He has served as CEO of a Savings and Loan, as an adjunct legal assistant teacher at a community college, a tutor for GED students, a Fellow of the American College of Probate Counsel, and an arbitrator. He has authored many articles for publications including:You and Your Estate (1988), and Your Worldly Possessions, A Complete Guide to Preserving, Passing on, and Inheriting Property (1992). Author and highly respected attorney Ted Kubicek provides in his book,ADVERSARIAL JUSTICE:AMERICA'S COURT SYSTEM ON TRIAL, a long overdue critique of the American court system, which he perceives as seriously and inevitably flawed by the fundamental motive inherent in its very structure -- specifically, the incentive to win rather than to produce justice. In this misguided pursuit of 'victory', truths are suppressed or distorted, both juries and judges are left to render decisions on skewed evidence and arguments, and the costs are tragically born both by those individuals who are euphemistically "brought to justice" as well as by the larger society. Kubicek cites other legal scholars as well as relevant cases in the development of his argument. And he provides an alternative to the adversarial approach to litigation in the inquisitorial (one versed in philosophical discourse is tempted to use the term 'Socratic') approach represented in most of the court procedures of continental Europe. The information in this book is great. I am a novice gardener and I found the perfect book of knowledge for my new interest. That being said, the digital formatting and editing of this book is horrendous. There are entire pages that repeat themselves two and three times, and pages I can barely read because the sentences edge the pages. I have tried every setting possible, in both Kindle and Samsung settings and it's just the way the book was set.

Outstanding book. Truly helpful.One tip I found that I thought I would share here is the use of black vinyl pool bags for your greenhouse. These bags are used by swimming pool owners to weigh down their pool covers in the winter, they come in 8' and 10' lengths and they work wonderfully to absorb the heat during the day and give it off at night in a greenhouse. They usually come in two colors, blue and black. And, since they are smaller than a 55 gallon drum, they lay flat, and can be adjusted to fit around plants, they are truly great additions. Another great feature is that they heat up quickly during a winter day, whereas big drums do not. Give them a try in your greenhouse, I think you will really like them.

This is a great book for basic information on greenhouse gardening but I would have preferred more information on general bedding lay-outs and less information on using barrels of water to generate more solar heat. Since I live in the desert that information seemed fairly redundant for my needs and was quite extensively covered in the book. The materials used in the book are very affordable as are suggestions for maximizing your growing space and creating the most productive garden possible. It also covered some areas in standard outdoor gardening, but again, I was interested in the greenhouse specifics and think that a future book focusing on only greenhouse methods with more versatility for desert coverage as well would be even more beneficial. Good book in general and well written!

I am a fairly new gardener. Me and my husband are getting more into the homesteading...growing our own fruits and veggies and eventually raising our own goats, chickens and rabbits.I wasn't sure I would want to do greenhouse gardening, but after looking through all the interesting and helpful tips and instructions I think I will love greenhouse gardening much more than traditional gardening for the simple fact that I have much more flexibility in my growing season and can grow all year long.

Shane Smith gives important basic information about passive solar design and production in a winter growing space. When I first started out, four years ago, it was the one book I was flipping through daily. I grow vegetables in winter in Minnesota, so I figured a guy in Wyoming would understand my challenges of weather conditions and day length. This made his planting schedules a useful tool. I did read this one cover to cover and then referenced certain sections again and again in those first two years. If you are thinking about building a greenhouse or just got one, add this book to your library and you won't be sorry. He'll show you how to save some money by applying passive solar design elements to your structure that will save you money in heating costs and make your growing space more productive and fun. As to the comments one reviewer posted about Smith's aversion to hydroponics, I happen to concur with the author. I like working with soil. I don't care if hydroponics has gone "organic." It still creates waste water that must be dealt with and lacks the beneficial fungus interactions that soil provides for plant roots on a cellular level. At least Smith's upfront about his preference and there are plenty of resource materials out there for folks who want to work with hydroponic systems. This book is a plain and simple introduction to greenhouse growing that makes it accessible to beginners. I still flip through it from time to time and always find some tidbit I can use to improve things in my own growing space.

Excellent! Received the greenhouse for Christmas - a total surprise. I'm a beginner outdoor gardner. This easy-to-read, spiced with humorous comments, and VERY informative book has been my guide to managing my greenhouse. The book is packed with charts/tables that summarize information about sowing, planting, transplanting plants, etc. It covers vegetables and flowering plants.There are example record-keeping pages. It has straight-forward information about the greenhouse environment. I also use it as a reference for growing vegetables in our outdoor vegetable beds. There is so much information that even an experienced greenhouse gardener will pick up useful facts and tips.

This is a great reference book on building greenhouses and growing plants in the greenhouse. I am a beginner at greenhouse gardening and am finding this book invaluable, and chock full of great information, as well as references as to where to find resources for seeds, and greenhouse supplies. Hats off to the author, wonderful job!!! A must for every garden library!!!

For me, this is another one of those books they recommend when taking a professional course where a teacher/professor can expound on the information given. It's a book that will take me three or four times of reading through before I fully catch what the author is laying down. It's almost as if these authors have spent an entire lifetime doing this and then they surround themselves with people just themselves....and it their vernacular becomes accustomed to speaking this way. I was reading an article in this month's Mountain Astrologer about this very thing. Sue Tompkins is no doubt at the top of her field - but it's not written for the normal Joe. I'm glad I have it. I'll continue using it as a reference and reading pages here and there as I go, but for a normal Joe kind of speaker - it is a challenge.

Excellent book! In fact I am treating this book as a Course as I am not savvy on this particular subject, but very much interested! I wanted a book by a reputable person and I think that Sue Tompkins would be most knowledgeable! I am studying this book in conjunction with another book written by Z'ev ben Shimon Halevi called Kabbalah and Astrology.

I've been an astrologer for 40 years. Aspects tell the plot line: how the archetypes (the planets, the daimons) will behave when one encounters another. This book is the best I've ever read at combining vivid real world descriptions with an understanding of the underlying dynamic and how it can manifest in such a variety of ways. Not vague. Not general. Some classic, remarkably dead-on descriptions. See, e.g., her description of Sun/Neptune and realize this is the strongest Sun aspect in Barack Obama's birth chart. Chicken skin.A genuine classic.And a thrill that it's now available on Kindle.

I've read many books on astrology and this ranks as one of my favorites. Ms. Tompkins' explanations of each planet's energy and how it affects us in our personal chart and through transit is one of the best I've seen. I am not a beginner; I've taken many courses on astrology and am always looking to learn more. This book (which I intend to keep as a handy reference guide) is tops for both beginning and advanced students.

The most important part of the horoscope is probably the aspects between the planets and/or the ascendant. The more the aspects and the greater their strength, the more the horoscope seems to be saying. But to understand just what it is saying, many of us rely on other astrologers who are better than we are, and that is why owning a few good books about the planetary aspects is so important for most students of astrology. A little technique I use when checking out a book in the store is to skip to the section about an aspect I have in my own natal chart and am more familiar with-- Venus-Saturn, for example --and test the author in that manner. You can't necessarily expect he or she to know every little thing you know about how this aspect seems to play out in your life, but their interpretation should at least tell you something you don't already know. But even if it doesn't, as long as it sounds accurate, I'll give the book a second chance and look at its treatment of some of the other aspects. You usually can tell when what the author says seems to have the kind of authenticity and convincing detail that is grounded in personal experience, rather than being derived from guess-work or deductive reasoning about what a combination of Venus-Saturn or Jupiter-Pluto *should* mean. Horoscope interpretation is hard enough as it is, because I think that everyone who studies astrology quickly learns that the textbooks are just a guide, and even though they are usually referred to as "cookbooks", relying on the separate ingredients to reach an overall understanding of a real person's complex personality is not even as useful as a recipe. Not that I'm much of a cook myself, and not that I don't admire astrologers who can write these books, because it must be quite difficult. Given these facts, Sue Tompkins's book passes all the tests and I've returned many times for guidance to the worn, underlined passages in my 1990 copy of her book. And the fact that it keeps getting reissued by different publishers and still can be found in the ridiculously small astrology section of Borders or Barnes & Noble--while so many others are excluded or have gone out of print-- speaks for itself. I whole-heartedly recommend it.

The standard texts on aspects for years was "Dynamics of Aspect Analysis" by Bil Tierney, and before that Dane Rudhyar's "Astrological Aspects". Sue Tompkins' more recent book is a welcome addition to this canon. You'll not only laugh, but will learn a thing or two.Long review: If Our Bodies Could Talk is a book that everyone will enjoy - from those that may have random bodily questions that they were too embarrassed to ask Google, to those that have backgrounds in Science and Medicine (and anywhere in between.) Worried about that contact being stuck in your brain? This will help. It's broken down into categories that allow the reader to skip around if you so wish, (although I recommend reading it from start to finish.) This is one of the few books that I've read in a little less than four days and laughed throughout. Jim manages to cover vast topics, from juice diets and fad eating, to everything in between without bias. It's a breath of fresh air to read a book that covers health, yet isn't trying to sell you on some weird supplements or products. If you enjoy reading Jim's Atlantic columns, or watching the video series If Our Bodies Could Talk, this will be right up your alley.

I think the book may be poorly named; it's not a manual, where you can flip to the section on your heart and look up its functions and potential problems: that's just its organizing metaphor. It has larger goals: asking how and why people acquire information about their bodies, looking at what the questions we ask reveal about these things, and at the history of the spread of knowledge (or of falsehoods) about our bodies. Which is not to say that it's dry or theoretical--it's peppered with anecdotes and interesting facts that keep you moving through the book.And to be honest--I think this book is actually a much better education than a simple manual would be, because it places questions and ideas about the body in a larger context. In an age of misinformation by commercial interests and conspiracy theories (some of the victims of whom you can see complaining in the reviews here), it has the potential to be an inoculation (ha) against the ignorance that is being actively spread throughout our society.If you're a person who has made certain beliefs about medicine and biology central to your understanding of yourself and the world, you're not going to be convinced or like this book when it points out the honest facts that contradict your beliefs.But if you're the kind of person who is interested in knowledge and truth more than in being comfortable; who hasn't yet fallen for conspiracy thinking about vaccinations or "the medical establishment" or whatever; who is willing to give our society a hard look; who is ready to examine your own thinking about health; then you will enjoy this book and find it as fascinating as I did.

This is a really enjoyable book, a true pleasure to read! It is full of meaningful, relevant health information - as well as some just plain interesting factoids. The witty humor and quips keep it moving while the legitimate informative content makes you want to read more. The format also allows one to pick up and enjoy any one topic or topics for a quick snippet. ...Highly recommend!

I gave this book 5 stars, but it deserves 10. I have read quite a few 'medical' books and articles in my day and never have I come across one that answers so many interesting questions about the human body in such a way that every person can follow along and enjoy + the author's sense of humor had me laughing out loud. His topics range from Itch Specialists, MIA contact lenses, Sleep deprivation, and ways to lead a healthier life. It's got everything!

Super book. Interesting brief answers to questions about he human body, with a large dash of humour. Example:"can you lose a contact lens in your eye, and if so, will it end up in your brain". Manages this while being scientifically accurate, brief, and humble about both the author's clear brilliance and also about medical science.

Also serious, well-sourced, and sarcastic (judiciously applied sarcasm, IMHO).An avid reader, I almost never write reviews, but I am so grateful that a book like this has been written that I am taking a few moments to share my admiration.This book has running humor throughout, which makes delightful work of reading about important issues and details concerning health information that has largely been co-opted by commercial, political, and cultural agendas. (Warning: I found it hard to read this book alone; there was so much information and entertainment I wanted to share with family and friends.)I would give my right arm to be able to write like this. (And then what would happen to that arm? Would it appear in a traveling show with a banner: "Famous Author Strikes Miraculous Book-for-Body-Part-Deal"? Would my forfeited arm be available for purchase by, say, a tattoo training program? You'll have to read the book to find out :-)

I love Hamblin's work for the Atlantic so when I saw he wrote a book I had to read it. He is very funny and a bit weird (in the best way), while also tackling very important and urgent issues facing our society and our planet. Would recommend this book to anyone!

Highly recommended. Dr. Hamblin has produced an easy to understand excellent primer on the body. Much like his podcasts, he gets to the point quickly and clearly. Read this book and you will be able to avoid much of the quackery that passes for medical advice from the "they say" types. Good read.

I bought the book for my recent trip to Oman. I usually like Lonely Planet travel books but I found the writer's information a bit off. For example the section on Wadi Shab completely underestimated the challenge of the hike and I would certainly recommend a re-evaluation of this section. Also, since the country's tourist infrastructure is significantly underdeveloped it would have been nice to have recommendations for local travel companies/guides that are reliable. Also - restaurant recommendations were very limited. There are not a lot of options even in Muscat but I think the writer could have done a more thorough investigation of the available options.

Gives you just a very rough idea what to expect. Missing essential information, incorrect (probably not up to date) information. I expected better quality from this series.

I write almost no reviews, but I'm making an exception. My first reaction was that this is the worst LP I've ever seen. Then that it is the worst guidebook ever written. Now I know it is the worst book ever written on any subject in any language. Actually, it's probably the worst product of any kind. Since I got the kindle version, I can't even use it as toilet paper. There is no information of any kind on any page. It reads like a travel article in one of those give-away fashion magazines. Everything in it is completely generic -- advice like "different countries have different visa rules, so you should research them before you travel." For some reason it has chapters on several countries on the peninsula, despite the fact the borders are almost all effectively closed. You'd think that at least the Oman and UAE sections would have something in them, being the main part of the title, but there is absolutely no content in them that is not completely generic -- basically just computer generated web content copied off of a clickbait site. LP's been going downhill fast for years, but it's outrageous that they would produce such a piece of garbage. Yes, I'm angry, and I didn't even have to pay for it (got it on kindle unlimited).Got the rough guide, which was fine as a guidebook, though navigating on the kindle is a pain.

Good book. The pages turn as they are supposed to and it closes nicely. Sits well on a shelf, or on a coffee table.
