counseling. As Herd and Moynihan demonstrate, administrative burdens often disproportionately affect the disadvantaged who lack the resources to deal with the financial and psychological costs of navigating these obstacles.   However, policymakers have sometimes reduced administrative burdens or shifted them away from citizens and onto the government. One example is Social Security, which early administrators of the program implemented in the 1930s with the goal of minimizing burdens for beneficiaries. As a result, the take-up rate is about 100 percent because the Social Security Administration keeps track of peoples’ earnings for them, automatically calculates benefits and eligibility, and simply requires an easy online enrollment or visiting one of 1,200 field offices. Making more programs and public services operate this efficiently, the authors argue, requires adoption of a nonpartisan, evidence-based metric for determining when and how to institute administrative burdens, with a bias toward reducing them. By ensuring that the public’s interaction with government is no more onerous than it need be, policymakers and administrators can reduce inequality, boost civic engagement, and build an efficient state that works for all citizens.

I loved this little book so much. I put the Beatitudes to memory and recite them to myself regularly. When I got this book, I learned that these are not individual attitudes, but rather a collection that every Christ-follower should own in his character...one builds on the other...then we are told that we are the light of the world, and the salt of the earth. With all of the beatitudes in ownership we should "so let our light so shine that others see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." And this is the Christian's goal, isn't it...glorifying God in all we do.

I had always considered The Beatitudes as separate attributes, but Arthur Pink has put them in a completely new light. He presents a view that all of them are a progression of Christian development and all should be the experience of Christian growth in every person. His conclusion also shows Jesus Christ as the embodiment of all of these characteristics brought to perfection. Understanding this progression also helped to memorise them in their developmental order.

The book offers a different perspective on the Beatitudes. He interprets them more as stepping stones in the development of Christian character, not as separate character traits. I am not sure I am convinced but he does a good job at explaining himself.

Pink has great thoughts to teach you about the Lord' s"Sermon on the Mount". I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about these Words of our Master and Savior,Jesus Christ through Pink's excellent writings. ( a new writer to me/although writtena good while back in time.)

I had never read Pink before but I am so grateful to have had his books recommended to me. His biblical studies are extraordinary and this book is no exception. Some say he errs on the side of Calvinism but I think to not take his works seriously is unwise. What he wrote almost 100 years ago still stands as a beacon of intelligent, insightful and deeply spiritual study. Take the golden nuggets and store them in your mind as you daily walk with your Lord and Saviour.

A W Pink, as usual provides brilliant commentary of God's word. The author unfolds the Beatitudes in a way that exposes the richness of God's word to His children. Comforting believers as nothing else can in this sin cursed and fallen world.

I would recommend this book as it will expound on the Beattitudes found in the Gospel of Matthew. It is a short book that will bless the reader.

A. W. Pink hit the nail on the head by getting straight to the point; The heart of the matter is first realizing our state of being without Christ. When we do come to the place of seeing ourselves for who/what we really are, we cannot help but see how poor/bankrupt we are - so it comes from that realization that we cry out to God in a state of being poor in spirit. The process goes forward from there - and Pink lays out the progression one by one making it easy to understand and put into practice! This would make a very thoughtful small group study.

Dynasty of Evil is the third book in Drew Karpyshyn's trilogy about Darth Bane and the Old Republic. The action in the three books takes place about a thousand years before the time of A New Hope. The first book was Path of Destruction which introduced us to Darth Bane when he first became a Sith and developed the maxim of having only two Sith - a master and an apprentice. The second book was Rule of Two with Darth Bane training his apprentice Zannah and growing ever stronger in the Dark Side with the help of the barnacle-like orbalisks.Now, in Dynasty of Evil, we see Bane become even more powerful as he waits to see if his apprentice is ready to challenge him. If Zannah is not up to the challenge, Bane may need to find other alternatives. One that particularly appeals to him is to find a means of extending his own life. His scheme intertwines with a mission that he assigns to Zannah, and additional characters play important roles. Serra is the daughter of Caleb, a healer who once saved Bane's life. She is now a princess of the mining world of Doan. Lucia is Serra's bodyguard and, interestingly enough, used to be a member of the Gloom Walkers regiment at the same time as Bane. Then we have The Huntress, who is a Force-sensitive assassin, and Set Harth, an artifact hunter who used to be a Jedi. They all are interesting characters who are heavily involved with the tale.Mr. Karpyshyn does an excellent job in moving the story along and has some great action sequences as well as an ending that is open to interpretation by the reader. I look forward to seeing what he writes about next in the Star Wars universe.

This was one of the first 3 or 4 SW novels I ever read and I loved it so miuch that I ended up buying the audiobook as well as this hard copy and just obsessing over every detail. I am still questioning my own morals for basically falling in love with a man who committed one or two quite objectionable (ok terrible) crimes. Thats how well-developed this character, Bane is.I swear this is the greatest thing I've read in eons. Much of what I read in the future will be measured up against The Bane Trilogy.Yikes!! Dynasty of Evil is so great its just scary!

Hate to admit it but I like the dark side. They seem real world, believable, while the Jedi are sanctimonious priests who preach a level of virtue that is humanly unattainable. Sort of like catholic priests and we know how that turns out. Bane is real world, dude, he takes what he can and has the strength to admit the world is survival of the fittest.

Now I very, rarely give out 5**** ratings... but Dynasty of Evil is just a solid all around novel of bad guys vs bad guys in a unwinable situation.DoE is Possibly the best Star Wars novel out there. Even though it isn't considered relevant to the Star Wars universe, I still find this story a very fitting piece of the universe. Darth Bane and his apprentice are just two characters stuck among a vibrant others who are equally driven by self interest. Nobody's hands are clean and everyone 's day goes from bad to worst. A classic tragedy of characters going from bad to worst...only one will come out alive.

The final book in the trilogy, now things can resolve - or can they?Bane has aged quickly from the various stresses of his life and really wants Zannah to take him on before Bane's strength fades. After all, being cut down in your prime means you've trained a really fine apprentice. An apprentice that waits until your feeble. sigh. Not worthy. Meanwhile, he's taught Zannah the value of patience. Maybe too well.Zannah, meanwhile, is making sure she's learned as much as she's going to from her master. She already thinks she might defeat him. Also, she wants to have a worthy apprentice lined up before the big fight. It's a rule of two, not a rule of one. Good apprentices are hard to find. There are flawed and mediocre ones. She's got to chose one sometime.So, Bane is busily trying to make sure he'll be strong enough long enough to pass the title to someone worthy. All the while hiding his plan from Zannah. Zannah is getting her own plan lined up while trying to keep Bane from knowing what is coming when.It's no spoiler to say that they do resolve the conflict.

As the third book in a great series, this book had a lot to live up to, and I think it did in many ways. You could certainly complain about the predictable nature of parts, but I won't becuase I found the book entertaining in spite of this. It's one of the few Star Wars books I've read of late that have actually had characters that develop a little from the start to the finish. (A lot of the recent books have been half-baked poorly disguised marketing gimmicks with lame characters and even lousier plots.) Not so with this one, for "bad guys" Zannah and Bane are likable people, very passionate about what they believe.The ending was fitting if a little disappointing. Parts of the book are way too convenient. (Bane's rescue, etc) Still, to have such flaws and still be entertaining is commendable in a book. It's a worthwhile read. I may reread the others so it all fits nicely.

This is a great conclusion to the Darth Bane book series written by Drew Karpyshyn. If you enjoyed Path of Destruction and Rule of Two, then this is the book for you. It is madness for anyone to attempt to plumb the life of this prolific playwright who oddly left no written record of his personal life or literary influences. For that effort alone, I give author Greenblatt three stars.For the amount of scholarly work and devotion to his daunting subject, I give another star; Greenblatt's love for his subject never wavers despite the obvious frustrations of trying to understand someone so elusive. He maintains that breathless "voice" right to the last page (there are 390 of them). At times his writing can tilt toward dissertation-like brain freeze, but overall this is a thorough and lively analysis of Shakespeare's literary journey.My final star is awarded because Greenblatt kept me engaged in a story in which familiarity was breeding contempt. By page 300 I just didn't like Shakespeare anymore who seemed to use his personal relationships only as a means to an end - to fire his imagination and plot devices. He ruthlessly leveraged personal experiences (like the death of his 11-year old son Hamnet), to produce an immortal body of literature.Most people today love Shakespeare's work but could really care less about the man who wrote them, which makes this book a hard sell. If Shakespeare had lived to see that disconnect, he probably would have appreciated the irony and written a comedy or tragedy about it. He valued words above all else and is remembered for them only and, despite Greenblatt's noble effort, always will.

I'm a huge Shakespeare fan and looked forward to this book perhaps shedding some light on some of the murkier aspects of his life. Unfortunately, the "information" provided runs something like: "Elizabethans often wore gloves and, in fact, Shakespeare mentions a glove in Romeo and Juliet: 'O, that I were a glove upon that hand, That I might touch that cheek!'. Given that Will's father also worked with gloves, we can determine that it's very likely that Shakespeare possibly wore gloves at some point in his life."Ugh. After more than a few of Greenblatt's "insightful facts" I had to stop reading. Tedious and frustrating.

I studied Shakespeare as an undergraduate English literature major, taking the two best courses I ever took in college. I think we read close to half of Shakespeare's plays. Over the years I've seen many of his plays performed, always enjoying them. I've moved far away from English literature as a profession, having gone to graduate school in cognitive psychology and ended up now in a school of computer science. But literature is still an interest. Having read Greenblatt's book while on vacation in Hawaii, I've been flooded again with the emotions I've always felt from reading or seeing Shakespeare. While the book has a considerable amount of speculation, I enjoyed that. The documentary record of Shakespeare's life is famously sketchy, so I find intelligent speculation to be warranted. I'm sure his ideas will be reviewed and discussed for years. But he has made, to me at least, Shakespeare an interesting and believable person of his times. I learned a lot about the interesting interconnections in his life, and the possible sources of ideas seen in the plays. I've read many of the less enthusiastic reviews here, but they do not dampen my own enthusiasm for this volume. It is a superb read.

Dr Greenblatt has achieved that very rare success for an author, and particularly for a successful academic, of producing a book that it not only highly informative on an interesting subject, but is also a pure pleasure to read. He is honest in not claiming an excess of knowledge of Shakespeare personally, since there is so very little, but instead presents excellent research into his times, his profession and other significant individuals about whom more is recorded. For one point, I had not realized exactly how much accuracy was contained in Sir Tom Stoppard's Shakespeare in Love, a fictional production if there ever was one. Similarly, the information and commentary on early Reformation England is unusually worthwhile in explaining just how the unique phenomenon of The Bard's work came about. It is very rare that a book including this much information and commentary is so enjoyable to read. I can't recommend it too highly.

These volumes can be expensive... But you get what you pay for, I assure you. The set goes over everything you would need to know. However, you won't fully understand what this book is talking about until you start covering your work space floor with wood shavings. My advice is read the section you want are about to tackle. As you read just know that whatever you don't understand is something you probably won't understand until you get your hands dirty. After you tackle that part of the process, go back and re-read the section. You will have all sorts of little light bulbs going off. This is used more as a reference for bowyering, not a read it once and you are good to go. You will learn something almost every time you read over this.So read it, try it, read it again.These volumes also have extensive sections on different styles of bows and arrows through different era's and cultures. Some of these bows will blow your mind, but also seeing all these different styles helps to build your confidence in making your own bow. There are so many types and styles you feel less likely to screw up, because if your bow doesn't come out the way you wanted it to, it most likely came out in a way that one culture or another used for centuries.If you are serious about wanting to be a bowyer at any level, take the plunge and get the set. You won't regret it.

I bought volumes 1 and 2 several years ago, at a going out of business sale at a certain national book chain whose name rhymes with "hoarders." I hadn't actually been involved in archery for several decades, but these looked like interesting reading, and I think I paid less that two dollars for each. I only got around to reading them a few months ago, and since then I've not only bought volumes 3 and 4 to complete my set, I've been busy searching my basement for my old archery supplies, doing a tool inventory to see what I have in my home shop that I could use for bowmaking, and inspecting boards at the local big box home supply store, looking for hardwood boards with thick growth rings and minimal runout. I've even cut down a sapling behind my garage and whittled it into a simple neolithic bow.All the volumes in the series offer a wealth of information for anyone interested in making bows from wood; Volume 3 is of particular interest to the paleolithic archer, with its chapters on flintknapping and making a bow in the true paleolithic fashion, starting with a stone hand axe and a sapling. There's also quite a bit on Native American bows and arrows, ranging from the neolithic styles through the copper and steel tipped bows of the later 18th and 19th Centuries. There's information on Asians bows, from Japan and Korea, and a chapter on African bows as well. This is great reading for all archers, even you heathens who favor compound bows. ;-) Spend some times reading these books and you may find yourself hankering for a wood self-bow like our ancestors once depended on,.

Unlike the first two, which were somewhat convoluted but heavier on crafting information, this volume mostly covers historical trivia and decorating details about historical bows and arrows. It does not really improve the "how-to-make-it" knowledge base of people who are looking to craft their own. I only wanted to make a simple, inexpensive bow, and the history held no great interest for me; I found very little in this volume to add to the information already found in the first two volumes.

This final volume ( # 3 ) of this series has very useful instructional information concerning bow making tools, take down ( two piece ) bows, stone age bows, stone points ( knapping ), and making arrows. Bow designs from many cultures around the world are examined and explained in detail. The tools mentioned range from simple hand tools, such as the wood rasp, to power tools, like the band saw. Power tools are not needed to make these bows, but can save time. Properly made arrows are a very important part of archery gear, and this voulme shows how they are made correctly and safely using a variety of woods and fletchings. Other chapters explain bow designs such as the asymetrical yumi bow from Japan, the materials for composite bows of Korea, and the hole nocks from some African bows.

This book has it all… history, pictures, know-how, and knowledge shared, including step by step instructions of everything that you will need to know to make your own bows and arrows. It can be read as a history or as a 'Maker's' bible of archery. If you're going to embark on this journey then you need to start here.

well this is a must have book too if you read about wood bows, the whole series is kind of like required reading so yes id recommend this book to anyone delving into wood bow work....

I was again pleasantly surprised by another book penned by Suzanne Hart. This wasnt the first time I was surprised with such a tremendous storyline, there was so much to the characters and the plot that I couldnt put it down. The chemistry between Naomi & Alex was sizzling but their connection was immediate and undeniable which the author did a wonderful job of conveying through her words. Alex's story was book 2 after his older brothers Silas' love connection was detailed in book 1. Wanting Secret Baby can be read as a standalone as I had not read Silas story but the author provide enough background to bring the read up to speed in the Denton family happenings. Definitely Recommend One-Clicking, I was so engaged that I was left wanting more from Wanting Secret Baby! I can only hope Suzanne Hart has another Denton love story for Miles coming up next.I am voluntarily leaving my voluntary opinion with this review.

Very emotional book, Alex and Naomi had a great chemistry from the beginning but a lot of mistakes and misunderstanding got in the way. Alex was a tool sometimes but in the end everything came together.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were interesting and the story line was good. I couldn’t put this book down until I finished it.

This was a great read. It was well written and I loved the Denton family. I can't wait to read more about them.

I spent the majority of the second half of this book angrily wondering why I was continuing to read it. Naomi had this reconcieved idea of who Alex was and based on that and not on anything else she chose to exclude him not only from her life but from his child’s life. Because she had a few bad relationships she decided that he was like all the other men she had met and didn’t deserve a chance with her and when she realized she was pregnant she used it as an excuse to exclude him. What makes me so angry is that they don’t even acknowledge it in the book. They make it seem like she was justified in not getting to know him, when he had so many more dimensions to him, and that he believed that he deserved to kept out of his daughter’s life. She didn’t make the decisions she did about him in their kids life because she was being a good mother the way Alex tries to say in later chapters, she does it for selfish reasons and I cannot appreciate a book that doesn’t acknowledge that or give the character the chance to be vindicated. More than half of this book was just ‘let’s crap on Alex, even though he hasn’t actually done anything to deserve it’ and then the end is just him accepting that and somehow them working it out.

I love the Denton family stories! This is the second book and covers Naomi and Alex’s story. The first was Silas and Iris’s story. I love how these are standalone HEA stories but since Naomi and Iris are best friends and business partners and Silas and Alex are brothers everything blends and you get more from where the previous book left off. Alex is a great character with many secrets and Naomi is strong willed and very independent, but makes many assumptions and reactions that are based on rumor and others opinions. This book has the heat both physical and emotional. I am looking forward to learning the story of Miles and of Sadie (the other Denton siblings). Hopefully they will have their own books!I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Naomi only met Alex briefly and for some reason he's now showing up at random times and I cant stop this attraction. But he's a Denton and daddy wouldn't like him being a possible suitor for me. All the dates daddy lined up for me were horrible the men just wasn't what I was looking for. I decided to put a relationship aside to concentrate on Iris's and Silas wedding. I had to make it perfect. One night is all it took and Alex and I couldn't keep our hands off each other and weeks later I was running with fear. So I left and went to Virginia to hide until I could return to Chicago and boy my feelings have still yet to dissolve for Alex. I thought he was player until one day, I finally figured out the truth and a slap in the face it was. But now after time spent away and returning my life is anything like it when I left and now returning the walls are crumbling.
