Almost always with a smile.Wilkie has developed a very interesting Jesus here, one that may rub literalists the wrong way. Jesus is a counselor with a sense of humor and not a little irony. At the same time, he does assert his prerogatives as God, and he’s not above trash talking with Satan.But don't think this comic is only for Christians. Indeed, I first learned of this strip from an atheist friend, who is a big fan. Wilkie touches on issues everyone deals with, and you'll identify with parts of each character. It has the same kind of life insights as another remarkable comic, "Calvin and Hobbes." You don't have to be a boy or a tiger to appreciate that, do you?Artistically, this is the simplest comic you’ll ever see – with one exception, each character has only one pose, seen at two distances. A smile will occasionally become a closed mouth. Jesus almost always appears in the second and fourth panel, and one character in the other two. That’s it. It’s remarkably effective.Some features of the Coffee world will shape the reader’s reaction to this material. Wilkie comes from an evangelical background that clearly stamps the kinds of Christianity he knows, the world of mega-churches, charismatic pastors, and a certain kind of Bible study. African Methodist Episcopalians and Catholics will recognize their neighbors here, but not their own church. When Wilkie talks politics, it’s clear that his characters are G. W. Bush evangelicals – though Wilkie is more inclusive. Indeed, Wilkie would rather get partisan politics out of the church entirely.Even so, whatever your church, whatever your politics, you’ll find something here.

My view of Jesus (in the context of "Coffee with Jesus") is that he represents a moral and ethical ideal, a role model that we can aspire to emulate, a friend. In these strips, Jesus punctures pomposity, humbles hypocrisy, and provides brilliant insights not only about ourselves, but also about the nature of good vs. evil... or more appropriately, as the eternal battle between doing what's easy and doing what's right.Some of these strips fall flat with me as a non-Christian, particularly those that urge that someone should simply trust Jesus (i.e., God) to handle the hard stuff. That's not how *my* God works; as the saying goes, God helps those who helps themselves.The bulk of the strips offer a less denominational message. When Jesus chats with a vain woman, a hard-working gardener, a couple with relationship issues, a weary preacher, and even with Satan (who mocks him as "Boy King") these strips make you think. You could imagine Mohammed, the Buddha and Moses nodding along with this Jesus' pithy observations and terse one-liners.This is not a book to read in one sitting; the subtlety and thoughtfulness would be wasted. Instead, put "Coffee with Jesus" on your nightstand, and read a page before you go to sleep. Even if you aren't a Christian, you'll find that this is a Jesus you can relate to.By the way, Volume II is out; I have ordered it and will review soon.

This man is funny, witty, and has a sense of humor quite like mine so I knew, if this book made him laugh, I would love it. Sure enough, the analogies, questions, conversations with Jesus and the answers he gives (which are written in an almost Sunday Comics format) are spot on with today's society and how Jesus would handle all the ME ME ME issues presented to him. He told me that he not only personally loved it, but that he constantly referred to it over the few weeks he had it. And with that glowing endorsement, I bought him his very own copy. You don't have to be one ounce religious to enjoy this book, instead you'll find yourself enamored by it...

Peter Bronski's collection of survival stories is riveting. Beginning with an introduction discussing the unique history and characteristics that are the Adirondacks, Bronski sets the tone for some amazing and harrowing true stories.The infamous 1995 `blowdown' (derecho) is witnessed by several campers, where tornado-like microburst combined with thousands of lightning strikes terrifies the region. The storm leaves campers stranded in a mix of tangled trees piled like matchsticks. Four young men on a winter hiking trip suddenly experience a fast regional thaw and watch as several feet of snow turn to slush, suddenly flooding their lean-to and leaving them to hike over treacherous lakes and rivers that can't hold their weight. An experienced pilot and his wife crash their small plane into a mountainside, barely surviving, only to find themselves miles from nowhere.These are just some of the stories that the author brings to life, some old and some recent. The most striking aspect this collection is the emphasis on search and rescue (SAR) in conjunction with the survivors ordeals. There are numerous missing persons mentioned over the years, some found and some lost forever. Instead of dwelling on morbid or gory descriptions, Bronksi focuses on the survivors and those that risk their lives to save others. Sometimes remnants of a lost hiker are found years later. Sometimes the family never gives up the search. This book is an instant classic and a must read for any outdoor enthusiast, especially if they travel in the Adirondacks.

To those of us who have come to appreciate the God-created majesty and beauty of the Adirondak Mountains, Peter Bronski's book reminds us that "the wildness" of weather and terrain can quickly become desperate enemies to the overly adventurous among us. Amazing stories that give us a deep appreciation for those mountain natives that are able to mount death defying rescues quickly.

What a wonderful read. I just recently discovered hiking/camping in the Adirondacks and its become my new love.... So during the week when I'm in the city working and there is no chance of being in the wilderness (And I'm itching for the weekends)... This book helps to quell that itch and gives me something to read so I feel like I'm there. This book brings it all to life, the perfect mix of storytelling, facts/information (perfect for understanding where everything is taking place) and suspense. It also makes one respect the power of nature and the Adirondacks, and if you're a hiker, definitely helps you get an understanding of what can do wrong. The stories are numerous and just the right length. Just when you have reached the end of one, the next is beginning. Lastly the author does an excellent job of combining quotes in the beginning of each chapter from sources that I'm sure to follow up on and will make my reading list in the future. Good job and thanks for the awesome read!!!

I just read the Preface and I am hooked. Peter Bronski's writing style is both passionate and eloquent. The pages come alive with his love and respect for the outdoors and especially the Adirondacks. I am very happy and jumping back in right now :)

Having lived near the Adirondacks and having ridden motorcycles all over them, I was familiar with many of the mountains and places. I lived through the micro burst and the ice storm of 98. All the stories were excellent and in some cases very intriguing. Highly recommend if you are interested in survival situations.

I cut my outdoor teeth in the high peaks region back in the late 70s & early 80s. The beauty and unpredictability of the weather in this region are unmatched. My spine tingled as I read the harrowing stories of people caught in the clutches of bad situations, and fighting to make the best of it. I've been a Search & Rescue team member in Kern County Ca and Monterey county Ca, and been in some truely frightening situations, but none as scary as a severe thunder & lightning storm on the top of Giant Mountain. This book brought back the rememberance of my primal fear...feeling my hair stand up from the static building before the lightning strikes, the screaming of both me and my trailmates, as the thunder boomed, reminding us of how frail life really is. What a great book!

This book is useful in case study about hiking / backpacking deaths and dangers. Recommended. These are REAL dangers... not the make-believe "paranormal" fantasies pushed by paranoid types.

Tragedies and near tragedies told in a very conversational style. You felt like you knew the people that work the rescue teams in the White Mountains after reading this book.

This book is extremely comprehensive and detailed. Alise has included 52 "regular" workouts and 13 themed workouts for a total of 65 different workout options. Think that will keep your class busy for a while? The workouts are great, but they would be tough to implement if you didn't understand the exercises in the workouts. Luckily Alise gives extremely detailed descriptions and photographs of every exercise described in the book in The Glossary section at the end of the book. I write for a fitness website and am up to date on the fitness the industry, and even with that background, I picked up a lot of brand new useful information from this book.If you plan on coaching your own bootcamps or group classes, this book is a no-brainer. If you workout at home on your own and program your own workouts, this book will keep your workout schedule full for at least a year.

This book is really filled to the brim with everything you need to make the most of your workout. Was interested in this book from a personal perspective. I wanted inspiration and new ideas for workouts. This book really delivered and the author made it easy to understand and follow. You can follow the programs straight off if you want to or you can pick and mix as you like! With this book I will never be without inspiration for my workouts for a loooong time. Don't miss out!

This is a great resource book for instructors and trainers. Lots of fresh ideas and workoutcombinations to choose from. I also like that Alise includes great warm ups and a big variety of them. It can really be a time saver for trainers and instructors. I am looking forward to using them in my classes and trainings for my clients. I recommend it for all fitness professionals, but it can also be a good book for people who want to design their own exercise routines. The Author includes wonderful descriptions and pictures for the exercises. 5 stars for sure!

Although not a trainer myself, it is clear that Ms. Oliver's book is simply loaded to the max with workout strategies trainers can easily incorporate for any client. Well written and easy to follow. Watch out America -- training is underway!

I am a group fitness instructor and taught a class this morning using one of the book's workout formats. It was a hit!! What used to take me an hour or more to plan a class only took me a fraction of the time using "The Trainer's Big Book of Bootcamps." The workouts are easy to follow and Ms. Oliver does a great job explaining the exercises. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to mix up their workout routine and to instructors who want to save time on class planning. Two thumbs up!

I am a busy trainer and bootcamp instructor and sometimes I don't have time to plan my own workouts..I have used this book more for my personal workouts recently and whew, they are challenging workouts! They never disappoint! The workouts are easy to follow and this book has a great exercise library!

This book is exactly what I have been looking for. I am a dedicated train at home type. This book provides all the resources I need to elevate my home gym. If you want the boot camp results without the boot camp, this is all you need.
